Semiquantitative Infrared Analysis of Diketones and Anhydrides in a Reaction Mixture

    Get PDF
The ozonolysis of a hydroxymethylene ketone yields a mixture of diketone and anhydride. Treatment of hydroxymethylene camphor with ozone affords, in addition to the expected camphor quinone, a surprisingly large amount of camphoric anhydride (56%) via Baeyer-Villager reaction. Use of infrared absorption to analyze the relative amounts of camphor quinone and camphoric anhydride in a reaction mixture was studied by comparing peak heights of their carbonyl stretching bands

Hydrodynamics, erosion and accretion of intertidal mudflats in extremely shallow waters

© 2019 Elsevier B.V. Intertidal flats are shallow-water environments that undergo cyclical variations in water depth, leading to a frequent occurrence of extremely shallow water stages (ESWS; water depths 0.2 m), and the rate of change was an order of magnitude faster than during RDWS. This larger and faster bed-level change occurred even though the ESWS duration only accounted for 10% of the entire tidal cycle. This result occurred because the bed shear stress due to combined current–wave action during ESWS, was, on average, two times higher than during RDWS at the flood stage causing more extensive erosion. Whereas during the ebb stage, this shear stress during ESWS was only half of that during RDWS resulting in greater accretion. The main implications of these results are that, because ESWS occur frequently (twice every tide) and are associated with large bed shear stress and bed-level changes, these conditions are likely to play an important role in morphological changes of intertidal flats. Our study shows that ESWS have a key influence on intertidal flat hydrodynamics and sediment dynamics. Thus our results are the basis for an improved understanding of the coastal morphodynamic processes on intertidal flats

This paper analyzes the harmonic contents of a non-linear load connected to a two-phase microgrid system. Although having the same harmonic content as the single-phase power system when supplying a non-linear load under balanced conditions, the two-phase microgrid system presents the following advantages: 1) constant power through the power line at the balanced condition; 2) two voltages i.e., line-to-line and phase voltages, available by using a three wire system; 3) optimized voltage utilization compared to a three-phase system; and 4) a direct connection of both symmetrical two-phase and single-phase electrical machines. This paper presents an approach for analyzing the harmonics of a two-phase non-linear load in a balanced and unbalanced cases. The mathematical model for the symmetrical component of an unbalanced two-phase system has also been presented in this paper. Finally, a practical implementation of the two-phase system has been performed, where different types of loads are connected to the two-phase power line to test the voltage control performance

A hard metallic material: Osmium Diboride

We calculate the structural and electronic properties of OsB2 using density functional theory with or without taking into account spin-orbit (SO) interaction. Our results show that the bulk modulus with and without SO interaction are 364 and 365 Gpa respectively, both are in good agreement with experiment (365-395 Gpa). The evidence of covalent bonding of Os-B, which plays an important role to form a hard material, is indicated both in charge density, atoms in molecules analysis, and density of states analysis. The good metallicity and hardness of OsB2 might suggest its potential application as hard conductors.Comment: Figures improve

Occultocarpon, a new monotypic genus of Gnomoniaceae on Alnus nepalensis from China

Microfungi in the Gnomoniaceae (Diaporthales, Ascomycetes) comprise species commonly reported as pathogens and endophytes on trees and herbaceous hosts primarily from temperate forests of North America, Europe, and Japan. The diversity of Gnomoniaceae in China is poorly known, although several plant families that occur there specifically the Betulaceae are considered important hosts. An exploratory trip to Yunnan, China, resulted in the discovery of several members of the Gnomoniaceae. In this paper a new monotypic genus, Occultocarpon and its species, O. ailaoshanense, are described and illustrated. A phylogeny based on three genes (LSU, rpb2, tef1-α) reveals that O. ailaoshanense belongs to the Gnomoniaceae and forms a branch distinct from the currently known genera. Occultocarpon ailaoshanense is characterized by perithecia with thin, central to eccentric necks in groups embedded in a stroma and oblong elliptical-elongated, one-septate ascospores. Temperature Derivative of the Superfluid Density in the Attractive Hubbard model

Based on extensions of the grand-canonical Quantum Monte-Carlo algorithm to incorporate magnetic fields, we provide numerical data confirming the existence of a Kosterlitz-Thouless transition in the attractive Hubbard model. Here, we calculate the temperature derivative of the superfluid density, to pin down the transition. Away from half-band filling, the above quantity, shows a response which increases with lattice size at the transition temperature. In contrast, such a signal is not observed for the case of a half-band filling.Comment: Latex 8 pages, 3 figures (in postscript format) appendded at the end of the fil

Observation of anomalous decoherence effect in a quantum bath at room temperature

    Get PDF
Decoherence of quantum objects is critical to modern quantum sciences and technologies. It is generally believed that stronger noises cause faster decoherence. Strikingly, recent theoretical research discovers the opposite case for spins in quantum baths. Here we report experimental observation of the anomalous decoherence effect for the electron spin-1 of a nitrogen-vacancy centre in high-purity diamond at room temperature. We demonstrate that under dynamical decoupling, the double-transition can have longer coherence time than the single-transition, even though the former couples to the nuclear spin bath as twice strongly as the latter does. The excellent agreement between the experimental and the theoretical results confirms the controllability of the weakly coupled nuclear spins in the bath, which is useful in quantum information processing and quantum metrology.Comment: 22 pages, related paper at http://arxiv.org/abs/1102.557

Charge and Spin Structures of a dx2−y2d_{x^2 - y^2} Superconductor in the Proximity of an Antiferromagnetic Mott Insulator

To the Hubbard model on a square lattice we add an interaction, WW, which depends upon the square of a near-neighbor hopping. We use zero temperature quantum Monte Carlo simulations on lattice sizes up to 16×1616 \times 16, to show that at half-filling and constant value of the Hubbard repulsion, the interaction WW triggers a quantum transition between an antiferromagnetic Mott insulator and a dx2−y2d_{x^2 -y^2} superconductor. With a combination of finite temperature quantum Monte Carlo simulations and the Maximum Entropy method, we study spin and charge degrees of freedom in the superconducting state. We give numerical evidence for the occurrence of a finite temperature Kosterlitz-Thouless transition to the dx2−y2d_{x^2 -y^2} superconducting state. Above and below the Kosterlitz-Thouless transition temperature, TKTT_{KT}, we compute the one-electron density of states, N(ω)N(\omega), the spin relaxation rate 1/T11/T_1, as well as the imaginary and real part of the spin susceptibility χ(q⃗,ω)\chi(\vec{q},\omega). The spin dynamics are characterized by the vanishing of 1/T11/T_1 and divergence of Reχ(q⃗=(π,π),ω=0)Re \chi(\vec{q} = (\pi,\pi), \omega = 0) in the low temperature limit. As TKTT_{KT} is approached N(ω)N(\omega) develops a pseudo-gap feature and below TKTT_{KT} Imχ(q⃗=(π,π),ω)Im \chi(\vec{q} = (\pi,\pi), \omega) shows a peak at finite frequency.Comment: 46 pages (latex) including 14 figures in encapsulated postscript format. Sex chromosome positions in human interphase nuclei as studied by in situ hybridization with chromosome specific DNA probes

    Get PDF
Two cloned repetitive DNA probes, pXBR and CY1, which bind preferentially to specific regions of the human X and Y chromosome, respectively, were used to study the distribution of the sex chromosomes in human lymphocyte nuclei by in situ hybridization experiments. Our data indicate a large variability of the distances between the sex chromosomes in male and female interphase nuclei. However, the mean distance observed between the X and Y chromosome was significantly smaller than the mean distance observed between the two X-chromosomes. The distribution of distances determined experimentally is compared with three model distributions of distances, and the question of a non-random distribution of sex chromosomes is discussed. Mathematical details of these model distributions are provided in an Appendix to this paper. In the case of a human translocation chromosome (XqterXp22.2::Yq11Y qter) contained in the Chinese hamster x human hybrid cell line 445 x 393, the binding sites of pXBR and CY1 were found close to each other in most interphase nuclei. These data demonstrate the potential use of chromosome-specific repetitive DNA probes to study the problem of interphase chromosome topography
