A RECEPTOR FOR ANTIBODY ON B LYMPHOCYTES : I. METHOD OF DETECTION AND FUNCTIONAL SIGNIFICANCE
Evidence is presented for the existence on all B lymphocytes, but not on T lymphocytes, of a membrane-associated receptor for antibody. The receptor was detected by a radioautographic technique in which lymphoid cells were incubated with antibody followed by the corresponding radioiodinated antigen. The ease with which antibody eluted during washing indicated that the bond between antibody and cell was weak. The formation of an antibody-antigen complex on the cell surface, however, stabilized the bond and permitted accurate quantitation of cells with adherent antibody. The ability of several combinations of antibody and antigen to adhere to the cells demonstrated the nonspecificity of the phenomenon and emphasized the need for care in interpretation of antigen-binding studies particularly when immune cells are being used. The identity of antibody-binding lymphocytes was established by two different approaches. In the first, mouse lymphocyte populations greatly enriched for either T cells or B cells were examined. Their T cell content was assessed by means of well-established markers such as the θ C3H isoantigen. When this was compared with the number of antibody-binding cells, an inverse relationship was obtained in each instance; thus almost all thoracic duct cells from athymic mice labeled with an immune complex although none were θ positive. The striking reduction in antibody-binding cells observed in bursectomized chickens provided a second and independent line of evidence suggesting that B cells, not T cells, bind antibody. The ability of B cells from primed animals to bind antibody in vivo made it important to test whether this phenomenon was related to the carriage of immunological memory. No correlation was, however, found between membrane-bound antibody and memory. It was proposed that the existence of a receptor of this kind may provide a rational explanation for antibody-dependent killing of target cells and may prove of importance in antigen concentration particularly during the secondary response
Uist Lagoons Survey
Scotland has around a hundred saline lagoons, coastal lochs that are not quite as saline as the sea. A small number of organisms are confined to these lochs, but most of these are very small and belong to groups that are difficult to identify. A consortium of specialists in identification at the National Museum of Scotland and ecologists sampled most of the saline lagoons on designated sites (SSSI and SAC) in the Uists, the area believed to have the best biodiversity of lagoon organisms in Scotland. The study not only confirmed the presence of these specialist species, but also that they were more widely distributed in the Uists than had been believed. Samples of the organisms have been placed in the permanent collections of the National Museum of Scotland and (for plants) in the Royal Botanic Gardens Edinburgh, where they will be available for future study
A physical interpretation of the jet-like X-ray emission from supernova remnant W49B
In the framework of the study of supernova remnants and their complex
interaction with the interstellar medium and the circumstellar material, we
focus on the galactic supernova remnant W49B. Its morphology exhibits an X-ray
bright elongated nebula, terminated on its eastern end by a sharp perpendicular
structure aligned with the radio shell. The X-ray spectrum of W49B is
characterized by strong K emission lines from Si, S, Ar, Ca, and Fe. There is a
variation of the temperature in the remnant with the highest temperature found
in the eastern side and the lowest one in the western side. The analysis of the
recent observations of W49B indicates that the remnant may be the result of an
asymmetric bipolar explosion where the ejecta are collimated along a jet-like
structure and the eastern jet is hotter and more Fe-rich than the western one.
Another possible scenario associates the X-ray emission with a spherical
explosion where parts of the ejecta are interacting with a dense belt of
ambient material. To overcome this ambiguity we present new results of the
analysis of an XMM-Newton observation and we perform estimates of the mass and
energy of the remnant. We conclude that the scenario of an anisotropic jet-like
explosion explains quite naturally our observation results, but the association
of W49B with a hypernova and a gamma-ray burst, although still possible, is not

A database and tool for boundary conditions for regional air quality modeling: description and evaluation
Transported air pollutants receive increasing attention as regulations
tighten and global concentrations increase. The need to represent
international transport in regional air quality assessments requires improved
representation of boundary concentrations. Currently available observations
are too sparse vertically to provide boundary information, particularly for
ozone precursors, but global simulations can be used to generate spatially
and temporally varying lateral boundary conditions (LBC). This study presents
a public database of global simulations designed and evaluated for use as LBC
for air quality models (AQMs). The database covers the contiguous United
States (CONUS) for the years 2001–2010 and contains hourly varying
concentrations of ozone, aerosols, and their precursors. The database is
complemented by a tool for configuring the global results as inputs to
regional scale models (e.g., Community Multiscale Air Quality or
Comprehensive Air quality Model with extensions). This study also presents an
example application based on the CONUS domain, which is evaluated against
satellite retrieved ozone and carbon monoxide vertical profiles. The results
show performance is largely within uncertainty estimates for ozone from the
Ozone Monitoring Instrument and carbon monoxide from the Measurements Of
Pollution In The Troposphere (MOPITT), but there were some notable biases
compared with Tropospheric Emission Spectrometer (TES) ozone. Compared with
TES, our ozone predictions are high-biased in the upper troposphere,
particularly in the south during January. This publication documents the
global simulation database, the tool for conversion to LBC, and the
evaluation of concentrations on the boundaries. This documentation is
intended to support applications that require representation of long-range
transport of air pollutants
Surface Instability in Windblown Sand
We investigate the formation of ripples on the surface of windblown sand
based on the one-dimensional model of Nishimori and Ouchi [Phys. Rev. Lett. 71,
197 (1993)], which contains the processes of saltation and grain relaxation. We
carry out a nonlinear analysis to determine the propagation speed of the
restabilized ripple patterns, and the amplitudes and phases of their first,
second, and third harmonics. The agreement between the theory and our numerical
simulations is excellent near the onset of instability. We also determine the
Eckhaus boundary, outside which the steady ripple patterns are unstable.Comment: 23 pages, 8 figure
