    Long-range potentials and (n−1)d+ns(n-1)d+ns molecular resonances in an ultracold rydberg gas

    We have calculated long-range molecular potentials of the 0g+0_g^{+}, 0u−0_u^{-} and 1u1_u symmetries between highly-excited rubidium atoms. Strong np+npnp+np potentials characterized by these symmetries are important in describing interaction-induced phenomena in the excitation spectra of high npnp Rydberg states. Long-range molecular resonances are such phenomena and they were first reported in S.M. Farooqi {\it et al.}, Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 91} 183002. One class of these resonances occurs at energies corresponding to excited atom pairs (n−1)d+ns(n-1)d+ns. Such resonances are attributed to ℓ\ell-mixing due to Rydberg-Rydberg interactions so that otherwise forbidden molecular transitions become allowed. We calculate molecular potentials in Hund's case (c), use them to find the resonance lineshape and compare to experimental results.Comment: 11 pages, 7 figure

    Target population involvement in urban ciclovias: a preliminary evaluation of St. Louis Open Streets

    Ciclovias are active street events when roads are open to walkers, cyclists, and families and closed to automobiles. Over 70 cities in the USA have implemented ciclovias to promote physical activity. The authors evaluated four events during 2010 to determine what activities participants perform and who is attending. For two ciclovia events in St. Louis, Missouri, observation reports of activities, gender, and age of 1,452 participants were collected, and 82 adults were interviewed via direct approach. The survey covered six domains: physical activity, travel to event, sense of community, marketing, economic impact, and demographics. Each event occurred within the city, along multiple streets. Domains were selected from Ciclovia Recreativa developed by Ciclovia Bogota, Pan American Health Organization, and CDC. Additional questions addressed city-specific goals and matched similar evaluations in other cities.Over 50%of participants met CDC-defined weekly minute thresholds for physical activity. Participants, primarily (980 %) middle class, college educated, and white, were not representative of the majority minority city population, which has high rates of poverty, and low percentage of college graduates. Cities must work with residents to increase low-income minority population participation in ciclovia-based physical activity

    At A Glance summarizes the findings of service learning research in higher education over the past few years and includes a bibliography. It is designed to provide a quick overview of where we are in the field today and a map to the literature. Particular issues of interest may be explored in greater depth through the annotated bibliography and complete review of research for this period from 1993-99. This survey of service-learning research within higher education reflects a dramatic increase over recent years that examine the effects of service-learning on students, faculty, institutions, and communities. The scope of this literature review includes national, regional and single studies that focus on personal, learning, social, institutional, community or career developmental outcomes, as well as how program characteristics affect these outcomes. The initial literature search focused on research indexes such as ERIC and Psych Lit. Four descriptors guided these literature searches: service learning, community service and experiential learning, and field- based education. Special attention was paid to The Michigan Journal of Community Service Learning because this peer review journal has become a significant outlet for service-learning research in higher education. Summary reports from service-learning organizations were included such as RAND, Learn and Serve America, the Bonner Scholars Program, the American Association of Community Colleges, and the National Association of State Universities and Land Grant Colleges

    Kinetic modelling and molecular dynamics simulation of ultracold neutral plasmas including ionic correlations

    A kinetic approach for the evolution of ultracold neutral plasmas including interionic correlations and the treatment of ionization/excitation and recombination/deexcitation by rate equations is described in detail. To assess the reliability of the approximations inherent in the kinetic model, we have developed a hybrid molecular dynamics method. Comparison of the results reveals that the kinetic model describes the atomic and ionic observables of the ultracold plasma surprisingly well, confirming our earlier findings concerning the role of ion-ion correlations [Phys. Rev. A {\bf 68}, 010703]. In addition, the molecular dynamics approach allows one to study the relaxation of the ionic plasma component towards thermodynamical equilibrium
