Solution of an associating lattice gas model with density anomaly on a Husimi lattice

We study a model of a lattice gas with orientational degrees of freedom which resemble the formation of hydrogen bonds between the molecules. In this model, which is the simplified version of the Henriques-Barbosa model, no distinction is made between donors and acceptors in the bonding arms. We solve the model in the grand-canonical ensemble on a Husimi lattice built with hexagonal plaquettes with a central site. The ground-state of the model, which was originally defined on the triangular lattice, is exactly reproduced by the solution on this Husimi lattice. In the phase diagram, one gas and two liquid (high density-HDL and low density-LDL) phases are present. All phase transitions (GAS-LDL, GAS-HDL, and LDL-HDL) are discontinuous, and the three phases coexist at a triple point. A line of temperatures of maximum density (TMD) in the isobars is found in the metastable GAS phase, as well as another line of temperatures of minimum density (TmD) appears in the LDL phase, part of it in the stable region and another in the metastable region of this phase. These findings are at variance with simulational results for the same model on the triangular lattice, which suggested a phase diagram with two critical points. However, our results show very good quantitative agreement with the simulations, both for the coexistence loci and the densities of particles and of hydrogen bonds. Properties of magnetic nanodots with perpendicular anisotropy

Nanodots with magnetic vortices have many potential applications, such as magnetic memories (VRAMs) and spin transfer nano-oscillators (STNOs). Adding a perpendicular anisotropy term to the magnetic energy of the nanodot it becomes possible to tune the vortex core properties. This can be obtained, e.g., in Co nanodots by varying the thickness of the Co layer in a Co/Pt stack. Here we discuss the spin configuration of circular and elliptical nanodots for different perpendicular anisotropies; we show for nanodisks that micromagnetic simulations and analytical results agree. Increasing the perpendicular anisotropy, the vortex core radii increase, the phase diagrams are modified and new configurations appear; the knowledge of these phase diagrams is relevant for the choice of optimum nanodot dimensions for applications. MFM measurements on Co/Pt multilayers confirm the trend of the vortex core diameters with varying Co layer thicknesses.Comment: 7 pages, 8 figure

Adaptação transcultural da escala de distonia cervical de Toronto (TWSTRS) para o português

Cervical dystonia (CD) is a prevalent and incapacitating movement disorder which needs a thorough clinical evaluation of every patient to better tailor treatment strategies. In Brazil, there are no validated CD scales that measure the burden of dystonia. The aim of our study was to translate and adapt the Toronto Western Spasmodic Torticollis Rating Scale (TWSTRS) to Brazilian Portuguese. After translation and back-translation according to international methods, a pre-test was carried out with 30 patients. Patients under 8 years of formal schooling had severe difficulty in understanding the whole scale. The scale went through a remodeling process, without loss of its conceptual and semantic properties. The new scale was tested in 15 patients, with good understanding scores. We are now in the process of validation of the adapted scale.Distonia cervical (DC) é um transtorno de movimento prevalente e incapacitante, sendo uma avaliação global e consistente de cada paciente necessária para a melhor intervenção diagnóstica e terapêutica. No Brasil, não há escalas validadas para avaliar o impacto da DC. O objetivo deste trabalho foi traduzir e adaptar uma escala mundialmente conhecida e usada, a Toronto Western Spasmodic Torticollis Rating Scale (TWSTRS) para o português. Após a tradução e retro-tradução da escala segundo as normas e critérios internacionais, realizamos o pré-teste com 30 pacientes, sendo que o completo entendimento da escala ficou prejudicado nos pacientes com escolaridade abaixo de 8 anos. Tornou-se necessária a re-adaptação da escala, com modificação de alguns elementos, tentando manter-se sua integridade conceitual e semântica. Após pré-teste adicional com 15 pacientes, verificou-se que a escala foi completamente entendida por praticamente todos os pacientes. A validação da escala está em andamento
