An historical review of the experiences of Eastern Washington University African-American male athletes from the 1960\u27s to the 1970\u27s
This study provided an historical examination of experiences of Eastern Washington University African-American Athletes, as well as their Coaches, and Athletic Directors. The interviewees all attended Eastern during the 60\u27s and 70\u27s. Three African-American players, four coaches who coached them, and three Athletic Director\u27s were interviewed in the study. This study examines how African-American athletes at Eastern were influenced by other African-American athletes or leaders from the 60\u27s through the early 70\u27s. The study also investigates whether or not the Cheney Community was directly affected by these changes that occurred in the 60\u27s through the early 70\u27s. This study shows that Eastern Washington University was directly affected by the civil unrest that was occurring in the United States. This study also identified many protests which took place at Eastern, and one in particular a clinched fist incident that rivaled Tommie Smith\u27s and John Carlos clinched fist in the 1968 Olympic games in Mexico. There is evidence in this study that there were some racial tensions throughout the 60\u27s and 70\u27s, which Coaches, and Athletic Directors had to deal with
A parallel multistate framework for atomistic non-equilibrium reaction dynamics of solutes in strongly interacting organic solvents
We describe a parallel linear-scaling computational framework developed to
implement arbitrarily large multi-state empirical valence bond (MS-EVB)
calculations within CHARMM. Forces are obtained using the Hellman-Feynmann
relationship, giving continuous gradients, and excellent energy conservation.
Utilizing multi-dimensional Gaussian coupling elements fit to CCSD(T)-F12
electronic structure theory, we built a 64-state MS-EVB model designed to study
the F + CD3CN -> DF + CD2CN reaction in CD3CN solvent. This approach allows us
to build a reactive potential energy surface (PES) whose balanced accuracy and
efficiency considerably surpass what we could achieve otherwise. We use our PES
to run MD simulations, and examine a range of transient observables which
follow in the wake of reaction, including transient spectra of the DF
vibrational band, time dependent profiles of vibrationally excited DF in CD3CN
solvent, and relaxation rates for energy flow from DF into the solvent, all of
which agree well with experimental observations. Immediately following
deuterium abstraction, the nascent DF is in a non-equilibrium regime in two
different respects: (1) it is highly excited, with ~23 kcal mol-1 localized in
the stretch; and (2) not yet Hydrogen bonded to the CD3CN solvent, its
microsolvation environment is intermediate between the non-interacting
gas-phase limit and the solution-phase equilibrium limit. Vibrational
relaxation of the nascent DF results in a spectral blue shift, while relaxation
of its microsolvation environment results in a red shift. These two competing
effects result in a post-reaction relaxation profile distinct from that
observed when DF vibration excitation occurs within an equilibrium
microsolvation environment. The parallel software framework presented in this
paper should be more broadly applicable to a range of complex reactive systems.Comment: 58 pages and 29 Figure

"March, 1940""Missouri ranks as the leading state in the corn belt in the production of early spring lambs. A relatively short winter with sufficiently low temperatures to hold sheep parasites in check, and an early spring, make conditions nearly ideal for the production of February lambs. Pasture from bluegrass and the small grains (wheat, rye, barley and oats mixed with rape) supplies early spring grazing for ewes. A liberal milk flow as a result of good pasture enables February and March lambs to reach the late May and early June market. Zircon dissolution in a ductile shear zone, Monte Rosa granite gneiss, northern Italy
The sizes, distributions and shapes of zircon grains within variably deformed granite gneiss from the western Alps have been studied. Zircon shows numerous indicators of a metamorphic response in both the host gneiss and a 5 cm wide continuous ductile shear zone, within which the zircon grain sizes range from <1 µm to >50 µm. However, the very fine grain sizes are virtually absent from grain boundaries. Within this zone, zircons consistently have more rounded and embayed margins, which are interpreted as evidence of dissolution in response to fluid influx during shearing. Zircons are preferentially located near metamorphic muscovite in both the host gneiss and the shear zone and tend to show the poorest crystal shape, indicating that fluids linked to the formation and presence of muscovite may enhance both the crystallization of zircon and its subsequent dissolution. Larger zircon crystals typically show a brittle response to deformation when adjacent to phyllosilicates, with fractures consistently perpendicular to the (001) mica cleavage. The variety of metamorphic behaviour observed for zircon indicates that it may be highly reactive in sub-solidus mid-crustal metamorphic environments
