Holistic assessment of sustainable urban development

    Get PDF
Introducing the SUE-MoT (metrics, models and toolkits for whole-life sustainable urban development) series, this paper highlights some of the barriers that need to be addressed if the vision for holistic assessment is to be realised. The complexities of sustainability assessment raised in this paper will be further discussed in detail in the SUE-MoT series of papers that will be published in forthcoming issues of this journal. This paper highlights the priorities to address when assessment tools are presented to decision makers of urban development projects. This discussion is limited to the issues, values and solutions in the UK context

A Case Report of Decompensated Cirrhosis of Liver with Sideroblastic Anemia.

A 35-year-old man was admitted to hospital with severe anemia. Two years back, he had presented with bleeding esophageal varices and subsequently diagnosed as a case of chronic liver disease with portal hypertension. He was then treated with esophageal band ligation. He tested positive for hepatitis B surface antigen with HBV DNA levels of 4 × 106 copies/ml by PCR. His repeat endoscopy showed grade 1 esophageal varices with no evidence of recent or active bleeding. On further investigation, his bone marrow showed dimorphic erythroid hyperplasia with ring sideroblasts and diagnosis of sideroblastic anemia was made. Although rarely, it was suggested that as cirrhosis is a chronic process, it may cause nutritional deficiency, which in turn may lead to the development of anemia. Handwritten character recognition using convolutional neural network

    Get PDF
Handwritten character recognition (HCR) is the detection of characters from images, documents and other sources and changes them in machine-readable shape for further processing. The accurate recognition of intricate-shaped compound handwritten characters is still a great challenge. Recent advances in convolutional neural network (CNN) have made great progress in HCR by learning discriminatory characteristics from large amounts of raw data. In this paper, CNN is implemented to recognize the characters from a test dataset. The main focus of this work is to investigate CNN capability to recognize the characters from the image dataset and the accuracy of recognition w implementation is experimented with the dataset NIST to obtain the accuracy of handwritten characters. Test result provides that an accuracy of 92.91% accuracy is obtained on 200 images with a training set of 1000 images from NIST

Structural insights into the assembly and regulation of distinct viral capsid complexes

The assembly and regulation of viral capsid proteins into highly ordered macromolecular complexes is essential for viral replication. Here, we utilize crystal structures of the capsid protein from the smallest and simplest known viruses capable of autonomously replicating in animal cells, circoviruses, to establish structural and mechanistic insights into capsid morphogenesis and regulation. The beak and feather disease virus, like many circoviruses, encode only two genes: a capsid protein and a replication initiation protein. The capsid protein forms distinct macromolecular assemblies during replication and here we elucidate these structures at high resolution, showing that these complexes reverse the exposure of the N-terminal arginine rich domain responsible for DNA binding and nuclear localization. We show that assembly of these complexes is regulated by single-stranded DNA (ssDNA), and provide a structural basis of capsid assembly around single-stranded DNA, highlighting novel binding interfaces distinct from the highly positively charged N-terminal ARM domain
