In-water synthesis of isocyanides under micellar conditions

    Get PDF
An in-water dehydration of N-formamides to afford isocyanides using micellar conditions at room temperature is reported. This method allows for the preparation of aliphatic isocyanides in an environmental friendly manner. The replacement of undesirable components such as phosphorous oxychloride, triethyl amine and dichloromethane (the classical combination used for the dehydration of N-formamides), by p-toluen sulphonyl chloride, sodium hydrogen carbonate and water makes this transformation really sustainable and safe

A stand level scenario model for the Norwegian forestry – a case study on forest management under climate change

Carbon sequestration and income generation are competing objectives in modern forest management. The climate commitments of many countries depend on forests as carbon sinks which must be quantified, monitored, and projected into the future. For projections we need tools to model forest development and perform scenario analyses to assess future carbon sequestration potentials under different management regimes, the expected net present value of such regimes, and possible impacts of climate change. We propose a scenario analysis software tool (GAYA 2.0) that can assist in answering these types of questions using stand level simulations, detailed carbon flow models and an optimizer. This paper has two objectives: (1) to describe GAYA 2.0, and (2) demonstrate its potential in a case study where we analyze the forest carbon balance over a region in Norway based on national forest inventory sample plots. The tool was used to map the optimality front between the carbon benefit and net present value. We observed changes in net present value for different levels of carbon benefit as well as changes in optimal management strategies. We predicted future changes in several forest carbon pools as well as albedo and illustrated the impact of gradual increase in forest productivity (i.e., due to climate warming). Having been updated and modernized from its previous version with increased attention to forest carbon and energy fluxes, GAYA 2.0 is an effective tool that offers multiple opportunities to perform various types of scenario analyses in forest management

Synthesis of heteroarylogous 1H-Indole-3-carboxamidines via a three-component interrupted Ugi reaction

    Get PDF
A novel one-pot multicomponent synthesis of heteroarylogous 1H-indole-3-carboxamidines starting from readily available N-alkyl-N-(1H-indol-2-ylmethyl)amines, isocyanides, and carbonyl compounds is reported. The strategy exploits the ability of the indole nucleus to interrupt the classical Ugi reaction, by intercepting the nascent nitrilium ion

A case study of interventions to facilitate learning for pupils with hearing impairment in Tanzania

    Get PDF
Background: Hearing is essential for learning in school, and untreated hearing loss may hinder quality education and equal opportunities. Detection of children with hearing loss is the first step in improving the learning situation, but effective interventions must also be provided. Hearing aids can provide great benefit for children with hearing impairment, but this may not be a realistic alternative in many low- and middle-income countries because of the shortage of hearing aids and hearing care service providers. Objective: In this study, alternative solutions were tested to investigate the potential to improve the learning situation for children with hearing impairment. Method: Two technical solutions (a personal amplifier with and without remote microphone) were tested, in addition to an approach where the children with hearing impairment were moved closer to the teacher. A Swahili speech-in-noise test was developed and used to assess the effect of the interventions. Results: The personal sound amplifier with wireless transmission of sound from the teacher to the child gave the best results in the speech-in-noise test. The amplifier with directive microphone had limited effect and was outperformed by the intervention where the child was moved closer to the teacher. Conclusion: This study, although small in sample size, showed that personal amplification with directive microphones did little to assist children with hearing impairment. It also indicated that simple actions can be used to improve the learning situation for children with hearing impairment but that the context (e.g. room acoustical parameters) must be taken into account when implementing interventions. Contribution: The study gives insight into how to improve the learning situation for school children with hearing impairment and raises concerns about some of the known technical solutions currently being used.publishedVersio

M004 In aortic stenosis, 2D speckle tracking differentiates left ventricular dysfunction load- to remodelling-dependant

BackgroundIn aortic stenosis, it is not known which between longitudinal, radial and circumferential contraction is influenced by loading conditions or remodelling. To test our hypothesis and to understand left ventricular function recovery, we investigated patients at early, i.e. 7 days (contractility enhancement load-dependant) and at late follow-up, i.e. 3 months (contractility enhancement remodelling-dependant) after transcutaneous aortic valve implantation (TAVI).Methods and ResultsTwenty-three subjects (AS: valve orifice < or =0.7cm2; 14 female; mean age, 84+/-6 years) were studied. All subjects of the study had conventional 2D-Doppler echocardiography and speckle tracking analysis (GE HealthCare). Speckle tracking was sampled in short-axis view for radial and circumferential strain and in apical 4, 3 and 2-chamber view for averaged longitudinal strain. Measurements were performed before, 7 days and 3 months after TAVI. Mean pressure gradient decreased from 41±20mmHg to 10±3mmHg (p<0.001) while aortic valve area increased from 0.6±0.1 to 1.7±0.2cm2 (p<0.001) after implantation. Biplane Simpson EF was 50±10 %, 51±13 and 58±11 % at baseline, 7-day and 3-month follow-up (p=0.01), respectively. Improvement of circumferential strain found 7 days after TAVI is sustained at 3 months. Radial strain increased shortly after TAVI, then decreased at 3 months and was compensated by improvement of longitudinal strain (see figure).ConclusionIn patients with aortic stenosis, radial contraction is load dependant, circumferential contraction is both load- and remodelling-dependant, whereas longitudinal contraction is remodeling-dependant

Osteosynthesis metal plate system for bone fixation using bicortical screws: numerical–experimental characterization

This study reports the numerical and experimental characterization of a standard immobilization system currently being used to treat simple oblique bone fractures of femoral diaphyses. The procedure focuses on the assessment of the mechanical behavior of a bone stabilized with a dynamic compression plate (DCP) in a neutralization function, associated to a lag screw, fastened with surgical screws. The non-linear behavior of cortical bone tissue was revealed through four-point bending tests, from which damage initiation and propagation occurred. Since screw loosening was visible during the loading process, damage parameters were measured experimentally in independent pull-out tests. A realistic numerical model of the DCP-femur setup was constructed, combining the evaluated damage parameters and contact pairs. A mixed-mode (I+II) trapezoidal damage law was employed to mimic the mechanical behavior of both the screw–bone interface and bone fractures. The numerical model replicated the global behavior observed experimentally, which was visible by the initial stiffness and the ability to preview the first loading peak, and bone crack satisfactorily. This research was funded by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT), grant numbers SFRH/BD/143736/2019, UIDB/CVT/00772/2020, LA/P/0059/2020, UIDB/04033/2020, PTDC/EME-SIS/28225/2017, UID/EEA/04436/2019 and Laboratório Associado de Energia, Transportes e Aeronáutica (LAETA), grant number UID/EMS/50022/2020
