    Film and the Public Memory: The Phenomena of Nonfiction Film Fragments

    Film theory and philosophy have in recent decades rightly critiqued earlier theorists\u27 claims for the fundamentally realist nature of the cinema, and of photography generally. While cognizant of the problematic status of realist representation-of photography being somehow purely or naively representative-this essay nevertheless deliberately recuperates a realist discourse with which to value some forms of nonfiction film. The essay sees nonfiction film fragments as a form of witnessing, and tries to articulate our experience of such film in terms of memorializing the people and events it bears witness to. The essay goes even further in its claims on behalf of a realist cinematic memory, suggesting that nonfiction fragments constitute a mode of perception that affords trustworthy historical witnessing. That is, the fragmentary status of some film is what paradoxically restores wholeness to the person or place of which it is a glimpse. In a Bazinian and Cavellian mode of writing, this introductory essay to the phenomena of nonfiction film fragments aims as much to be evocative of our experience of film as public memory, as critical of it

    The environmental education program of an urban elementary school

    The purpose of this investigation was to develop an urban environmental program as a proposed model for teachers of grades 4-6 in an urban elementary school. The program is designed for the urban teacher who desires to bring the concepts of environmental education into the classroom as an integral part of the existing curriculum. The proposed program was developed from information obtained in a review of pertinent literature, and the planning and operation of a three month summer pilot environmental education program in a disadvantaged, racially mixed urban community of Knoxville, Tennessee. The pilot program study area was examined and interpreted through the use of appropriate maps, conferences with local officials and agencies, and a survey of the human and physical resources of the community, including educational, recreational, socioeconomic factors and additional factors in the physical environment. The urban program was designed using selected activities and strategies developed during the operation of the pilot program. The proposed program is structured around eight units, each consisting of a unit objective, basic vocabulary, related subject areas and suggested activities. By selecting the appropriate activities the program may be used for grades 4-6. The units are integrated into a program using the concept of a system, with inputs, interactions, and outputs. The basic system is the community which is connected to the larger natural and man-made systems by lifelines . An evaluative technique for the program and the individual units is included. Recommendations for further research and study are made for (1) additional programs developed for the urban communities which com plement existing programs and span the educational experience from grades 1-12, and (2) research on the relationships of attitudes to behavior on the long and short term basis, including the development of an instrument to measure the change in attitudes or values of urban students exposed to environmental education programs

    Control of large space structures

    The control of large space structures was studied to determine what, if any, limitations are imposed on the size of spacecraft which may be controlled using current control system design technology. Using a typical structure in the 35 to 70 meter size category, a control system design that used actuators that are currently available was designed. The amount of control power required to maintain the vehicle in a stabilized gravity gradient pointing orientation that also damped various structural motions was determined. The moment of inertia and mass properties of this structure were varied to verify that stability and performance were maintained. The study concludes that the structure's size is required to change by at least a factor of two before any stability problems arise. The stability margin that is lost is due to the scaling of the gravity gradient torques (the rigid body control) and as such can easily be corrected by changing the control gains associated with the rigid body control. A secondary conclusion from the study is that the control design that accommodates the structural motions (to damp them) is a little more sensitive than the design that works on attitude control of the rigid body only

    Interminiband Rabi oscillations in biased semiconductor superlattices

    Carrier dynamics at energy level anticrossings in biased semiconductor superlattices, was studied in the time domain by solving the time-dependent Schroedinger equation. The resonant nature of interminiband Rabi oscillations has been explicitly demonstrated to arise from interference of intrawell and Bloch oscillations. We also report a simulation of direct Rabi oscillations across three minibands, in the high field regime, due to interaction between three strongly coupled minibands.Comment: 13 pages, 16 figure

    A Counting-Focused Instructional Treatment to Improve Number Sense: An Exploratory Classroom-Based Intervention Study

    Developing students’ number sense is a critical area of research in mathematics education because of the role number sense plays in early mathematics learning. In particular, cognitive psychology research has pinpointed verbal counting as a number sense construct that is critical in later mathematics achievement. This study explored variations in 7- and 8-year-old students’ number sense outcomes as they engaged in a counting-focused instructional treatment for differing durations. Sixty students in three elementary classrooms in the United States participated in the counting-focused instructional treatment. A generalized estimating equations (GEE) analysis showed an associated average increase in test scores for students participating in 9 weeks of the counting-focused instructional treatment as compared to students participating in 3 weeks of the instructional treatment. This study provides preliminary results about an instructional practice, based in numerical cognition theory, for elementary mathematics teachers to facilitate opportunities for students to develop their number sense

    Prospective Longitudinal Study of the Pregnancy DNA Methylome: The US Pregnancy, Race, Environment, Genes (PREG) Study

    Purpose The goal of the Pregnancy, Race, Environment, Genes study was to understand how social and environmental determinants of health (SEDH), pregnancy-specific environments (PSE) and biological processes influence the timing of birth and account for the racial disparity in preterm birth. The study followed a racially diverse longitudinal cohort throughout pregnancy and included repeated measures of PSE and DNA methylation (DNAm) over the course of gestation and up to 1 year into the postpartum period. Participants All women were between 18 and 40 years of age with singleton pregnancies and no diagnosis of diabetes or indication of assisted reproductive technology. Both mother and father had to self-identify as either African-American (AA) or European-American (EA). Maternal peripheral blood samples along with self-report questionnaires measuring SEDH and PSE factors were collected at four pregnancy visits, and umbilical cord blood was obtained at birth. A subset of participants returned for two additional postpartum visits, during which additional questionnaires and maternal blood samples were collected. The pregnancy and postpartum extension included n=240 (AA=126; EA=114) and n=104 (AA=50; EA=54), respectively. Findings to date One hundred seventy-seven women (AA=89, EA=88) met full inclusion criteria out of a total of 240 who were initially enrolled. Of the 63 participants who met exclusion criteria after enrolment, 44 (69.8%) were associated with a medical reason. Mean gestational age at birth was significantly shorter for the AA participants by 5.1 days (M=272.5 (SD=10.5) days vs M=277.6 (SD=8.3)). Future plans Future studies will focus on identifying key environmental factors that influence DNAm change across pregnancy and account for racial differences in preterm birth

    Stability and electronic structure of the complex K2_2PtCl6_6 structure-type hydrides

    The stability and bonding of the ternary complex K2_2PtCl6_6 structure hydrides is discussed using first principles density functional calculations. The cohesion is dominated by ionic contributions, but ligand field effects are important, and are responsible for the 18-electron rule. Similarities to oxides are discussed in terms of the electronic structure. However, phonon calculations for Sr2_2RuH6_6 also show differences, particularly in the polarizability of the RuH6_6 octahedra. Nevertheless, the yet to be made compounds Pb2_2RuH6_6 and Be2_2FeH6_6 are possible ferroelectrics. The electronic structure and magnetic properties of the decomposition product, FeBe2_2 are reported. Implications of the results for H storage are discussed
