    Modeling of electron emission processes accompanying Radon-α\alpha-decays within electrostatic spectrometers

    Electrostatic spectrometers utilized in high-resolution beta-spectroscopy studies such as in the Karlsruhe Tritium Neutrino (KATRIN) experiment have to operate with a background level of less than 10^(-2) counts per second. This limit can be exceeded by even a small number of Rn-219 or Rn-220 atoms being emanated into the volume and undergoing alpha-decay there. In this paper we present a detailed model of the underlying background-generating processes via electron emission by internal conversion, shake-off and relaxation processes in the atomic shells of the Po-215 and Po-216 daughters. The model yields electron energy spectra up to 400 keV and electron multiplicities of up to 20 which are compared to experimental data.Comment: 7 figure

    Spectral atlas of massive stars around He I 10830 A

    We present a digital atlas of peculiar, high-luminosity massive stars in the near-infrared region (10470-11000 A) at medium resolution (R~7000). The spectra are centered around He I 10830 A, which is formed in the wind of those stars, and is a crucial line to obtain their physical parameters. The instrumental configuration also sampled a rich variety of emission lines of Fe II, Mg II, C I, N I and Pa gamma. Secure identifications for most spectral lines are given, based on synthetic atmosphere models calculated by our group. We also propose that two unidentified absorption features have interstellar and/or circumstellar origin. For the strongest one (10780 A) an empirical calibration between E(B-V) and equivalent width is provided. The atlas displays the spectra of massive stars organized in four categories, namely Be stars, OBA Iape (or luminous blue variables, LBV candidates and ex/dormant LBVs), OB supergiants and Wolf-Rayet stars. For comparison, the photospheric spectra of non emission-line stars are presented. Selected LBVs were observed in different epochs from 2001 to 2004, and their spectral variability reveals that some stars, such as Eta Car, AG Car and HR Car, suffered dramatic spectroscopic changes during this time interval

    For ferrofluids that are described by a system of hard spheres interacting via dipolar forces we evaluate the magnetization as a function of the internal magnetic field with a Born--Mayer technique and an expansion in the dipolar coupling strength.     On the role of specific drug binding in modelling arterial eluting stents

    In this paper we consider drug binding in the arterial wall following delivery by a drug-eluting stent. Whilst it is now generally accepted that a non-linear saturable reversible binding model is required to properly describe the binding process, the precise form of the binding model varies between authors. Our particular interest in this manuscript is in assessing to what extent modelling specific and non-specific binding in the arterial wall as separate phases is important. We study this issue by extending a recently developed coupled model of drug release and arterial tissue distribution, and comparing simulated profiles of drug concentration and drug mass in each phase within the arterial tissue

    The three-dimensional structure of the Eta Carinae Homunculus

    We investigate, using the modeling code SHAPE, the three-dimensional structure of the bipolar Homunculus nebula surrounding Eta Carinae, as mapped by new ESO VLT/X-Shooter observations of the H2 λ=2.12125\lambda=2.12125 micron emission line. Our results reveal for the first time important deviations from the axisymmetric bipolar morphology: 1) circumpolar trenches in each lobe positioned point-symmetrically from the center and 2) off-planar protrusions in the equatorial region from each lobe at longitudinal (~55 degrees) and latitudinal (10-20 degrees) distances from the projected apastron direction of the binary orbit. The angular distance between the protrusions (~110 degrees) is similar to the angular extent of each polar trench (~130 degrees) and nearly equal to the opening angle of the wind-wind collision cavity (~110 degrees). As in previous studies, we confirm a hole near the centre of each polar lobe and no detectable near-IR H2 emission from the thin optical skirt seen prominently in visible imagery. We conclude that the interaction between the outflows and/or radiation from the central binary stars and their orientation in space has had, and possibly still has, a strong influence on the Homunculus. This implies that prevailing theoretical models of the Homunculus are incomplete as most assume a single star origin that produces an axisymmetric nebula. We discuss how the newly found features might be related to the Homunculus ejection, the central binary and the interacting stellar winds.
