An investigation was conducted on whether or not fanners training affects their adoption of improved farmpractices in Agriculture. Two hundred farmers were randomly selected from 10 Local Government Areas of Ondo State and made to respond to the interview schedule used in eliciting responses for the study. The paper examined how micro credit, in conjunction with effective communication system, could he used to alleviate poverty among women in a democratic and deregulated economy. A total of two hundred and twentyfive respondents who benefitedfrom Country Women Association ofNigeria (COWAN), credit scheme were interviewedfor the study. The respondents were randomly selected from 16 Local Government Areas in which COWAN operates. The study reveals that the loans grantedby COWANrangedfrom #500,00- #40,000.00 with a mean of#10,000.00. It also reveals that the loans were grantedmainlyforfoodcropproduction- maize, rice, cassava andyam, as well asforfarmproduce marketing. The study shows that 73.3 percent of the respondents had access to such information through COWAN programmes, conductedby extension officers as resourcepersons, 22.7percent through radio and24.9percent through television programmes. About 67 percent of the respondents show that, the information helped to improve their productivity. Furthermore, the study reveals that, farm size offood crop increased with loan. The meanfarm size rose from 0.6-0.82 hectares after loan, means offarm sizefor maize, rice and cassava production increased with loan. The study shows that, there was a significant difference between quantity offood crops produced before loan and after obtaining loan. The t-test also shows a significant difference between income of women before and after procuring the loan. It shows that, if more credits are made available to womenfolk with effective extension communication system, theirproduction willfully be enhancedandthe cumulative effect which will reduce or alleviatepoverty among them

ABSTRACT The study on assessment of extension media among youth farmers was carried out in Oyo and Ondo States of Nigeria . Data were obtained from 48 youth farmers and 24 extension agents from one zone of the ADP per state. The youth farmers were purposively sampled for having participated in extension media training at one time or the other, or their parent being contact farmers. Structured and validated questionnaires were used to elicit necessary information coupled with personal interview. The data were analyzed using frequencies, percentages and correlation co-efficient. The respondents were 30 years and below with the modal group being 16 -20years. The respondents were educated only 25percent were without formal education. Majority of them (67.5%) got innovation disseminated through television. Over 80 percent were aware of extension media in the study areas while only 20percent were not aware. Technologies disseminated include agricultural mechanization, improved seed production, mixed farming, and fertilizer application among others. The channels that were popular among the respondents include: radio and personal contact (53.7%) each. While demonstration was popular among the extension agents. There was negative correlation between age of respondents and diffusion of innovation. All the variables fitted were significant with exception of farm size. Based on the findings, the following recommendations were proffered: Government should make provisions for creating extension service departments in agricultural establishment where they do not exist

Overweight in young males reduces in a half the normal pregnancy success in rabbit model

[EN] Semen quality has certainly declined over the past few decades, possibly owing to modern lifestyle factors. In this sense, the role of overweight and obesity in the development of subfertility in males has generated a considerable amount of interest in recent years. However, there is no consensus on whether overweight or obesity impaired sperm quality. Thus, based on the ongoing debate about risk factors for subfertility associated with overweight and obesity in men, this study was designed to investigate the effect of overweight on sperm quality parameters and fertility success in randomized controlled trial in a rabbit model. Fourteen male rabbits were randomly assigned to a control group in which nutritional requirements were satisfied or a group fed to satiety from 12 to 32 weeks of age. At 24 weeks of age, semen samples were analysed weekly by conventional semen analysis for 8 weeks. In addition, during the trial female rabbits were artificially inseminated by each male to assess the fertility success and the number of offspring. Young males fed to satiety were associated with a significant increase in body weight (13.6% overweight) and perirenal fat thickness (5%). Male overweight presented a significant decrease in sperm concentration. There were no differences in the remaining sperm parameters. However, male overweight showed a clear and significant decrease in fertility success (control group, 64±8.9% versus fed to satiety group, 35±9.2%), but not in the number of offspring. Taken together, our findings provide new evidence on the loss of fertility induced by overweight in males. This research was supported by the projects: Spanish Research project AGL2014-5 3405-C2-1-P Comision Interministerial de Ciencia y Tecnologia (FMJ, JSV).
