    Infrared and visible scintillation of Ho3+-doped YAG and YLF crystals

    In our effort to develop a new kind of detector for low-energy, low-rate energy deposition events we have investigated the cathodo- and radioluminescence of Ho:YAG and Ho:YLF single crystals in an extended wavelength range from 200 nm to 2200 nm. The emission spectra of both crystals show a much more intense emission in the infrared range than in the visible one. We estimate an infrared light yield of several tens of photons/keV when exciting the crystals with X-rays of energy 48 30 keV. The main reason of this high value is due to the Ho3+ ions energy levels scheme that allows efficient cross relaxation processes to occur even at low dopant concentration

    Cathodo- and radioluminescence of Tm3+^{3+}:YAG and Nd3+^{3+}:YAG in an extended wavelength range

    We have studied the cathodo- and radioluminescence of Nd:YAG and of Tm:YAG single crystals in an extended wavelength range up to ≈5 μ\approx 5\,\mum in view of developing a new kind of detector for low-energy, low-rate energy deposition events. Whereas the light yield in the visible range is as large as ≈104 \approx 10^{4}\,photons/MeV, in good agreement with literature results, in the infrared range we have found a light yield ≈5×104 \approx 5\times 10^{4}\,photons/MeV, thereby proving that ionizing radiation is particularly efficient in populating the low lying levels of rare earth doped crystals.Comment: submitted for publication in Journal of Luminescenc

    A new technique for infrared scintillation measurements

    We propose a new technique to measure the infrared scintillation light yield of rare earth (RE) doped crystals by comparing it to near UV-visible scintillation of a calibrated Pr:(Lu0.75_{0.75}Y0.25_{0.25})3_{3}Al5_5O12_{12} sample. As an example, we apply this technique to provide the light yield in visible and infrared range up to \SI{1700}{nm} of this crystal.Comment: submitted to NIM

    Solvable Lie algebras are not that hypo

    We study a type of left-invariant structure on Lie groups, or equivalently on Lie algebras. We introduce obstructions to the existence of a hypo structure, namely the 5-dimensional geometry of hypersurfaces in manifolds with holonomy SU(3). The choice of a splitting g^*=V_1 + V_2, and the vanishing of certain associated cohomology groups, determine a first obstruction. We also construct necessary conditions for the existence of a hypo structure with a fixed almost-contact form. For non-unimodular Lie algebras, we derive an obstruction to the existence of a hypo structure, with no choice involved. We apply these methods to classify solvable Lie algebras that admit a hypo structure.Comment: 21 pages; v2: presentation improved, typos corrected, notational conflicts eliminated.     Pênfigo foliáceo endêmico (Fogo selvagem): casuística da região nordeste do Estado de São Paulo, Brasil, 1973-1998

    Endemic Pemphigus Foliaceus (EPF) is a bullous autoimmune skin disease whose incidence used to be high in the State of São Paulo (SP), Brazil, during the forties, but has declined thereafter. OBJECTIVES: to report a series of EPF patients from the northeastern region of SP. METHODS: a retrospective study concerning demographic and epidemiological data of patients seen from 1973 to 1998 was conducted at the University Hospital, Faculty of Medicine of Ribeirão Preto, SP. RESULTS: bullous disease was diagnosed in 340 patients, 245 with EPF (72.1%), 9.4 cases per year, 60.4% females, and 70.2% white, 7 to 82 year-old (29.4% in their teens); 46.9% lived in the rural zone. Concerning profession, housewives predominated among women (67.6%) and agricultural workers among men (40.2%). The time of disease was less than 1 year in 62.0% of cases, followed by 1 and 5 years (27%), and more than 5 years for the remaining patients (11%). 36.7% of patients were referred by the Direção Regional de Saúde (DIR) XVIII of Ribeirão Preto, with the largest number of cases being from Ribeirão Preto and Batatais: 33.3% and 23.3%, respectively; 22% from DIR XIII (Franca); 13.5% from DIR VII (Araraquara); 2.9% from DIR IX (Barretos); 4.1% from other DIRs of SP, and 20.8% from other States (16.7% from Minas Gerais). Thirteen (5.3%) patients reported occurrence of the disease in some relative, and 4 (1.6%) in neighbors. CONCLUSIONS: the present data characterize the northeastern region of the state of São Paulo as a remaining endemic focus of EPF.FUNDAMENTOS: O pênfigo foliáceo endêmico (PFE) é doença bolhosa auto-imune, em que o Estado de São Paulo (SP) destacou-se por sua alta incidência na década de 1940, a partir da qual é descrito seu declínio. OBJETIVOS: relatar casuística do PFE na região nordeste de SP. MÉTODO: levantamento de prontuários de pacientes com doenças bolhosas, Hospital das Clínicas da Faculdade de Medicina de Ribeirão Preto, Universidade de São Paulo, 1973 a 1998, anotando-se aspectos demográficos e epidemiológicos. RESULTADOS: Do total de 340 pacientes com doença bolhosa, em 245 foi diagnosticado PFE (72,1%), 9,4 casos/ano. Desses, 60,4% eram mulheres e 70,2%, brancos, de 7 a 82 anos de idade (29,4% entre 10 e 19 anos); 46,9% eram de zona rural. Predominou a profissão doméstica entre as mulheres (67,6%), e lavrador entre os homens (40,2%). Em 62,0%, a duração da doença foi menor que 1 ano; em 27,0%, entre 1 e 5 anos, e, em 11,0%, maior que 5 anos. 36,7% eram procedentes da Direção Regional de Saúde (DIR) XVIII de Ribeirão Preto, sendo que os municípios de Batatais e de Ribeirão Preto apresentaram maior número de casos: 33,3% e 23,3%, respectivamente; 22,0% da DIR XIII (Franca); 13,5% da DIR VII (Araraquara); 2,9% da DIR IX (Barretos); 4,1% de outras DIRs de SP, e 20,8% de outros Estados (16,7% de MG). Treze (5,3%) pacientes relataram PFE em algum familiar, e 4 (1,6%), em vizinhos. CONCLUSÕES: Os dados confirmam a região nordeste de SP como foco endêmico remanescente de PFE

    Particle detection through the quantum counter concept in YAG:Er3+^{3+}

    We report about a novel scheme for particle detection based on the infrared quantum counter concept. Its operation consists of a two-step excitation process of a four level system, that can be realized in rare earth-doped crystals when a cw pump laser is tuned to the transition from the second to the fourth level. The incident particle raises the atoms of the active material into a low lying, metastable energy state, triggering the absorption of the pump laser to a higher level. Following a rapid non-radiative decay to a fluorescent level, an optical signal is observed with a conventional detectors. In order to demonstrate the feasibility of such a scheme, we have investigated the emission from the fluorescent level 4^4S3/2_{3/2} (540 nm band) in an Er3+^{3+}-doped YAG crystal pumped by a tunable titanium sapphire laser when it is irradiated with 60 keV electrons delivered by an electron gun. We have obtained a clear signature this excitation increases the 4I13/2^{4}I_{13/2} metastable level population that can efficiently be exploited to generate a detectable optical signal

    Laser induced fluorescence for axion dark matter detection: a feasibility study in YLiF4_4:Er3+^{3+}

    We present a detection scheme to search for QCD axion dark matter, that is based on a direct interaction between axions and electrons explicitly predicted by DFSZ axion models. The local axion dark matter field shall drive transitions between Zeeman-split atomic levels separated by the axion rest mass energy mac2m_a c^2. Axion-related excitations are then detected with an upconversion scheme involving a pump laser that converts the absorbed axion energy (∼\sim hundreds of μ\mueV) to visible or infrared photons, where single photon detection is an established technique. The proposed scheme involves rare-earth ions doped into solid-state crystalline materials, and the optical transitions take place between energy levels of 4fN4f^N electron configuration. Beyond discussing theoretical aspects and requirements to achieve a cosmologically relevant sensitivity, especially in terms of spectroscopic material properties, we experimentally investigate backgrounds due to the pump laser at temperatures in the range 1.9−4.21.9-4.2 K. Our results rule out excitation of the upper Zeeman component of the ground state by laser-related heating effects, and are of some help in optimizing activated material parameters to suppress the multiphonon-assisted Stokes fluorescence.Comment: 8 pages, 5 figure

    Theta and alpha oscillations as signatures of internal and external attention to delayed intentions: A magnetoencephalography (MEG) study

    Background: Remembering to execute delayed intentions (i.e., prospective memory, PM) entails the allocation of internal and external attention. These processes are crucial for rehearsing PM intentions in memory and for monitoring the presence of the PM cue in the environment, respectively. Aim: The study took advantage of the excellent spatial and temporal resolution of magnetoencephalography (MEG) to delineate the neural mechanisms of the memory and monitoring processes underlying PM. Method: The spatio-temporal dynamic of theta and alpha oscillations were explored in 21 participants in two PM tasks compared to a baseline condition (i.e., a lexical decision task with no PM instruction). The PM tasks varied for the load of internally-directed attention (Retrospective-load task) vs externally-directed attention (Monitoring-load task). Results: Increase in theta activity was observed in the Retrospective-load task, and was particularly expressed in the regions of the Default Mode Network, such as in medial temporal regions, precuneus, posterior cingulate cortex and medial prefrontal cortex. Alpha decrease was the most relevant feature of the Monitoring-load task, and it was expressed over bilateral occipital, occipito-parietal and fronto-temporal regions, as well as over left dorsal fronto-parietal regions. Conclusions: Theta and alpha oscillations are strictly associated with the direction of attention during the PM tasks. In particular, theta increase is linked to internal attention necessary for maintaining the intention active in working memory, whereas alpha decrease supports the external attention for detecting the PM cue in the environment

    Supersymmetric AdS(4) compactifications of IIA supergravity

    We derive necessary and sufficient conditions for N=1 compactifications of (massive) IIA supergravity to AdS(4) in the language of SU(3) structures. We find new solutions characterized by constant dilaton and nonzero fluxes for all form fields. All fluxes are given in terms of the geometrical data of the internal compact space.
