Longitudinal relationships between caloric expenditure and gray matter in the cardiovascular health study
Background: Physical activity (PA) can be neuroprotective and reduce the risk for Alzheimerâs disease (AD). In assessing physical activity, caloric expenditure is a proxy marker reflecting the sum total of multiple physical activity types conducted by an individual. Objective:To assess caloric expenditure, as a proxy marker of PA, as a predictive measure of gray matter (GM) volumes in the normal and cognitively impaired elderly persons. Methods: All subjects in this study were recruited from the Institutional Review Board approved Cardiovascular Health Study (CHS), a multisite population-based longitudinal study in persons aged 65 and older. We analyzed a sub-sample of CHS participants 876 subjects (mean age 78.3, 57.5% F, 42.5% M) who had i) energy output assessed as kilocalories (kcal) per week using the standardized Minnesota Leisure-Time Activities questionnaire, ii) cognitive assessments for clinical classification of normal cognition, mild cognitive impairment (MCI), and AD, and iii) volumetric MR imaging of the brain. Voxel-based morphometry modeled the relationship between kcal/week and GM volumes while accounting for standard covariates including head size, age, sex, white matter hyperintensity lesions, MCI or AD status, and site. Multiple comparisons were controlled using a False Discovery Rate of 5 percent. Results: Higher energy output, from a variety of physical activity types, was associated with larger GM volumes in frontal, temporal, and parietal lobes, as well as hippocampus, thalamus, and basal ganglia. High levels of caloric expenditure moderated neurodegeneration-associated volume loss in the precuneus, posterior cingulate, and cerebellar vermis. Conclusion:Increasing energy output from a variety of physical activities is related to larger gray matter volumes in the elderly, regardless of cognitive status.Cyrus A. Raji, David A. The landscape of gifted and talented education in England and Wales: How are teachers implementing policy?

A questionnaire survey which invited both closed and open-ended responses was carried out with a national sample of primary schools. The survey indicated an increasing proportion of coordinators, compared with a survey carried out in 1996, were identifying their gifted and talented children as well as having associated school policies. However, the survey also highlighted a number of issues which need addressing if the initiative is to achieve its objective of providing the best possible educational opportunities for children. For example, it was found that a significant number of practitioners were not aware of the existence of the National Quality Standards for gifted and talented education, provided by the UK government in 2007, and the subject-specific criteria provided by the UKâs Curriculum Authority for identification and provision have been largely ignored. The process of identifying children to be placed on the âgifted and talentedâ register seems haphazard and based on pragmatic reasons. Analysis of teachersâ responses also revealed a range of views and theoretical positioning held by them, which have implications for classroom practice. As the âgifted and talentedâ initiative in the UK is entering a second decade, and yet more significant changes in policy are introduced, pertinent questions need to be raised and given consideration
Nurturing the young shoots of talent: Using action research for exploration and theory building
This is an Author's Accepted Manuscript of an article published in European Early Childhood Education Research Journal, 19(4), 433-450, 2011, copyright Taylor & Francis, available online at: http://www.tandfonline.com/10.1080/1350293X.2011.623515.This paper reports the outcomes of a set of action research projects carried out by teacher researchers in 14 local education authorities in England, working collaboratively with university tutors, over a period of three years. The common aim of all the projects was to explore practical ways of nurturing the gifts and talents of children aged fourâseven years. The project was funded by the Department of Education and Skills in England as part of the government's gifted and talented programme. The project teachers felt that their understanding of issues relating to nurturing the gifts and talents of younger children was enhanced through their engagement in the project. It was possible to map the findings of the projects to the English government's National Quality Standards for gifted and talented education which include: (1) identification; (2) effective provision in the classroom; (3) enabling curriculum entitlement and choice; (4) assessment for learning; (5) engaging with community, families and beyond. The findings are also analysed within the framework of good practice in educating children in the first years of schooling. Participating practitioners felt that action research offered them a suitable methodology to explore the complexity of the topic of giftedness through cycles of planning, action and reflection and personal theory building
Role of carbonate burial in Blue Carbon budgets
Calcium carbonates (CaCO3) often accumulate in mangrove and seagrass sediments. As CaCO3 production emits CO2, there is concern that this may partially offset the role of Blue Carbon ecosystems as CO2sinks through the burial of organic carbon (Corg). A global collection of data on inorganic carbon burial rates (Cinorg, 12% of CaCO3 mass) revealed global rates of 0.8âTgCinorgâyrâ1 and 15â62âTgCinorgâyrâ1 in mangrove and seagrass ecosystems, respectively. In seagrass, CaCO3burial may correspond to an offset of 30% of the net CO2 sequestration. However, a mass balance assessment highlights that the Cinorg burial is mainly supported by inputs from adjacent ecosystems rather than by local calcification, and that Blue Carbon ecosystems are sites of net CaCO3 dissolution. Hence, CaCO3 burial in Blue Carbon ecosystems contribute to seabed elevation and therefore buffers sea-level rise, without undermining their role as CO2 sinks
An Evolutionary Reduction Principle for Mutation Rates at Multiple Loci
A model of mutation rate evolution for multiple loci under arbitrary
selection is analyzed. Results are obtained using techniques from Karlin (1982)
that overcome the weak selection constraints needed for tractability in prior
studies of multilocus event models. A multivariate form of the reduction
principle is found: reduction results at individual loci combine topologically
to produce a surface of mutation rate alterations that are neutral for a new
modifier allele. New mutation rates survive if and only if they fall below this
surface - a generalization of the hyperplane found by Zhivotovsky et al. (1994)
for a multilocus recombination modifier. Increases in mutation rates at some
loci may evolve if compensated for by decreases at other loci. The strength of
selection on the modifier scales in proportion to the number of germline cell
divisions, and increases with the number of loci affected. Loci that do not
make a difference to marginal fitnesses at equilibrium are not subject to the
reduction principle, and under fine tuning of mutation rates would be expected
to have higher mutation rates than loci in mutation-selection balance. Other
results include the nonexistence of 'viability analogous, Hardy-Weinberg'
modifier polymorphisms under multiplicative mutation, and the sufficiency of
average transmission rates to encapsulate the effect of modifier polymorphisms
on the transmission of loci under selection. A conjecture is offered regarding
situations, like recombination in the presence of mutation, that exhibit
departures from the reduction principle. Constraints for tractability are:
tight linkage of all loci, initial fixation at the modifier locus, and mutation

Virus Replication as a Phenotypic Version of Polynucleotide Evolution
In this paper we revisit and adapt to viral evolution an approach based on
the theory of branching process advanced by Demetrius, Schuster and Sigmund
("Polynucleotide evolution and branching processes", Bull. Math. Biol. 46
(1985) 239-262), in their study of polynucleotide evolution. By taking into
account beneficial effects we obtain a non-trivial multivariate generalization
of their single-type branching process model. Perturbative techniques allows us
to obtain analytical asymptotic expressions for the main global parameters of
the model which lead to the following rigorous results: (i) a new criterion for
"no sure extinction", (ii) a generalization and proof, for this particular
class of models, of the lethal mutagenesis criterion proposed by Bull,
Sanju\'an and Wilke ("Theory of lethal mutagenesis for viruses", J. Virology 18
(2007) 2930-2939), (iii) a new proposal for the notion of relaxation time with
a quantitative prescription for its evaluation, (iv) the quantitative
description of the evolution of the expected values in in four distinct
"stages": extinction threshold, lethal mutagenesis, stationary "equilibrium"
and transient. Finally, based on these quantitative results we are able to draw

Infection-related morbidity and mortality among older patients with DLBCL treated with full- or attenuated-dose R-CHOP
Infection-related morbidity and mortality are increased in older patients with diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) compared with population-matched controls. Key predictive factors for infection-related hospitalization during treatment with rituximab plus cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, vincristine, and prednisone (R-CHOP) and deaths as a result of infection in older patients during and after treatment with R-CHOP remain incompletely understood. For this study, 690 consecutively treated patients age 70 years or older who received full-dose or attenuated-dose R-CHOP treatment were analyzed for risk of infection-related hospitalization and infection-related death. Median age was 77 years, and 34.4% were 80 years old or older. Median follow-up was 2.8 years (range, 0.4-8.9 years). Patient and baseline disease characteristics were assessed in addition to intended dose intensity (IDI). Of all patients, 72% were not hospitalized with infection. In 331 patients receiving an IDI â„80%, 33% were hospitalized with â„1 infections compared with 23.3% of 355 patients receiving an IDI of 80% across the whole cohort. Primary quinolone prophylaxis independently reduced infection-related admission. A total of 51 patients died as a result of infection. The 6-month, 12-month, 2-year, and 5-year cumulative incidences of infection-related death were 3.3%, 5.0%, 7.2%, and 11.1%, respectively. Key independent factors associated with infection-related death were an International Prognostic Index (IPI) score of 3 to 5, Cumulative Illness Rating Scale for Geriatrics (CIRS-G) score â„6, and low albumin, which enabled us to generate a predictive risk score. We defined a smaller group (15%) of patients (IPI score of 0-2, albumin >36 g/L, CIRS-G score <6) in which no cases of infection-related deaths occurred at 5 years of follow-up. Whether patients at higher risk of infection-related death could be targeted with enhanced antimicrobial prophylaxis remains unknown and will require a randomized trial
