Teaching and learning in information retrieval
A literature review of pedagogical methods for teaching and learning information retrieval is presented. From the analysis of the literature a taxonomy was built and it is used to structure the paper. Information Retrieval (IR) is presented from different points of view: technical levels, educational goals, teaching and learning methods, assessment and curricula. The review is organized around two levels of abstraction which form a taxonomy that deals with the different aspects of pedagogy as applied to information retrieval. The first level looks at the technical level of delivering information retrieval concepts, and at the educational goals as articulated by the two main subject domains where IR is delivered: computer science (CS) and library and information science (LIS). The second level focuses on pedagogical issues, such as teaching and learning methods, delivery modes (classroom, online or e-learning), use of IR systems for teaching, assessment and feedback, and curricula design. The survey, and its bibliography, provides an overview of the pedagogical research carried out in the field of IR. It also provides a guide for educators on approaches that can be applied to improving the student learning experiences
A multi-layered Bayesian network model for structured document retrieval
New standards in document representation, like for example SGML, XML, and MPEG-7, compel Information Retrieval to design and implement models and tools to index, retrieve and present documents according to the given document structure. The paper presents the design of an Information Retrieval system for multimedia structured documents, like for example journal articles, e-books, and MPEG-7 videos. The system is based on Bayesian Networks, since this class of mathematical models enable to represent and quantify the relations between the structural components of the document. Some preliminary results on the system implementation are also presented
Abstract:The fundamental problem posed by Ricoeur is to see if there is an opposition between the hermeneutics of religious language, in regards to "Hermeneutics of proclamation of the word or kerygmatic", and "phenomenology (manifestation) of the sacred or symbolic of the sacred". In advancing Ricoeur's answer to that question, it is worth noting that the "phenomenology of the sacred" (symbol) of the "hermeneutic of the word" is the condition ‘lingüística’ of the latter. Such differentiation has important implications to the delineation of the religious field and that should now be clarified. Keywords: Hermeneutics, phenomenology, sacred, religious language.</p

Introduction to the special issue on teaching and learning in information retrieval
We present an overview of the special issue in this paper. The main objective is to provide information for lecturers on how to improve the student experience, using current knowledge in the field. To this end we present an overview of six papers covering areas as diverse as tools and methods used to support teaching and learning, pedagogical challenges in teaching mathematics for search, etc
[EN] The available information on phytoplankton biomass and species composition in Galician waters was
studied to find out their spatial variability as well as the annual trends. The areas covered included
the oceanic zone, the shelf and the inner part of the Rías. In general a significant drop in diatoms
was observed. The series also indicated an increase in dinoflagellates, although it was not statistically
significant. The diatom species related to blooms in the area declined, whereas those indicative of
weak upwelling or stratificacion showed an increase. Even though not all trends were significant,
the available data are consistent with the decrease in upwelling intensity over the last 40 years. The
results also suggest that effects of climate changes on phytoplankton may be delayed for several
years. In any case, the large oceanographic variability of the region, along with the lack of continuity

e o fitoplanctoEsta análise das tendencias do fitoplancto en Galicia

Measuring Urban Green Space in Australia
The Hort Innovation Green Cities project “Measuring Australia’s Green Space Asset” (MUGS) undertook a global review of urban green space (UGS) measurement research and engaged with Australian stakeholders to gauge current practice. The overall aim of the project was to foster best-practice UGS planning and management by juxtaposing the scientific state of the art with the contextualised needs expressed by potential Australian end users. The synthesis of findings informed a ‘blueprint’ which sketches the contours of a possible nationally consistent UGS decision-support framework. The framework is illustrated with a worked example from Australia (rapid assessment of urban green space assets using satellite imagery)
Predicting IR Personalization Performance using Pre-retrieval Query Predictors
Personalization generally improves the performance of queries but in a few cases it may also harms it. If we are able to predict and therefore to disable personalization for those situations, the overall performance will be higher and users will be more satisfied with personalized systems. We use some state-of-the-art pre-retrieval query performance predictors and propose some others including the user profile information for the previous purpose. We study the correlations among these predictors and the difference between the personalized and the original queries. We also use classification and regression techniques to improve the results and finally reach a bit more than one third of the maximum ideal performance. We think this is a good starting point within
this research line, which certainly needs more effort and improvements. This work has been supported by the Spanish Andalusian “Consejerı́a de Innovación, Ciencia y Empresa” postdoctoral phase of project P09-TIC-4526, the Spanish “Ministerio de Economı́a y Competitividad” projects TIN2013-42741-P and TIN2016-77902-C3-2-P, and the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF-FEDER)
