Looking for a time independent Hamiltonian of a dynamical system
In this paper we introduce a method for finding a time independent
Hamiltonian of a given dynamical system by canonoid transformation. We also
find a condition that the system should satisfy to have an equivalent time
independent formulation. We study the example of damped oscillator and give the
new time independent Hamiltonian for it, which has the property of tending to
the standard Hamiltonian of the harmonic oscillator as damping goes to zero.Comment: Some references added, LATEX fixing

Versal deformations of a Dirac type differential operator
If we are given a smooth differential operator in the variable its normal form, as is well known, is the simplest form
obtainable by means of the \mbox{Diff}(S^1)-group action on the space of all
such operators. A versal deformation of this operator is a normal form for some
parametric infinitesimal family including the operator. Our study is devoted to
analysis of versal deformations of a Dirac type differential operator using the
theory of induced \mbox{Diff}(S^1)-actions endowed with centrally extended
Lie-Poisson brackets. After constructing a general expression for tranversal
deformations of a Dirac type differential operator, we interpret it via the
Lie-algebraic theory of induced \mbox{Diff}(S^1)-actions on a special Poisson
manifold and determine its generic moment mapping. Using a Marsden-Weinstein
reduction with respect to certain Casimir generated distributions, we describe
a wide class of versally deformed Dirac type differential operators depending
on complex parameters
Further insights on predictors of environmental tobacco smoke exposure during the pediatric age
Background: The smoking ban in public places has reduced Environmental Tobacco Smoke (ETS) exposure for non-smokers, but despite this, domestic environments still remain places at high risk of exposure, and, today, about 40% of children worldwide are exposed to ETS at home. The aims of the study are to investigate the contribution of several factors on ETS exposure among a group of Italian children and to evaluate the changes in smoking precautions adopted at home when the smoker is the mother, the father, or both parents, respectively. Methods: A cross-sectional study was performed on a sample of 519 Italian schoolchildren. Information was collected via a questionnaire. Results: 41.4% of the participants lived with at least one smoker. Almost half of the children exposed to ETS lived with one or more smokers who do not observe any home smoking ban. Lower maternal or paternal educational levels significantly increase the risk of ETS exposure at home and the “worst case” is represented by both parents who smoke. Conclusions: More effective preventive interventions are needed to protect children from ETS exposure. Some interventions should be specifically dedicated to smokers with a low educational level and to mothers that smoke
Appropriateness and efficacy of Spa therapy for musculoskeletal disorders. A Delphi method consensus initiative among experts in Italy.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to identify the main aspects concerning appropriateness and efficacy of Spa therapy for musculoskeletal pathologies.
METHODS: A committee of 8 experts from Italian universities, public hospitals, territorial services, research institutes and patient associations was set up. Clinicians from Italian medical centers specialized in rheumatology, rehabilitation and thermal medicine took part in a Delphi process aimed at obtaining consensus statements among the participants.
RESULTS: Large consensus was obtained for statements grouped under the following main themes: treatment indications; choice of treatment modality and treatment efficacy.
CONCLUSIONS: The experts developed a number of consensus statements which may be used as a practical reference to guide the choice of physicians to treat musculoskeletal diseases with Spa therapy
CD40 ligand and MCP-1 as predictors of cardiovascular events in diabetic patients with stroke
Aim: Up-regulation of soluble CD40 ligand (sCD40L) and of monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1) has been found in diabetes and in patients with acute cerebral ischemia. We asked whether (i) the two molecules are similarly upregulated among non-lacunar and lacunar diabetic strokes and (ii) sCD40L and/or MCP-1 predict the risk of cardiovascular events in this setting.Methods: Ninety patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus presenting with an acute ischemic stroke (compared with 45 control subjects) were evaluated on admission and up to 36 months (median 24 months) after the event.Results: Diabetic patients with acute stroke had higher plasma CD40L and MCP-1 than controls (p<0.0001), with no significant differences among lacunar and non-lacunar strokes. On multiple regres-sion analysis, only higher sCD40L quartiles and older age were associated with higher MCP-1 quar-tiles. Forty-eight percent of patients experienced vascular events. Cox regression analysis showed that only the presence of higher sCD40L values independently predicted the recurrence of vascular events.Conclusion: Up-regulation of inflammatory molecules, such as CD40L and MCP-1, is involved in the advanced stage of atherosclerotic cerebro-vascular disease and is associated with increased risk of recurrence of cardiovascular events.AIM:

The Inverse Variational Problem for Autoparallels
We study the problem of the existence of a local quantum scalar field theory
in a general affine metric space that in the semiclassical approximation would
lead to the autoparallel motion of wave packets, thus providing a deviation of
the spinless particle trajectory from the geodesics in the presence of torsion.
The problem is shown to be equivalent to the inverse problem of the calculus of
variations for the autoparallel motion with additional conditions that the
action (if it exists) has to be invariant under time reparametrizations and
general coordinate transformations, while depending analytically on the torsion
tensor. The problem is proved to have no solution for a generic torsion in
four-dimensional spacetime. A solution exists only if the contracted torsion
tensor is a gradient of a scalar field. The corresponding field theory
