    A Historical Review of Diachrony and Semantic Dimensions of Trace in Neurosciences and Lacanian Psychoanalysis.

    Experience leaves a trace in the nervous system through plasticity. However, the exact meaning of the mnesic trace is poorly defined in current literature. This article provides a historical review of the term trace in neuroscience and psychoanalysis literature, to highlight two relevant aspects: the diachronic and the semantic dimensions. There has been a general interest in diachrony, or a form of evolution of the trace, but its indissociable semantic dimension remains partially disregarded. Although frequently implied, the diachronic and semantic dimensions of the trace are rarely clearly articulated. We situate this discussion into the classical opposition of syntax, or rules of inscription of the trace in the nervous system, and semantics, or the content of the trace, which takes into consideration the attempt of the human being to build coherence. A general observation is that the study of the term trace follows trends of the thought of the given epoch. This historical analysis also reveals the decay of the idea that the trace is reliable to the experience. From the articulation between neurosciences and psychoanalysis in a historical perspective, this review shows that the trend is to consider trace as a production of the subject, resulting in a permanent rewriting in an attempt to give meaning to the experience. This trend is becoming increasingly evident in light of recent research in neurosciences and psychoanalysis

    Ferrimagnetism of the magnetoelectric compound Cu2_2OSeO3_3 probed by 77^{77}Se NMR

    We present a thorough 77^{77}Se NMR study of a single crystal of the magnetoelectric compound Cu2_2OSeO3_3. The temperature dependence of the local electronic moments extracted from the NMR data is fully consistent with a magnetic phase transition from the high-T paramagnetic phase to a low-T ferrimagnetic state with 3/4 of the Cu2+^{2+} ions aligned parallel and 1/4 aligned antiparallel to the applied field of 14.09 T. The transition to this 3up-1down magnetic state is not accompanied by any splitting of the NMR lines or any abrupt modification in their broadening, hence there is no observable reduction of the crystalline symmetry from its high-T cubic \textit{P}21_13 space group. These results are in agreement with high resolution x-ray diffraction and magnetization data on powder samples reported previously by Bos {\it et al.} [Phys. Rev. B, {\bf 78}, 094416 (2008)]. We also develop a mean field theory description of the problem based on a microscopic spin Hamiltonian with one antiferromagnetic (Jafm68J_\text{afm}\simeq 68 K) and one ferromagnetic (Jfm50J_\text{fm}\simeq -50 K) nearest-neighbor exchange interaction

    Embodied memory: unconscious smiling modulates emotional evaluation of episodic memories.

    Since Damasio introduced the somatic markers hypothesis in Damasio (1994), it has spread through the psychological community, where it is now commonly acknowledged that somatic states are a factor in producing the qualitative dimension of our experiences. Present actions are emotionally guided by those somatic states that were previously activated in similar experiences. In this model, somatic markers serve as a kind of embodied memory. Here, we test whether the manipulation of somatic markers can modulate the emotional evaluation of negative memories. Because facial feedback has been shown to be a powerful means of modifying emotional judgements, we used it to manipulate somatic markers. Participants first read a sad story in order to induce a negative emotional memory and then were asked to rate their emotions and memory about the text. Twenty-four hours later, the same participants were asked to assume a predetermined facial feedback (smiling) while reactivating their memory of the sad story. The participants were once again asked to fill in emotional and memory questionnaires about the text. Our results showed that participants who had smiled during memory reactivation later rated the text less negatively than control participants. However, the contraction of the zygomaticus muscles during memory reactivation did not have any impact on episodic memory scores. This suggests that manipulating somatic states modified emotional memory without affecting episodic memory. Thus, modulating memories through bodily states might pave the way to studying memory as an embodied function and help shape new kinds of psychotherapeutic interventions

    The phase transition in the localized ferromagnet EuO probed by muSR

    We report results of muon spin rotation measurements performed on the ferromagnetic semiconductor EuO, which is one of the best approximations to a localized ferromagnet. We argue that implanted muons are sensitive to the internal field primarily through a combination of hyperfine and Lorentz fields. The temperature dependences of the internal field and the relaxation rate have been measured and are compared with previous theoretical predictions.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

    Spin-dependent charge transfer at chiral electrodes probed by magnetic resonance

    Chirality-induced spin selectivity is evidenced by exciting the spin resonance of radicals in an electrochemical cell where the working electrode is covered with a chiral self-assembled monolayer. Because the electron transfer to and from the paramagnetic radical is spin dependent, the electrochemical current changes at resonance. This electrically-detected magnetic resonance (EDMR) is monitored by a lock-in detection based on electrode voltage modulation, at a frequency that optimizes the sensitivity of the differential conductance to the electrode charge transfer process. The method is validated using p-doped GaAs electrodes in which the conduction band electrons are hyperpolarized by a well-known method of optical spin pumping with circularly polarized light. Gold electrodes covered with peptides consisting of 5 alanine groups (Al5) present a relative current change of up to 5 × 10-5 when the resonance condition is met, corresponding to a spin filtering efficiency between 6 and 19%

    Spin-polarized oxygen hole states in cation deficient La(1-x)CaxMnO(3+delta)

    When holes are doped into a Mott-Hubbard type insulator, like lightly doped manganites of the La(1-x)CaxMnO3 family, the cooperative Jahn-Teller distortions and the appearance of orbital ordering require an arrangement of Mn(3+)/Mn(4+) for the establishment of the insulating canted antiferromagnetic (for x<=0.1), or of the insulating ferromagnetic (for 0.1<x<= 0.2) ground state. In the present work we provide NMR evidence about a novel and at the same time puzzling effect in La(1-x)CaxMnO(3+delta) systems with cation deficience. We show that in the low Ca-doping regime, these systems exhibit a very strong hyperfine field at certain La nuclear sites, which is not present in the stoichiometric compounds. Comparison of our NMR results with recent x-ray absorption data at the Mn K edge, suggests the formation of a spin-polarized hole arrangement on the 2p oxygen orbitals as the origin of this effect.Comment: 10 pages, 4 Figures, submitted to PR

    The Epistemological Foundations of Freud's Energetics Model.

    This article aims to clarify the epistemological foundations of the Freudian energetics model, starting with a historical review of the 19th century scientific context in which Freud's research lay down its roots. Beyond the physiological and anatomical references of &lt;i&gt;Project for a Scientific Psychology&lt;/i&gt; (Freud, 1895a), the physiology Freud makes reference to is in reality primarily anchored in an epistemological model derived from physics. Whilst across the Rhine, the autonomy of physiology in relation to physics was far from being accomplished, as a counterpoint, in France, the revolution in physiology driven by Claude Bernard established itself autonomously from physics,. In contrast, Freud's scientific landscape is entirely dominated by the physics elevated to the rank of an ideal science. The influence of Helmholtz, who is both a medical doctor and a physicist, has a determining influence on Freud's training. The discoveries in physics at that time, in particular the formulation of the principle of 'conservation of force' - first principle of thermodynamics - will constitute the points of reference upon which Freud will elaborate his energetics model, then subsequently, the idea of economy in his metapsychology. In this way we can trace both the historic and epistemological path that led Freud from a concept based on physics, and more specifically thermodynamic energy, to an idea of nervous energy that constitutes the basis of the concept of "quantity" as it is stated as 'first fundamental idea' in &lt;i&gt;Project for a Scientific Psychology&lt;/i&gt; (Freud, 1895a). This notion will subsequently evolve, and lead Freud to the introduction of the concept of 'psychical energy,' this time in a purely metapsychological sense

    The interplay between prematurity, maternal stress and children's intelligence quotient at age 11: A longitudinal study.

    Very premature children (&lt;33 weeks of gestational age (GA)) experience greater academic difficulties and have lower, though normal-range, intelligence quotients (IQs) versus their full-term peers. These differences are often attributed to GA or familial socio-economic status (SES). However, additional factors are increasingly recognized as likely contributors. Parental stress after a child's premature birth can present as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms and can in turn reinforce difficulties in parent-child interaction pattern. Following a longitudinal design, we studied the interplay between a premature child's perinatal history and maternal PTSD symptoms on intelligence abilities assessed at 11 years of age. Thirty-three very preterm and 21 full-term mother-children dyads partook in the study. Children's perinatal risk was evaluated at hospital discharge, maternal PTSD symptoms were assessed when the children were 18 months old, and children's IQ was measured at 11 years old. IQ was significantly lower for preterm than full-term children, without reliable influences from perinatal risk scores. However, lower maternal PTSD symptoms predicted higher IQ in preterm children. This preliminary study highlights the importance detecting maternal PTSD symptoms after a preterm birth and suggests interventions should target reducing maternal PTSD symptoms during early childhood to enhance very preterm children's intelligence development

    Spin accumulation induced resistance in mesoscopic ferromagnet/ superconductor junctions

    We present a description of spin-polarized transport in mesoscopic ferromagnet-superconductor (F/S) systems, where the transport is diffusive, and the interfaces are transparent. It is shown that the spin reversal associated with Andreev reflection generates an excess spin density close to the F/S interface, which leads to a spin contact resistance. Expressions for the contact resistance are given for two terminal and four terminal geometries.     Gauge Field Formulation of Adiabatic Spin Torques

    Previous calculation of spin torques for small-amplitude magnetization dynamics around a uniformly magnetized state [J. Phys. Soc. Jpn. {\bf 75} (2006) 113706] is extended here to the case of finite-amplitude dynamics. This is achieved by introducing an `` adiabatic'' spin frame for conduction electrons, and the associated SU(2) gauge field. In particular, the Gilbert damping is shown to arise from the time variation of the spin-relaxation source terms in this new frame, giving a new physical picture of the damping. The present method will allow a `` first-principle'' derivation of spin torques without any assumptions such as rotational symmetry in spin space.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
