    The high-intensity hyperon beam at CERN

    A high-intensity hyperon beam was constructed at CERN to deliver Sigma- to experiment WA89 at the Omega facility and operated from 1989 to 1994. The setup allowed rapid changeover between hyperon and conventional hadron beam configurations. The beam provided a Sigma-flux of 1.4 x 10^5 per burst at mean momenta between 330 and 345 Gev/c, produced by about 3 x 10^10 protons of 450 GeV/c . At the experiment target the beam had a Sigma-/pi- ratio close to 0.4 and a size of 1.6 x 3.7 cm^2. The beam particle trajectories and their momenta were measured with a scintillating fibre hodoscope in the beam channel and a silicon microstrip detector at the exit of the channel. A fast transition radiation detector was used to identify the pion component of the beam.Comment: 20 pages, 13 figures. Submitted to Nucl. Instr. Meth.

    Measurement of the Omega_c Lifetime

    We present the measurement of the lifetime of the Omega_c we have performed using three independent data samples from two different decay modes. Using a Sigma- beam of 340 GeV/c we have obtained clean signals for the Omega_c decaying into Xi- K- pi+ pi+ and Omega- pi+ pi- pi+, avoiding topological cuts normally used in charm analysis. The short but measurable lifetime of the Omega_c is demonstrated by a clear enhancement of the signals at short but finite decay lengths. Using a continuous maximum likelihood method we determined the lifetime to be tau(Omega_c) = 55 +13-11(stat) +18-23(syst) fs. This makes the Omega_c the shortest living weakly decaying particle observed so far. The short value of the lifetime confirms the predicted pattern of the charmed baryon lifetimes and demonstrates that the strong interaction plays a vital role in the lifetimes of charmed hadrons.Comment: 15 pages, including 7 figures; gzipped, uuencoded postscrip

    Search for the exotic Ξ(1860)\Xi^{--}(1860) Resonance in 340GeV/c Σ\Sigma^--Nucleus Interactions

    We report on a high statistics search for the Ξ(1860)\Xi^{--}(1860) resonance in Σ\Sigma^--nucleus collisions at 340GeV/c. No evidence for this resonance is found in our data sample which contains 676000 Ξ\Xi^- candidates above background. For the decay channel Ξ(1860)Ξπ\Xi^{--}(1860) \to \Xi^-\pi^- and the kinematic range 0.15<xF<<x_F<0.9 we find a 3σ\sigma upper limit for the production cross section of 3.1 and 3.5 μ\mub per nucleon for reactions with carbon and copper, respectively.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, modification of ref. 43 and 4

    CERN experiment WA89 has studied charmed particles produced by a Sigma^- beam at 340 GeV/c on nuclear targets. Production of particles which have light quarks in common with the beam is compared to production of those which do not. Considerable production asymmetries between D^- and D^p, D_s^ and D_s^+ and Lambda_c and Antilambda_c are observed.     Search for the pentaquark candidate Θ+\Theta^+(1540) in the hyperon beam experiment WA89

    We report on a high-statistics search for the \t1540 resonance in Σ\Sigma^--nucleus collisions at 340 \gevc1 . No evidence for this resonance was found in our data sample which contains 13 millions Ks0π+πK^0_s \to \pi^+\pi^- decays above background. For the decay channel Θ+Ks0p\Theta^+ \to K^0_s p and the kinematic range xF>x_F> 0.05 we find the production cross section to be BR(Θ+Ks0p)σ0<BR(\Theta^+ \to K^0_s p)\cdot \sigma_0 < 1.8 μ\mub per nucleon at 99% CL.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure

    Silicon µ-Strip Detectors with SVX-Chip Readout

    A new silicon strip detector has been designed and constructed for a fixed target experiment at CERN. The system of about 30,000 channels is equipped with SVX chips and read out via a double buffer into FASTBUS memory. Construction and performance during the actual data taking run are discussed. Introduction The Cern hyperon beam experiment WA89 aims, among other topics, at the observation and study of short lived particles produced in a beam of 330 GeV/c hyperons. We want to investigate lifetime and decay branching ratios of charmed baryons and their excited states. Such measurements rely heavily on the reconstruction of charged particle tracks with high accuracy and efficiency in order to detect the decay point distribution of such states with high resolution. Typical detectors used are silicon ¯-strip counters with VLSI readout.     Hepatocyte-specific Smad7 deletion accelerates DEN-induced HCC via activation of STAT3 signaling in mice

    TGF-beta signaling in liver cells has variant roles in the dynamics of liver diseases, including hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). We previously found a correlation of high levels of the important endogenous negative TGF-beta signaling regulator SMAD7 with better clinical outcome in HCC patients. However, the underlying tumor-suppressive molecular mechanisms are still unclear. Here, we show that conditional (TTR-Cre) hepatocyte-specific SMAD7 knockout (KO) mice develop more tumors than wild-type and corresponding SMAD7 transgenic mice 9 months after diethylnitrosamine (DEN) challenge, verifying SMAD7 as a tumor suppressor in HCC. In line with our findings in patients, Smad7 levels in both tumor tissue as well as surrounding tissue show a significant inverse correlation with tumor numbers. SMAD7 KO mice presented with increased pSMAD2/3 levels and decreased apoptosis in the tumor tissue. Higher tumor incidence was accompanied by reduced P21 and upregulated c-MYC expression in the tumors. Activation of signal transducer and activator of transcription factor 3 signaling was found in Smad7-deficient mouse tumors and in patients with low tumoral SMAD7 expression as compared with surrounding tissue. Together, our results provide new mechanistic insights into the tumor-suppressive functions of SMAD7 in hepatocarcinogenesis
