    A monopole solution from noncommutative multi-instantons

    We extend the relation between instanton and monopole solutions of the selfduality equations in SU(2) gauge theory to noncommutative space-times. Using this approach and starting from a noncommutative multi-instanton solution we construct a U(2) monopole configuration which lives in 3 dimensional ordinary space. This configuration resembles the Wu-Yang monopole and satisfies the selfduality (Bogomol'nyi) equations for a U(2) Yang-Mills-Higgs system.Comment: 19 pages; title and abstract changed, brane interpretation corrected.     Vacuum fluctuations of a scalar field near a reflecting boundary and their effects on the motion of a test particle

    The contribution from quantum vacuum fluctuations of a real massless scalar field to the motion of a test particle that interacts with the field in the presence of a perfectly reflecting flat boundary is here investigated. There is no quantum induced dispersions on the motion of the particle when it is alone in the empty space. However, when a reflecting wall is introduced, dispersions occur with magnitude dependent on how fast the system evolves between the two scenarios. A possible way of implementing this process would be by means of an idealized sudden switching, for which the transition occurs instantaneously. Although the sudden process is a simple and mathematically convenient idealization it brings some divergences to the results, particularly at a time corresponding to a round trip of a light signal between the particle and the wall. It is shown that the use of smooth switching functions, besides regularizing such divergences, enables us to better understand the behavior of the quantum dispersions induced on the motion of the particle. Furthermore, the action of modifying the vacuum state of the system leads to a change in the particle energy that depends on how fast the transition between these states is implemented. Possible implications of these results to the similar case of an electric charge near a perfectly conducting wall are discussed.Comment: 17 pages, 8 figure

    Non(anti)commutative superspace with coordinate-dependent deformation

    We consider non(anti)commutative superspace with coordinate dependent deformation parameters CαβC^{\alpha\beta}. We show that a chiral N=1/2{\cal N}=1/2 supersymmetry can be defined and that chiral and antichiral superfields are still closed under the Moyal-Weyl associative product implementing the deformation. A consistent N=1/2{\cal N}=1/2 Super Yang-Mills deformed theory can be constructed provided CαβC^{\alpha\beta} satisfies a suitable condition which can be connected with the graviphoton background at the origin of the deformation.     Transport Processes in Metal-Insulator Granular Layers

    Tunnel transport processes are considered in a square lattice of metallic nanogranules embedded into insulating host to model tunnel conduction in real metal/insulator granular layers. Based on a simple model with three possible charging states (±\pm, or 0) of a granule and three kinetic processes (creation or recombination of a ±\pm pair, and charge transfer) between neighbor granules, the mean-field kinetic theory is developed. It describes the interplay between charging energy and temperature and between the applied electric field and the Coulomb fields by the non-compensated charge density. The resulting charge and current distributions are found to be essentially different in the free area (FA), between the metallic contacts, or in the contact areas (CA), beneath those contacts. Thus, the steady state dc transport is only compatible with zero charge density and ohmic resistivity in FA, but charge accumulation and non-ohmic behavior are \emph{necessary} for conduction over CA. The approximate analytic solutions are obtained for characteristic regimes (low or high charge density) of such conduction.
