    Optimising and automating the choice of search strings when investigating possible plagiarism

    This paper describes how to optimise the use of Internet search engines when investigating a document for possible non-original content. Services such as Turnitin do not guarantee to identify all non-original content, leading tutors to have to conduct manual searches when suspicion of non-originality remains. Previous studies have suggested that the investigator should manually select memorable phrases from the paper and submit them to a general search engine. The studies in this paper demonstrate that selecting phrases at random is just as effective. Several corpora of documents were obtained from a number of different academic areas, and several phrases were obtained from each. Strings, of increasing length starting with a single word, from these phrases were submitted to specialised and general search engines and the number of hits recorded. A common finding of these searches was that, in almost all cases, strings of six words were sufficiently distinct to uniquely identify the document that the string was taken from. One consequence of this is that totally automated tools are possible for this search-engine based non-originality detection technique

    Plagiarism is a growing problem for universities, many of which are turning to software detection for help in detecting and dealing with it. This paper explores issues around plagiarism and reports on a study of the use of Turnitin in a new university. The purpose of the study was to inform the senior management team about the plagiarism policy and the use of Turnitin. The study found that staff and students largely understood the university’s policy and Turnitin’s place within it, and were very supportive of the use of Turnitin in originality checking. Students who had not used Turnitin were generally keen to do so. The recommendation to the senior management team, which was implemented, was that the use of Turnitin for originality checking should be made compulsory where possible - at the time of the study the use of Turnitin was at the discretion of programme directors. A further aim of the study was to contribute to the sector’s body of knowledge. Prevention of plagiarism through education is a theme identified by Badge and Scott (2009) who conclude an area lacking in research is "investigation of the impact of these tools on staff teaching practices". Although a number of recent studies have considered educational use of Turnitin they focus on individual programmes or subject areas rather than institutions as a whole and the relationship with policy

    This paper describes the findings of a small-scale case study concerning the collaborative aspects of student working practices. It is a pilot investigation into the strategies that are employed by students when attempting Object Oriented programming exercises outside the formal classroom setting. Some of the collaborative practices are simple cases of copying, but others, despite falling within the definition of plagiarism, are a beneficial, and possibly useful, means of enhancing the learning process. Although this study only focuses upon a small group of students in one UK University, the practices highlighted are unlikely to be confined to this one setting
