Event Recognition Using Signal Spectrograms in Long Pulse Experiments
As discharge duration increases, real-time complex analysis of the signal becomes more important. In this context, data acquisition and processing systems must provide models for designing experiments which use event oriented plasma control. One example of advanced data analysis is signal classification. The off-line statistical analysis of a large number of discharges provides information to develop algorithms for the determination of the plasma parameters from measurements of magnetohydrodinamic waves, for example, to detect density fluctuations induced by the Alfvén cascades using morphological patterns. The need to apply different algorithms to the signals and to address different processing algorithms using the previous results necessitates the use of an event-based experiment. The Intelligent Test and Measurement System platform is an example of architecture designed to implement distributed data acquisition and real-time processing systems. The processing algorithm sequence is modeled using an event-based paradigm. The adaptive capacity of this model is based on the logic defined by the use of state machines in SCXML. The Intelligent Test and Measurement System platform mixes a local multiprocessing model with a distributed deployment of services based on Jini
Dilaton in a soft-wall holographic approach to mesons and baryons
We discuss a holographic soft-wall model developed for the description of
mesons and baryons with adjustable quantum numbers n, J, L, S. This approach is
based on an action which describes hadrons with broken conformal invariance and
which incorporates confinement through the presence of a background dilaton
field. We show that in the case of the bound-state problem (hadronic mass
spectrum) two versions of the model with a positive and negative dilaton
profile are equivalent to each other by a special transformation of the bulk
field. We also comment on recent works which discuss the dilaton sign in the
context of soft-wall approaches.Comment: 21 pages, accepted for publication in Phys. Rev.
Hardness of Graph Pricing through Generalized Max-Dicut
The Graph Pricing problem is among the fundamental problems whose
approximability is not well-understood. While there is a simple combinatorial
1/4-approximation algorithm, the best hardness result remains at 1/2 assuming
the Unique Games Conjecture (UGC). We show that it is NP-hard to approximate
within a factor better than 1/4 under the UGC, so that the simple combinatorial
algorithm might be the best possible. We also prove that for any , there exists such that the integrality gap of
-rounds of the Sherali-Adams hierarchy of linear programming for
Graph Pricing is at most 1/2 + .
This work is based on the effort to view the Graph Pricing problem as a
Constraint Satisfaction Problem (CSP) simpler than the standard and complicated
formulation. We propose the problem called Generalized Max-Dicut(), which
has a domain size for every . Generalized Max-Dicut(1) is
well-known Max-Dicut. There is an approximation-preserving reduction from
Generalized Max-Dicut on directed acyclic graphs (DAGs) to Graph Pricing, and
both our results are achieved through this reduction. Besides its connection to
Graph Pricing, the hardness of Generalized Max-Dicut is interesting in its own
right since in most arity two CSPs studied in the literature, SDP-based
algorithms perform better than LP-based or combinatorial algorithms --- for
this arity two CSP, a simple combinatorial algorithm does the best.Comment: 28 page
Mass Spectrum of Strings in Anti de Sitter Spacetime
We perform string quantization in anti de Sitter (AdS) spacetime. The string
motion is stable, oscillatory in time with real frequencies and the string size and energy are bounded. The
string fluctuations around the center of mass are well behaved. We find the
mass formula which is also well behaved in all regimes. There is an {\it
infinite} number of states with arbitrarily high mass in AdS (in de Sitter (dS)
there is a {\it finite} number of states only). The critical dimension at which
the graviton appears is as in de Sitter space. A cosmological constant
(whatever its sign) introduces a {\it fine structure} effect
(splitting of levels) in the mass spectrum at all states beyond the graviton.
The high mass spectrum changes drastically with respect to flat Minkowski
spacetime. For {\it
independent} of and the level spacing {\it grows} with the
eigenvalue of the number operator, The density of states grows
like \mbox{Exp}[(m/\sqrt{\mid\Lambda\mid}\;)^{1/2}] (instead of
\rho(m)\sim\mbox{Exp}[m\sqrt{\alpha'}] as in Minkowski space), thus {\it
discarding} the existence of a critical string temperature.
For the sake of completeness, we also study the quantum strings in the black
string background, where strings behave, in many respects, as in the ordinary
black hole backgrounds. The mass spectrum is equal to the mass spectrum in flat
Minkowski space.Comment: 31 pages, Latex, DEMIRM-Paris-9404
String dynamics in cosmological and black hole backgrounds: The null string expansion
We study the classical dynamics of a bosonic string in the --dimensional
flat Friedmann--Robertson--Walker and Schwarzschild backgrounds. We make a
perturbative development in the string coordinates around a {\it null} string
configuration; the background geometry is taken into account exactly. In the
cosmological case we uncouple and solve the first order fluctuations; the
string time evolution with the conformal gauge world-sheet --coordinate
is given by , where
are given by Eqs.\ (3.15), and is the exponent of the conformal factor
in the Friedmann--Robertson--Walker metric, i.e. . The string
proper size, at first order in the fluctuations, grows like the conformal
factor and the string energy--momentum tensor corresponds to that of
a null fluid. For a string in the black hole background, we study the planar
case, but keep the dimensionality of the spacetime generic. In the null
string expansion, the radial, azimuthal, and time coordinates are
and The first terms of the series represent a
{\it generic} approach to the Schwarzschild singularity at . First and
higher order string perturbations contribute with higher powers of . The
integrated string energy-momentum tensor corresponds to that of a null fluid in
dimensions. As the string approaches the singularity its proper
size grows indefinitely like . We end the paper
giving three particular exact string solutions inside the black hole.Comment: 17 pages, REVTEX, no figure
The Circumnuclear Ring of Ionized Gas in NGC3593
We present the results of narrow-band Halpha+NII imaging of the early-type
spiral NGC3593 in combination with a study of the flux radial profiles of the
NII (lambda: 654.80, 658.34 nm), Halpha, and SII (lambda: 671.65, 673.08 nm)
emission lines along its major axis. The galaxy is known to contain two
counterrotating stellar discs of different size and luminosity. We find that
the Halpha emission mainly derives from a small central region of 57 arcsec x
25 arcsec. It consists of a filamentary pattern with a central ring. This has a
diameter of about 17 arcsec (~ 0.6/h kpc) and it contributes about half of the
total Halpha flux. The ring is interpreted as the result of the interaction
between the acquired retrograde gas which later formed the smaller
counterrotating stellar disc and the pre-existing prograde gas of the galaxy.Comment: Accepted for pubblication in Astronomy and Astrophysics; one latex
