Additive unit representations in global fields - A survey

We give an overview on recent results concerning additive unit representations. Furthermore the solutions of some open questions are included. The central problem is whether and how certain rings are (additively) generated by their units. This has been investigated for several types of rings related to global fields, most importantly rings of algebraic integers. We also state some open problems and conjectures which we consider to be important in this field.Comment: 13 page

A construction of integer-valued polynomials with prescribed sets of lengths of factorizations

For an arbitrary finite set S of natural numbers greater 1, we construct an integer-valued polynomial f, whose set of lengths in Int(Z) is S. The set of lengths of f is the set of all natural numbers n, such that f has a factorization as a product of n irreducibles in Int(Z)={g in Q[x] | g(Z) contained in Z}.Comment: To appear in Monatshefte f\"ur Mathematik; 11 page

Antimicrobial Activity of Glucoprotamin: A Clinical Study of a New Disinfectant for Instruments

Abstract Objective: To determine the in vitro efficacy of glucoprotamin for the disinfection of instruments. Design: Prospective observational study. Setting: University women's hospital. Methods: Instruments were immersed in saline solution after use, and glucoprotamin was added to a concentration of 1.5% before soaking for 60 minutes. Biocidal activity was determined by the difference in colony-forming units (CFU) on instruments before and after disinfection. Results: One hundred thirty-seven instruments were collected during 10 days and exposed to a 1.5% dilution of glucoprotamin without prior washing. Bioburden before disinfection ranged from 2 × 105 to 7.1 × 107 CFU per instrument. Average bacterial killing was 5.98 log10 CFU ± 0.48 under aerobic conditions and 6.75 log10 CFU ± 0.54 under anaerobic conditions, despite the presence of large amounts of proteins on instruments that were frequently bloody. No vegetative bacteria were isolated in any sample after disinfection. Conclusion: This clinical study confirmed excellent in vitro efficacy of glucoprotamin without prior removal of proteins and debri

Rotordynamic coefficients and leakage flow of parallel grooved seals and smooth seals

    Get PDF
Based on Childs finite length solution for annular plain seals an extension of the bulk flow theory is derived to calculate the rotordynamic coefficients and the leakage flow of seals with parallel grooves in the stator. Hirs turbulent lubricant equations are modified to account for the different friction factors in circumferential and axial direction. Furthermore an average groove depth is introduced to consider the additional circumferential flow in the grooves. Theoretical and experimental results are compared for the smooth constant clearance seal and the corresponding seal with parallel grooves. Compared to the smooth seal the direct and cross-coupled stiffness coefficients as well as the direct damping coefficients are lower in the grooved seal configuration. Leakage is reduced by the grooving pattern
