Herschel-PACS observation of the 10 Myr old T Tauri disk TW Hya: Constraining the disk gas mass
Planets are formed in disks around young stars. With an age of ~10 Myr, TW Hya is one of the nearest T Tauri stars that is still surrounded by a relatively massive disk. In addition a large number of molecules has been found in the TWHya disk, making TWHya the perfect test case in a large
survey of disks with Herschel–PACS to directly study their gaseous component. We aim to constrain the gas and dust mass of the circumstellar disk around TW Hya. We observed the fine-structure lines of [O_I] and [C_(II)] as part of the open-time large program GASPS. We complement this
with continuum data and ground-based ^(12)CO 3–2 and ^(13)CO 3–2 observations. We simultaneously model the continuum and the line fluxes with the 3D Monte-Carlo code MCFOST and the thermo-chemical code ProDiMo to derive the gas and dust masses. We detect the [O_I] line at 63 μm. The other lines that were observed, [O_I] at 145 μm and [C_(II)] at 157 μm, are not detected. No extended emission has been found. Preliminary modeling of the photometric and line data assuming [^(12)CO]/[^(13)CO] = 69 suggests a dust mass for grains with radius <1 mm of ~1.9 × 10^(−4) M_⊙ (total solid mass of 3 × 10^(−3) M_⊙) and a gas mass of (0.5–5) ×10^(−3) M_⊙. The gas-to-dust mass may be lower than the standard interstellar value of 100
Process for preparing liquid metal electrical contact device
The parts of an electrical contact device are treated by sputter etching to remove the parent metal oxide. Prior to exposure of the electrodes to any oxygen, a sacrificial metal is sputter deposited on the parts. Preferably this sacrificial metal is one that oxidizes slowly and is readily dissolved by the liquid metal. The sacrificial metal may then be removed from unwanted areas. The remainder of the ring and the probe to be wet by the liquid metal are submerged in the liquid metal or the liquid metal is flushed over these areas, preferably while they are being slightly abraded, unitl all the sacrificial material on these portions is wet by the liquid metal. In doing so the liquid metal dissolves the sacrificial metal and permanently wets the parent metal. Preferred materials used in the process and for the electrodes of electrical contact devices are high purity (99.0%) nickel or AISI type 304 stainless steel for the electrical contact devices, gallium as the liquid metal, and gold as the sacrificial material

Evaluation of ERTS data for certain hydrological uses
The author has identified the following significant results. A snow-extent map of the American River basin was prepared for 27 May 1973 from MSS band 4 imagery. The basin was 14% snow covered. NOAA-2 visible band imagery was used to determine date of disappearance of snow in the basin: 15 July 1973. A snowmelt curve comparing ERTS-1 and NOAA-2 snow-extent maps is provided. ERTS-1 data were superior in quality and outstanding in cartographic fidelity and were found to be an excellent control or calibration for the distorted and coarse (1 km) imagery from NOAA-2's VHRR which, however, is available on a daily basis
AE-C attitude determination and control prelaunch analysis and operations plan
A description of attitude control support being supplied by the Mission and Data Operations Directorate is presented. Included are descriptions of the computer programs being used to support the missions for attitude determination, prediction, and control. In addition, descriptions of the operating procedures which will be used to accomplish mission objectives are provided
Thunderstorm vertical velocities and mass flux estimated from satellite data
Infrared geosynchronous satellite data with an interval of five minutes between images are used to estimate thunderstorm top ascent rates on two case study days. A mean vertical velocity of 3.5/ms for 19 clouds is calculated at a height of 8.7 km. This upward motion is representative of an area of approximately 10km on a side. Thunderstorm mass flux of approximately 2x10 to the 11th power/gs is calculated, which compares favorably with previous estimates. There is a significant difference in the mean calculated vertical velocity between elements associated with severe weather reports (w bar=4.6/ms) and those with no such reports (2.5/ms). Calculations were made using a velocity profile for an axially symmetric jet to estimate the peak updraft velocity. For the largest observed w value of 7.8/ms the calculation indicates a peak updraft of approximately 50/ms
Extracting Energy from a Black Hole through Its Disk
When some magnetic field lines connect a Kerr black hole with a disk rotating
around it, energy and angular momentum are transferred between them. If the
black hole rotates faster than the disk, for a thin Keplerian
disk, then energy and angular momentum are extracted from the black hole and
transferred to the disk ( is the mass and is the angular momentum
of the black hole). This way the energy originating in the black hole may be
radiated away by the disk.
The total amount of energy that can be extracted from the black hole spun
down from to by a thin Keplerian disk is
. This is larger than which can be
extracted by the Blandford-Znajek mechanism.Comment: 8 pages, 2 figure
Operational applications of NOAA-VHRR imagery in Alaska
Near-real time operational applications of NOAA satellite enhanced thermal infrared imagery to snow monitoring for river flood forecasts, and a photographic overlay technique of imagery to enhance snowcover are presented. Ground truth comparisons show a thermal accuracy of approximately + or - 1 C for detection of surface radiative temperatures. The application of NOAA imagery to flood mapping is also presented
