This study historically analyzes the scientific output of Mathematics to describe its structure, notions and scientific origin using the historiographical method. The research data consisted of scientific outputs of Mathematics in ISI database, Science Citation Index (SCI) and Social Science Citation Index (SSCI) during 8 years (1990 to 2007). The data collection tool was the search engine and the analysis part of the WOS and also HistCiteTM software. According to White (2003), the sample of the study was circa one percent of the studied data (i.e. 120 documents) that was analyzed based on two different aspects: Local Citation Score (LCS) and Global Citation Score (GCS).The research results show that with regard to Local Citation Score (LCS), five scientific clusters were formed and all of them were related to different fields of “Mathematics Education”. Based on Global Citation Score (GCS), there were no significant scientific cluster in this field, and this is while the amount of Global Citation Score was significantly more than Local Citation Score. According to the findings it seems that: 1.  The major scientific clusters and transitions in Mathematics are mostly related to theoretical fields as this issue has caused a new paradigm in this discipline. 2.  The amount of this scientific field’s influence on Applied Mathematics is much more than the non- Applied Mathematics

Visualizing the Intellectual Structure of Iranian Physicists in Scisearch during 1990-2009: An Author Co-Citation Analysis (ACA)

The purpose of this paper was to study and map the intellectual structure of Iranian physicists using author co-citation technique during 1990-2009. The results of the study showed that Iranian physicists have produced 6290 documents indexed in Science Citation Index (SciSearch) during the studied period. Publication counts have grown at an approximate rate of 24/70 % per year. Setare M.R. with 121 documents was the most productive Iranian author in this study. Applied Physics, with1564 documents was the most interesting subject area for the Iranian physicists. We identified 42 Iranian and international physicists who were highly co-cited in 6290 documents during the studied period. Using principal components analysis, 8 subject factors were extracted. The subject areas of factors were in: "Physics, Particles & Fields", "Astronomy & Astrophysics", “Physics, Mathematical", “Physics, Multidisciplinary", "Physics, Nuclear", "Cosmology", "Physics, Atomic, Molecular & Chemical", and "Physics, Fluids & Plasmas". The PFNet map of the intellectual structure of Iranian physicists in SciSearch during 1990-2009 showed a central subject area in "Physics, Particles & Field" with Witten E. as its focal author. The other clusters were rooted in this essential cluster

The purpose of this study was to map the structure of scientific outputs of petroleum field in Science Citation Index (SCI) accessible via Web of Science (WOS) during 1990 to 2011 and determine the position of Iran. The used research methods were citation analysis and historiography. The results showed that there were totally 26859 records indexed in the petroleum discipline during 1990-2011 in SCI. USA, 7237 documents (27.28%), was the most collaborative country in this research. Iran with 321 documents ranked 21th country among all countries. The American author, Marshall A.G., with 85 documents ranked top among the most productive authors. In Iran, Kharrat from Petroleum University of Technology with 8 documents was the most productive Iranian author in petroleum field. Among the institutes and universities, Chinese Academy of Science was the most productive with 530 documents. Among the institutes and universities at national level, Tehran University has the first place with 53 documents. Energy & Fuels, Organic Geochemistry, and Abstracts of Papers of the American Chemical Society were the most important journals in terms of production and citation (both LCS and GCS) in petroleum field. The scientific map of petroleum field was drawn using HistCiteTM software. The analysis of the map revealed six thematic clusters including “Analysis and evaluation of compounds and elements of molecular structure of petroleum”, “Analysis and evaluation of compounds and elements of molecular structure of petroleum using mass spectrometry”, “reviewing and modeling of conditions of production and formation of source rock”, “survey of petroleum and its compounds biodegradation by bacteria and algae”, “survey of characteristics and history of petroleum reservoir”, and “survey of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs)”

Worldwide topology of the scientific subject profile: a macro approach in the country level

[Background] Models for the production of knowledge and systems of innovation and science are key elements for characterizing a country in view of its scientific thematic profile. With regard to scientific output and publication in journals of international visibility, the countries of the world may be classified into three main groups according to their thematic bias.[Methodology/Principal Findings] This paper aims to classify the countries of the world in several broad groups, described in terms of behavioural models that attempt to sum up the characteristics of their systems of knowledge and innovation. We perceive three clusters in our analysis: 1) the biomedical cluster, 2) the basic science & engineering cluster, and 3) the agricultural cluster. The countries are conceptually associated with the clusters via Principal Component Analysis (PCA), and a Multidimensional Scaling (MDS) map with all the countries is presented.[Conclusions/Significance] As we have seen, insofar as scientific output and publication in journals of international visibility is concerned, the countries of the world may be classified into three main groups according to their thematic profile. These groups can be described in terms of behavioral models that attempt to sum up the characteristics of their systems of knowledge and innovation

The Past and Future of Evolutionary Economics : Some Reflections Based on New Bibliometric Evidence

This document is the Accepted Manuscript version of the following article: Geoffrey M. Hodgson, and Juha-Antti Lamberg, ‘The past and future of evolutionary economics: some reflections based on new bibliometric evidence’, Evolutionary and Institutional Economics Review, first online 20 June 2016. The final publication is available at Springer via doi: http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s40844-016-0044-3 © Japan Association for Evolutionary Economics 2016The modern wave of ‘evolutionary economics’ was launched with the classic study by Richard Nelson and Sidney Winter (1982). This paper reports a broad bibliometric analysis of ‘evolutionary’ research in the disciplines of management, business, economics, and sociology over 25 years from 1986 to 2010. It confirms that Nelson and Winter (1982) is an enduring nodal reference point for this broad field. The bibliometric evidence suggests that ‘evolutionary economics’ has benefitted from the rise of business schools and other interdisciplinary institutions, which have provided a home for evolutionary terminology, but it has failed to nurture a strong unifying core narrative or theory, which in turn could provide superior answers to important questions. This bibliometric evidence also shows that no strong cluster of general theoretical research immediately around Nelson and Winter (1982) has subsequently emerged. It identifies developmental problems in a partly successful but fragmented field. Future research in ‘evolutionary economics’ needs a more integrated research community with shared conceptual narratives and common research questions, to promote conversation and synergy between diverse clusters of research.Peer reviewedFinal Accepted Versio
