    Trabalho final de Mestrado para obtenção do grau de Mestre em Engenharia Informática e MultimédiaHoje em dia, a Internet das Coisas tem sido um tema cada vez mais importante nas nossas vidas, tendo vindo a proporcionar mudanças na sociedade, na economia e na vida pessoal, mais especificamente na vida nas cidades e na saúde, e em contexto empresarial, pode contribuir para novos meios de realizar vendas, ampliar as habilidades profissionais e auxiliar empreendedores nas suas tomadas de decisões .Por essa razão, cada vez mais empresas como a Celfocus têm investido nesta área, o que faz com que novas plataformas de Internet das Coisas surjam, cada uma com as suas características e estruturas distintas, mas que podem trabalham com os mesmos tipos de dados, oferecendo ao utilizador funcionalidades diferentes. Apesar de oferecerem funcionalidades diferentes, estas plataformas podem servir de ferramentas potentes para uma empresa quando utilizadas em simultâneo e para o mesmo fim sendo que, em contrapartida a esse ideal, existe uma incompatibilidade entre o mesmo tipo de dados usados por plataformas diferentes por utilizarem estruturas diferentes para os representarem. É neste contexto que surge o tema da estandardização de dados, na área da Internet das Coisas, aplicado neste projeto através do desenvolvimento de um tradutor que, em fase inicial, permite a tradução de dados da IoT.nxt, uma das plataformas utilizadas pela Celfocus, para uma estrutura de dados definida pelo TMForum, uma organização que representa uma aliança entre diversas outras empresas. Assim, a estrutura utilizada pelos dados traduzidos é considerada como a linguagem de representação de dados comum entre todas as plataformas que utilizem este método de tradução no futuro, fazendo com que o mesmo tipo de dados provenientes de plataformas diferentes sejam representados da mesma forma, permitindo assim usufruir das potencialidades de cada plataforma em simultâneo.Nowadays, the Internet of Things has been an increasingly important topic in our lives, having brought changes in our society, in the economy and in our personal lives, more specifically in the context of life in the city and health health, and in a business context, can contribute to new ways to increase sales, expand professional skills and help entrepreneurs in their decision making. For this reason, more and more companies like Celfocus are investing in this area, which makes new Internet of Things platforms emerge, each with its own distinct characteristics and structures, but which can work with the same types of data, offering the user different functionalities. Despite offering different features, these platforms can serve as powerful tools for a company when used at the same time and for the same purpose. The obstacle to this ideal is an incompatibility between the same type of data used by different platforms because they use different structures to represente them. It’s in this context that the issue of data standardization arises, in área of Internet of Things, applied in this project through the development of a translator that, in an initial phase, allows the translation of data fromIoT.nxt, one of the platforms used by Celfocus, to a new data structure defined by TMForum, an organization that represents an alliance between several other companies.Therefore, the structure used by the translated data is considered as the representation language of data common between all platforms that will use this method of translation in the future, causing the same type of data that comes from different platforms to be represented in the same way, allowing the companies to take advantage of the potential of each platform at the same time.N/

    A Near-Solar Metallicity, Nitrogen-Deficient Lyman Limit Absorber Associated with two S0 Galaxies

    From UV spectra of the bright quasar PHL 1811 recorded by FUSE and the E140M configuration on STIS, we have determined the abundances of various atomic species in a Lyman limit system at z = 0.0809 with log N(H I) = 17.98. Considerably more hydrogen may be in ionized form, since the abundances of C II, Si II, S II and Fe II are very large compared to that of O I, when compared to their respective solar abundance ratios. Our determination [O/H] = -0.19 in the H I-bearing gas indicates that the chemical enrichment of the gas is unusually high for an extragalactic QSO absorption system. However, this same material has an unusually low abundance of nitrogen, [N/O] < -0.59, indicating that there may not have been enough time during this enrichment for secondary nitrogen to arise from low and intermediate mass stars. In an earlier investigation we found two galaxies at nearly the same redshift as this absorption system and displaced by 34 and 87 kpc from the line of sight. An r-band image recorded by the ACS on HST indicates these are S0 galaxies. One or both of these galaxies may be the source of the gas, which might have been expelled in a fast wind, by tidal stripping, or by ram-pressure stripping. Subtraction of the ACS point-spread function from the image of the QSO reveals the presence of a face-on spiral galaxy under the glare of the quasar; although it is possible that this galaxy may be responsible for the Lyman limit absorption, the exact alignment of the QSO with the center of the galaxy suggests that the spiral is the quasar host.Comment: 74 pages, 14 figures; to be published in the Astrophysical Journal (Part 1) May 1, 2005 issue.     Heavy element abundances in blue compact galaxies

    We present high-quality ground-based spectroscopic observations of 54 supergiant H II regions in 50 low-metallicity blue compact galaxies with oxygen abundances 12 + log O/H between 7.1 and 8.3. We use the data to determine abundances for the elements N, O, Ne, S, Ar and Fe. We also analyze Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Faint Object Spectrograph archival spectra of 10 supergiant H II regions to derive C and Si abundances in a subsample of 7 BCGs. The main result of the present study is that none of the heavy element-to-oxygen abundance ratios studied here (C/O, N/O, Ne/O, Si/O, S/O, Ar/O, Fe/O) depend on oxygen abundance for BCGs with 12 + log O/H < 7.6 (Z < Zsun/20). This constancy implies that all these heavy elements have a primary origin and are produced by the same massive (M > 10Msun) stars responsible for O production. The dispersion of the C/O and N/O ratios in these galaxies is found to be remarkably small, being only +/-0.03 dex and +/-0.02 dex respectively. This very small dispersion is strong evidence against any time-delayed production of C and primary N in the lowest-metallicity BCGs (secondary N production is negligible at these low metallicities). The absence of a time-delayed production of C and N is consistent with the scenario that galaxies with 12 + log O/H < 7.6 are undergoing now their first burst of star formation, and that they are therefore young, with ages not exceeding 40 Myr. If very low metallicities BCGs are indeed young, this would argue against the commonly held belief that C and N are produced by intermediate-mass (3Msun < M < 9Msun) stars at very low metallicities, as these stars would not have yet completed their evolution in these lowest metallicity galaxies.Comment: 37 pages, 5 EPS figures, to appear in ApJ, February 199

    Novel hydroxyapatite/chitosan bilayered scaffold for osteochondral tissue-engineering applications : scaffold design and its performance when seeded with goat bone marrow stromal cells

    Recent studies suggest that bone marrow stromal cells are a potential source of osteoblasts and chondrocytes and can be used to regenerate damaged tissues using a tissue-engineering (TE) approach. However, these strategies require the use of an appropriate scaffold architecture that can support the formation de novo of either bone and cartilage tissue, or both, as in the case of osteochondral defects. The later has been attracting a great deal of attention since it is considered a difficult goal to achieve. This work consisted on developing novel hydroxyapatite/chitosan (HA/CS) bilayered scaffold by combining a sintering and a freeze-drying technique, and aims to show the potential of such type of scaffolds for being used in TE of osteochondral defects. The developed HA/CS bilayered scaffolds were characterized by Fourier transform infra-red spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction analysis, micro-computed tomography, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Additionally, the mechanical properties of HA/CS bilayered scaffolds were assessed under compression. In vitro tests were also carried out, in order to study the water-uptake and weight loss profile of the HA/CS bilayered scaffolds. This was done by means of soaking the scaffolds into a phosphate buffered saline for 1 up to 30 days. The intrinsic cytotoxicity of the HA scaffolds and HA/CS bilayered scaffolds extract fluids was investigated by carrying out a cellular viability assay (MTS test) using Mouse fibroblastic-like cells. Results have shown that materials do not exert any cytotoxic effect. Complementarily, in vitro (phase I) cell culture studies were carried out to evaluate the capacity of HA and CS layers to separately, support the growth and differentiation of goat marrow stromal cells (GBMCs) into osteoblasts and chondrocytes, respectively. Cell adhesion and morphology were analysed by SEM while the cell viability and proliferation were assessed by MTS test and DNA quantification. The chondrogenic differentiation of GBMCs was evaluated measuring the glucosaminoglycans synthesis. Data showed that GBMCs were able to adhere, proliferate and osteogenic differentiation was evaluated by alkaline phosphatase activity and immunocytochemistry assays after 14 days in osteogenic medium and into chondrocytes after 21 days in culture with chondrogenic medium. The obtained results concerning the physicochemical and biological properties of the developed HA/CS bilayered scaffolds, show that these constructs exhibit great potential for their use in TE strategies leading to the formation of adequate tissue substitutes for the regeneration of osteochondral defects

    Prenatal diagnosis of mosaic ring chromosome 16 - a rare event with uncertain prognosis

    Ring chromosomes are rare cytogenetic findings (prenatal frequency ~ 0.0075%) often associated with an abnormal phenotype, depending of the chromosomal origin, genetic content and the presence of a mosaic. Supernumerary ring chromosome 16 [r(16)] is rarely observed and mosaicism makes the genotype/phenotype correlation difficult. We report a de novo mosaic r(16) detected after prenatal diagnosis in a woman referred for advanced maternal age. Multiplex ligation-dependent probe amplification (MLPA) for aneuploidy testing of chromosomes 13, 18, 21 and X was normal. Karyotype was 47,XX,+r[10]/46,XX[15]. Chromosomal microarray analysis (CMA) on DNA obtained from long-term cultured amniocytes did not detect any alterations. MLPA with a pericentromeric probe kit on an uncultured sample showed a chromosome 16 gain, encompassing 16p11.2 and 16q11.2 regions, including TGFB1I1, AHSP, VPS35 and ORC6 genes, leading to partial characterization of the r(16). Although no phenotype has been correlated with overexpression of these genes, the 16p11.2 region is associated with neurodevelopmental disorders. Nevertheless individuals with microduplication of 16p11.2 and normal development have been described. The lack of a precise definition of genetic content of the r(16) and its mosaic form leads to uncertain prognosis of clinical outcome.N/

    Dynamics and Excitation of Radio Galaxy Emission-Line Regions - I. PKS 2356-61

    Results are presented from a programme of detailed longslit spectroscopic observations of the extended emission-line region (EELR) associated with the powerful radio galaxy PKS 2356-61. The observations have been used to construct spectroscopic datacubes, which yield detailed information on the spatial variations of emission-line ratios across the EELR, together with its kinematic structure. We present an extensive comparison between the data and results obtained from the MAPPINGS II shock ionization code, and show that the physical properties of the line-emitting gas, including its ionization, excitation, dynamics and overall energy budget, are entirely consistent with a scenario involving auto-ionizing shocks as the dominant ionization mechanism. This has the advantage of accounting for the observed EELR properties by means of a single physical process, thereby requiring less free parameters than the alternative scheme involving photoionization by radiation from the active nucleus. Finally, possible mechanisms of shock formation are considered in the context of the dynamics and origin of the gas, specifically scenarios involving infall or accretion of gas during an interaction between the host radio galaxy and a companion galaxy.Comment: 35 pages, LaTeX, uses aas2pp4.sty file, includes 9 PostScript figures. Therefore, reducing SB or breaking up prolonged periods of SB improves functional fitness, food consumption, job satisfaction, and productivity. Reducing SB can be achieved by introducing a health-enhancing contextual modification promoted by a sit-stand desk in the workplace. The primary goal will be to test the effectiveness of this intervention in reducing and breaking up SB, while improving health outcomes in office-based workers during a 6-month intervention. Methods: A two-arm (1:1), superiority parallel-group cluster RCT will be conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of this intervention in a sample of office-based workers from a university in Portugal. The intervention will consist of a psychoeducation session, motivational prompts, and contextual modification promoted by a sit-stand desk in the workplace for 6 months. The control group will work as usual in their workplace, with no contextual change or prompts during the 6-month intervention. Three assessment points will be conducted in both groups, pre-intervention (baseline), post-intervention, and a 3-month follow-up. The primary outcomes include sedentary and physical activity-related variables, which will be objectively assessed with 24 h monitoring using the ActivPAL for 7 days. The secondary outcomes include (a) biometric indices as body composition, body mass index, waist circumference, and postural inequalities; and (b) psychosocial variables such as overall and work-related fatigue, overall discomfort, life/work satisfaction, quality of life, and eating behavior. Both the primary and secondary outcomes will be assessed at each assessment point. Discussion: This study will lean on the use of a sit-stand workstation for 6 months, prompted by an initial psychoeducational session and ongoing motivational prompts. We will aim to contribute to this topic by providing robust data on alternating sitting and standing postures in the workplace.
