Quantum inequalities for the free Rarita-Schwinger fields in flat spacetime
Using the methods developed by Fewster and colleagues, we derive a quantum
inequality for the free massive spin- Rarita-Schwinger fields in
the four dimensional Minkowski spacetime. Our quantum inequality bound for the
Rarita-Schwinger fields is weaker, by a factor of 2, than that for the
spin- Dirac fields. This fact along with other quantum inequalities
obtained by various other authors for the fields of integer spin (bosonic
fields) using similar methods lead us to conjecture that, in the flat
spacetime, separately for bosonic and fermionic fields, the quantum inequality
bound gets weaker as the the number of degrees of freedom of the field
increases. A plausible physical reason might be that the more the number of
field degrees of freedom, the more freedom one has to create negative energy,
therefore, the weaker the quantum inequality bound.Comment: Revtex, 11 pages, to appear in PR
The Milky Way's Kiloparsec Scale Wind: A Hybrid Cosmic-Ray and Thermally Driven Outflow
We apply a wind model, driven by combined cosmic-ray and thermal-gas
pressure, to the Milky Way, and show that the observed Galactic diffuse soft
X-ray emission can be better explained by a wind than by previous static gas
models. We find that cosmic-ray pressure is essential to driving the observed
wind. Having thus defined a "best-fit" model for a Galactic wind, we explore
variations in the base parameters and show how the wind's properties vary with
changes in gas pressure, cosmic-ray pressure and density. We demonstrate the
importance of cosmic rays in launching winds, and the effect cosmic rays have
on wind dynamics. In addition, this model adds support to the hypothesis of
Breitschwerdt and collaborators that such a wind may help explain the
relatively small gradient observed in gamma-ray emission as a function of

Type IIb Supernova SN 2011dh: Spectra and Photometry from the Ultraviolet to the Near-Infrared
We report spectroscopic and photometric observations of the Type IIb SN
2011dh obtained between 4 and 34 days after the estimated date of explosion
(May 31.5 UT). The data cover a wide wavelength range from 2,000 Angstroms in
the UV to 2.4 microns in the NIR. Optical spectra provide line profiles and
velocity measurements of HI, HeI, CaII and FeII that trace the composition and
kinematics of the SN. NIR spectra show that helium is present in the atmosphere
as early as 11 days after the explosion. A UV spectrum obtained with the STIS
reveals that the UV flux for SN 2011dh is low compared to other SN IIb. The HI
and HeI velocities in SN 2011dh are separated by about 4,000 km/s at all
phases. We estimate that the H-shell of SN 2011dh is about 8 times less massive
than the shell of SN 1993J and about 3 times more massive than the shell of SN
2008ax. Light curves (LC) for twelve passbands are presented. The maximum
bolometric luminosity of erg s occurred
about 22 days after the explosion. NIR emission provides more than 30% of the
total bolometric flux at the beginning of our observations and increases to
nearly 50% of the total by day 34. The UV produces 16% of the total flux on day
4, 5% on day 9 and 1% on day 34. We compare the bolometric light curves of SN
2011dh, SN 2008ax and SN 1993J. The LC are very different for the first twelve
days after the explosions but all three SN IIb display similar peak
luminosities, times of peak, decline rates and colors after maximum. This
suggests that the progenitors of these SN IIb may have had similar compositions
and masses but they exploded inside hydrogen shells that that have a wide range
of masses. The detailed observations presented here will help evaluate
theoretical models for this supernova and lead to a better understanding of SN

Homophily and Contagion Are Generically Confounded in Observational Social Network Studies
We consider processes on social networks that can potentially involve three
factors: homophily, or the formation of social ties due to matching individual
traits; social contagion, also known as social influence; and the causal effect
of an individual's covariates on their behavior or other measurable responses.
We show that, generically, all of these are confounded with each other.
Distinguishing them from one another requires strong assumptions on the
parametrization of the social process or on the adequacy of the covariates used
(or both). In particular we demonstrate, with simple examples, that asymmetries
in regression coefficients cannot identify causal effects, and that very simple
models of imitation (a form of social contagion) can produce substantial
correlations between an individual's enduring traits and their choices, even
when there is no intrinsic affinity between them. We also suggest some possible

Photon polarization in radiative B decays
We study decay distributions in B -> K pi pi gamma, combining contributions
from several overlapping resonances in a K pi pi mass range near 1400 MeV,
(1^+) K_1(1400), (2^+) K^*_2(1430) and (1^-) K^*(1410). A method is proposed
for using these distributions to determine a photon polarization parameter in
the effective radiative weak Hamiltonian. This parameter is measured through an
up-down asymmetry of the photon direction relative to the K pi pi decay plane.
We calculate a dominant up-down asymmetry of 0.33 +- 0.05 from the K1(1400)
resonance, which can be measured with about 10^8 B B-bar pairs, thus providing
a new test for the Standard Model and a probe for some of its extensions.Comment: 22 pages, 3 figures, version to appear in Phys. Rev.
A Reduction in Adult Blood Stream Infection and Case Fatality at a Large African Hospital following Antiretroviral Therapy Roll-Out
Introduction
Blood-stream infection (BSI) is one of the principle determinants of the morbidity and mortality associated with advanced HIV infection, especially in sub-Saharan Africa. Over the last 10 years, there has been rapid roll-out of anti-retroviral therapy (ART) and cotrimoxazole prophylactic therapy (CPT) in many high HIV prevalence African countries.
Methods
A prospective cohort of adults with suspected BSI presenting to Queen's Hospital, Malawi was recruited between 2009 and 2010 to describe causes of and outcomes from BSI. Comparison was made with a cohort pre-dating ART roll-out to investigate whether and how ART and CPT have affected BSI. Malawian census and Ministry of Health ART data were used to estimate minimum incidence of BSI in Blantyre district.
Results
2,007 patients were recruited, 90% were HIV infected. Since 1997/8, culture-confirmed BSI has fallen from 16% of suspected cases to 10% (p<0.001) and case fatality rate from confirmed BSI has fallen from 40% to 14% (p<0.001). Minimum incidence of BSI was estimated at 0.03/1000 years in HIV uninfected vs. 2.16/1000 years in HIV infected adults. Compared to HIV seronegative patients, the estimated incidence rate-ratio for BSI was 80 (95% CI:46–139) in HIV-infected/untreated adults, 568 (95% CI:302–1069) during the first 3 months of ART and 30 (95% CI:16–59) after 3 months of ART.
Conclusions
Following ART roll-out, the incidence of BSI has fallen and clinical outcomes have improved markedly. Nonetheless, BSI incidence remains high in the first 3 months of ART despite CPT. Further interventions to reduce BSI-associated mortality in the first 3 months of ART require urgent evaluation

Indirect Search for Neutralino Dark Matter with High Energy Neutrinos
We investigate the prospects of indirect searches for supersymmetric
neutralino dark matter. Relic neutralinos gravitationally accumulate in the Sun
and their annihilations produce high energy neutrinos. Muon neutrinos of this
origin can be seen in large detectors like AMANDA, IceCube and ANTARES. We
evaluate the relic density and the detection rate in several models---the
minimal supersymmetric model, minimal supergravity, and supergravity with
non-universal Higgs boson masses at the grand unification scale. We make
realistic estimates for the indirect detection rates including effects of the
muon detection threshold, quark hadronization, and solar absorption. We find
good prospects for detection of neutralinos with mass above 200 GeV.Comment: 36 pages in REVTEX, 18 figure
