    Locomotion strategy selection for a legged wheeled hybrid quadruped using depth images

    Three fundamental locomotion configurations recognized commonly are legged, wheeled, and articulated mechanisms using which a mobile robot can navigate terrains. Hybrid configurations enable execution of different locomotion types separately and in combinations. Such advantage usually implies complexity and necessity in a robust supervisory controller capable of terrain recognition and locomotion strategy selection. We developed the Nazarbayev University (NU) Hybrid Quadruped (Fig. 1) - mobile robot with four legs and wheels.     Günümüzde sıkça kullanılan ve görece yeni bir kavram olan İslamofobi, anlam olarak bir korkuya karşılık gelse de bu kavram temelde, Batı için tehdit oluşturan İslam’a dair antipatiyi/nefreti ifade etmektedir. İslamofobinin temelinde birçok neden yatmaktadır. Bunlar arasında teolojik, kültürel, ekonomik, politik gibi pek çok nedenin yanı sıra oryantalizm ile günümüzde Müslümanlarla doğrudan ilişkilendirilen terör bulunmaktadır. Batı Avrupa eksenli olan bu çalışmada Müslüman nüfusun en fazla olduğu Fransa, Almanya ve İngiltere basını seçilmiştir. Bu ülkelerin basınından sağ ve sol görüşü temsilen ikişer gazete seçilmiş, İslam ve Müslümanlarla ilgili haberlerde İslamofobinin nasıl inşa edildiği karşılaştırmalı bir şekilde ortaya konmuştur. Seçilen haberler, van Dijk’ın haber metinleri için geliştirdiği eleştirel söylem analizine göre çözümlenmiştir. Çalışmanın sonucuna göre, eğer Müslümanlar, herhangi bir olay veya kararın öznesi durumundaysa ya doğrudan negatif olarak temsil edilmekte ya da olumsuz argümanlarla ilişkilendirilerek dolaylı olarak negatif bir şekilde temsil edilmektedir. Fakat Müslümanlar bir olayın parçası, yani edilgen bir konumda ise Müslümanlar için genelde ya kurbanlaştırıcı dramatik bir söylem üretilmekte ya da onlar minimize edilmekte veya yok sayılmaktadır

    Ünsal Oskay, Türkiye’de iletişim alanında ilk doktora tezini yazan isimlerden birisidir. Kitle iletişim kuramlarının Türkiye’de öğrenilmesinde önemli rol oynayan Oskay’ın, kitle iletişimi ile ilgili ortaya koyduğu eserler onu iletişim alanında öncü kuramcılardan birisi haline getirmiştir. Ünsal Oskay, iletişimin yanı sıra eserlerinde çoğunlukla “toplumbilim” olarak ifade ettiği sosyoloji ile siyaset, hukuk gibi sosyal bilimlerin farkı alanlarından birçok eseri de Türkçeye kazandırmıştır. Yaklaşık kırk yılı bulan akademik hayatına on kitap, on beş çeviri kitap ile yüzlerce makale sığdıran Ünsal Oskay, binlerce öğrenci yetiştirmiştir. Oskay, eleştirel sosyal teorinin benimsenmesindeki çabalarıyla, tüm sosyal bilim camiasında her zaman görüşleriyle göz önünde bulundurulması gereken bir isim olmuştur. Bir veri toplama tekniği olan doküman analizinin kullanıldığı bu çalışmada, Oskay’ın kitap, çevirileri ve makalelerinden oluşan tabir-i caizse külliyatının bir panoraması ortaya konmaya çalışılmıştır. Sonuç olarak Oskay, 1960’larda (Ankara Üniversitesi’nde asistan iken) daha çok toplumbilim temalı eserleri Türkçe’ye kazandırırken, kendi kaleme aldığı makaleleri ise iletişim alanından uzaktır. En çok eseri doçent olduğu 1982 yılında veren Oskay’ın çalışmaları teorik olup, ampirik bir çalışması bulunmamaktadır

    Traces of Western Philosophy in the Media’s Islamophobia Discourse

    Islamophobia, which started with the first emergence of Islam but has become a common concept, especially after the September 11 attacks, is one of the most common forms of discrimination that Muslims are subjected to today. Although it means fear of Islam, Islamophobia refers to unfounded fear. The media plays an important role in spreading and reinforcing this fear or prejudice. Islamophobia, which is usually dealt with on a theological basis in the studies carried out, actually has philosophical foundations and this has a more ancient history than theological foundations. So much so that when we look at the anti-Islamic content produced in the media, it is seen that there is a great similarity with the descriptions in Western philosophy. For example, in addition to similar depictions such as Islam being a "religion of the sword", which is constantly associated with terror, the fact that Islam is a religion that emerged from Eastern society has led to a philosophical depiction mixed with orientalist images. This study, in which the document analysis method is used, reveals that the Islamophobic discourses and representations produced by today's Western mainstream media organizations are very similar to the depictions and judgments about Islam and Muslims from the Medieval philosophy to the period of Western thought from the Age to the period of Western thought

    Effects of inclined baffle location and Prandtl number on natural convection in a cavity

    The problem of steady, laminar, conjugate-natural convection in a square cavity with an adiabatic baffle mounted on a vertical wall at different positions is formulated. In this study, natural convection heat transfer in a square cavity with an adiabatic fin mounted on a vertical wall was investigated numerically. Navier-Stokes equations have been performed and they are solved using finite difference method (FDM). Results are obtained for various parameters as the baffle location (0.25 h 0.75), thickness (t=0.033), length of baffle (0.25 w 0.75), Rayleigh numbers (103 Ra 106). Prandtl number values are Pr=0.7, 1 and 7, is investigated. Results were presented with streamlines, isotherms, local and mean Nusselt numbers. It was found that Prandtl number and presence of the baffle on the wall have significant effect on natural convection.Bu çalışmada, düşey duvarına farklı pozisyonlarda adyabatik engel yerleştirilmiş kare bir hacimdeki laminar doğal taşınım ısı transferi formüle edilmiştir. Düşey duvarında engel bulunan kapalı hacimdeki ısı transferi nümerik olarak da incelenmiştir. Navier-Stokes denklemleri kullanılmış ve denklemler sonlu farklar metodu (FDM) ile çözülmüştür. Sonuçlar, engelin farklı yerleşimi (0.25 h 0.75), farklı kalınlığı (t=0.033), farklı uzunluğu (0.25 w 0.75) ve Rayleigh sayıları için (103 Ra 106) sunulmuştur. Prandtl sayısı değeri 0.7, 1 ve 7 alınmıştır. Sonuçlar, akım çizgileri, sıcaklık profilleri, yerel ve ortalama Nusselt sayıları şeklinde gösterilmiştir. Prandtl sayısı ve engelin duvar üzerindeki konumunun, doğal taşınımı önemli derecede etkilediği görülmüştür

    NUTRITIVE VALUES OF SOME ANNUAL CLOVERS (Trifolium sp.) AT DIFFERENT GROWTH STAGES

    This study was conducted between the years of 2001-2002 in the experimental area and laboratory of Field Crops Department of Agriculture Faculty in Trakya University, Tekirdağ (Turkey). Five different clovers [Persian (Trifolium resupinatum L. var. majus Boiss.), Mediterranean (T. spumosum L.), narrow-leaved (T. angustifolium L.), hedgehog (T. echinatum M. Bieb.) and lappa (T. lappaceum L.) clovers] were used. Each plot consisted of 8 rows with a length of 5 m. Row spacing of 30 cm and sowing rate of 10 kg ha-1 were used. Sowing times were on 2.25.2001 and on 2.28.2002. Plots were not irrigated and fertilized after sown and harvest. One cut was taken in both years at 4 growing stages such as pre-bud, pre-bloom, 50% bloom and full-bloom. The central 1 m-2 sections was cut at ground level for dry matter. Approximately 500g samples were dried at 55 °C for 24 hours and stored for one day at room temperature then found dry matter. Crude protein (%) was determined by Kjeldahl method

    CoDet: Sentence-based containment detection in news corpora

    We study a generalized version of the near-duplicate detection problem which concerns whether a document is a subset of another document. In text-based applications, document containment can be observed in exact-duplicates, near-duplicates, or containments, where the first two are special cases of the third. We introduce a novel method, called CoDet, which focuses particularly on this problem, and compare its performance with four well-known near-duplicate detection methods (DSC, full fingerprinting, I-Match, and SimHash) that are adapted to containment detection. Our method is expandable to different domains, and especially suitable for streaming news. Experimental results show that CoDet effectively and efficiently produces remarkable results in detecting containments. © 2011 ACM

    Asynchronous Interaction Aggregation for Action Detection

    Understanding interaction is an essential part of video action detection. We propose the Asynchronous Interaction Aggregation network (AIA) that leverages different interactions to boost action detection. There are two key designs in it: one is the Interaction Aggregation structure (IA) adopting a uniform paradigm to model and integrate multiple types of interaction; the other is the Asynchronous Memory Update algorithm (AMU) that enables us to achieve better performance by modeling very long-term interaction dynamically without huge computation cost. We provide empirical evidence to show that our network can gain notable accuracy from the integrative interactions and is easy to train end-to-end. Our method reports the new state-of-the-art performance on AVA dataset, with 3.7 mAP gain (12.6% relative improvement) on validation split comparing to our strong baseline. The results on dataset UCF101-24 and EPIC-Kitchens further illustrate the effectiveness of our approach. Source code will be made public at: https://github.com/MVIG-SJTU/AlphAction

    Analysis of thermal mixing in circle shaped body inserted inclined channel

    In this study, thermal mixing (TM) phenomena in a rectangle channel with adiabatic circle shaped body are investigated experimentally. Two parallel jets in different temperatures are located in the channel which has a circular exit hole to supply continuity of mass. Experiments are carried out for different inclination angle of the channel. Also, effects of ratio of flow rate, jets diameters, and temperature difference between hot and cold jets were analyzed. A circle shaped passive element with low thermal conductivity is located into channel to control thermal mixing. Thermal mixing index is calculated from measured temperatures. Experimental results showed that thermal mixing of fluid is effected from geometric parameters, drastically. It is found that TM is function of the temperature difference of inlet jets
