Computer aided manual tracking
A scheme was developed to assist the human operator by augmenting an optic sight manual tracking loop with target rate estimates from a computer control algorithm which can either be a Kalman Filter or an alpha, beta, gamma filter. The idea is for the computer to provide rate tracking while the human operator is responsible for nullifying the tracking error. A simple schematic is shown to illustrate the implementation of this concept. A hybrid real-time man-in-loop simulation was used to compare the tracking performance of the same flight trajectory with or without this form of computer-aided track. Preliminary results show the advantage of computer-aided track against high speed aircraft at close range. However, good tracking before target state estimator maturity becomes more critical for aided track than without. Results are presented for a constant velocity flight trajectory
In the eye of the storm: T cell behavior in the inflammatory microenvironment.
Coordinated unfolding of innate and adaptive immunity is key to the development of protective immune responses. This functional integration occurs within the inflamed tissue, a microenvironment enriched with factors released by innate and subsequently adaptive immune cells and the injured tissue itself. T lymphocytes are key players in the ensuing adaptive immunity and their proper function is instrumental to a successful outcome of immune protection. The site of inflammation is a "harsh" environment in which T cells are exposed to numerous factors that might influence their behavior. Low pH and oxygen concentration, high lactate and organic acid content as well as free fatty acids and reactive oxygen species are found in the inflammatory microenvironment. All these components affect T cells as well as other immune cells during the immune response and impact on the development of chronic inflammation. We here overview the effects of a number of factors present in the inflammatory microenvironment on T cell function and migration and discuss the potential relevance of these components as targets for therapeutic intervention in autoimmune and chronic inflammatory diseases

Non-Perturbative U(1) Gauge Theory at Finite Temperature
For compact U(1) lattice gauge theory (LGT) we have performed a finite size
scaling analysis on lattices for fixed by
extrapolating spatial volumes of size to . Within the
numerical accuracy of the thus obtained fits we find for , 5 and~6
second order critical exponents, which exhibit no obvious
dependence. The exponents are consistent with 3d Gaussian values, but not with
either first order transitions or the universality class of the 3d XY model. As
the 3d Gaussian fixed point is known to be unstable, the scenario of a yet
unidentified non-trivial fixed point close to the 3d Gaussian emerges as one of

NIST torsion oscillator viscometer response: Performance on the LeRC active vibration isolation platform
Critical point viscosity measurements are limited to their reduced temperature approach to T(sub c) in an Earth bound system, because of density gradients imposed by gravity. Therefore, these classes of experiments have been proposed as good candidates for 'microgravity' science experiments where this limitation is not present. The nature of these viscosity measurements dictate hardware that is sensitive to low frequency excitations. Because of the vibratory acceleration sensitivity of a torsion oscillator viscometer, used to acquire such measurements, a vibration isolation sensitivity test was performed on candidate 'microgravity' hardware to study the possibility of meeting the stringent oscillatory sensitivity requirements of a National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) torsion oscillator viscometer. A prototype six degree of freedom active magnetic isolation system, developed at NASA Lewis Research Center, was used as the isolation system. The ambient acceleration levels of the platform were reduced to the noise floor levels of its control sensors, about one microgravity in the 0.1 to 10 Hz bandwidth
Multi-Overlap Simulations for Transitions between Reference Configurations
We introduce a new procedure to construct weight factors, which flatten the
probability density of the overlap with respect to some pre-defined reference
configuration. This allows one to overcome free energy barriers in the overlap
variable. Subsequently, we generalize the approach to deal with the overlaps
with respect to two reference configurations so that transitions between them
are induced. We illustrate our approach by simulations of the brainpeptide
Met-enkephalin with the ECEPP/2 energy function using the global-energy-minimum
and the second lowest-energy states as reference configurations. The free
energy is obtained as functions of the dihedral and the root-mean-square
distances from these two configurations. The latter allows one to identify the

Structure of the Energy Landscape of Short Peptides
We have simulated, as a showcase, the pentapeptide Met-enkephalin
(Tyr-Gly-Gly-Phe-Met) to visualize the energy landscape and investigate the
conformational coverage by the multicanonical method. We have obtained a
three-dimensional topographic picture of the whole energy landscape by plotting
the histogram with respect to energy(temperature) and the order parameter,
which gives the degree of resemblance of any created conformation with the
