    Comparisons of the socio-behavioral differences between chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes) and bonobos (Pan paniscus), investigating the impact of a naturally occurring polymorphic microsatellite deletion in the 5’ flanking region of arginine vasopressin receptor 1a (AVPR1a) on gene expression and sociality within the Pan genus

    Among the great apes, chimpanzees are unique in having a polymorphic deletion of a ~350bp microsatellite containing region (DupB) in the 5’ flanking region of the arginine vasopressin receptor 1a (AVPR1a) gene. This results in three genotypes (DupB+/+, DupB+/- and DupB-/-) of AVPR1a in chimpanzees. Variations in the length of microsatellites 5’ of AVPR1a have been associated with social behaviors (pair-bonding, paternal care, degree of social interest) and differential levels of expression of AVPR1a in the brains of voles. The polymorphic DupB microsatellite in chimpanzees allows the investigation of microsatellite variation 5’ of AVPR1a in higher order primates. We hypothesized that chimpanzees lacking the DupB microsatellite would spend more time alone (in the absence of conspecific social partners) compared to chimpanzees that retain the ancestral genotype. Additionally we collected identical behavioral data on bonobos, who are not polymorphic for the deletion of this microsatellite in order to make comparisons within the Pan genus on sociality and the impact of a polymorphic deletion of the DupB microsatellite. Finally we conduced luciferase reporter assays in order to investigate the impact of the DupB microsatellite on gene expression. These data indicate that bonobos spend more time close to conspecifics and spend more time grooming, compared to chimpanzees. With respect to the DupB deletion and sociality, these data indicate that chimpanzees with a complete deletion of DupB are more likely to spend time “alone” than DupB+ individuals or bonobos

    The first 8-13 micron spectra of globular cluster red giants: circumstellar silicate dust grains in 47 Tucanae (NGC 104)

    We present 8-13 micron spectra of eight red giants in the globular cluster 47 Tucanae (NGC 104), obtained at the European Southern Observatory 3.6m telescope. These are the first mid-infrared spectra of metal-poor, low-mass stars. The spectrum of at least one of these, namely the extremely red, large-amplitude variable V1, shows direct evidence of circumstellar grains made of amorphous silicate.Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics, 5 page

    A Novel, Contactless, Portable “Spot-Check” Device Accurately Measures Respiratory Rate

    Respiratory rate (RR) is an important vital sign used in the assessment of acutely ill patients. It is also used as to predict serious deterioration in a patient's clinical condition. Convenient electronic devices exist for measurement of pulse, blood pressure, oxygen saturation and temperature. Although devices which measure RR exist, none has entered everyday clinical practice. We developed a contactless portable respiratory rate monitor (CPRM) and evaluated the agreement in respiratory rate measurements between existing methods and our new device. The CPRM uses thermal anemometry to measure breath signals during inspiration and expiration. RR data were collected from 52 healthy adult volunteers using respiratory inductance plethysmography (RIP) bands (established contact method), visual counting of chest movements (established non-contact method) and the CPRM (new method), simultaneously. Two differently shaped funnel attachments were evaluated for each volunteer. Data showed good agreement between measurements from the CPRM and the gold standard RIP, with intra-class correlation coefficient (ICC): 0.836, mean difference 0.46 and 95% limits of agreement of -5.90 to 6.83. When separate air inlet funnels of the CPRM were analysed, stronger agreement was seen with an elliptical air inlet; ICC 0.908, mean difference 0.37 with 95% limits of agreement -4.35 to 5.08. A contactless device for accurately and quickly measuring respiratory rate will be an important triage tool in the clinical assessment of patients. More testing is needed to explore the reasons for outlying measurements and to evaluate in the clinical setting

    The Neon Abundance in the Ejecta of QU Vul From Late-Epoch IR Spectra

    We present ground-based SpectroCam-10 mid-infrared, MMT optical, and Spitzer Space Telescope IRS mid-infrared spectra taken 7.62, 18.75, and 19.38 years respectively after the outburst of the old classical nova QU Vulpeculae (Nova Vul 1984 #2). The spectra of the ejecta are dominated by forbidden line emission from neon and oxygen. Our analysis shows that neon was, at the first and last epochs respectively, more than 76 and 168 times overabundant by number with respect to hydrogen compared to the solar value. These high lower limits to the neon abundance confirm that QU Vul involved a thermonuclear runaway on an ONeMg white dwarf and approach the yields predicted by models of the nucleosynthesis in such events.Comment: ApJ 2007 accepted, 18 pages, including 5 figures, 1 tabl

    Identification of Plasma Cells in Lung Alveoli and Interstitial Tissues After Localized Lung Immunization

    Large numbers of antibody‐forming cells (AFC) can be identified with the Jerne plaque assay in immunized lung lobes of the beagle dog after localized instillation of particulate antigen. Published data suggest that these AFC are secreting antibody and are responsible for increased levels of specific antibody in immunized lung lobes. If AFC in the lung are actively secreting antibody, there should be an increase in the number of mature plasma cells in lung lobes exposed to antigen. The purposes of this study were to evaluate the number of lymphoid cells present in immunized and control lung lobes and to determine if lung immunization produces a localized increase in the number of plasma cells. Sheep red blood cells (SRBC), autologous dog red blood cells, and saline were instilled into specific lung lobes of beagle dogs with the aid of a fiberoptic bronchoscope. Light and transmission electron microscopy studies of tissues from lung lobes instilled with SRBC showed perivascular infiltrates and intra‐alveolar accumulations of lymphoid cells which were not present in control lung lobes. The morphology of these lymphoid cells ranged from small lymphocytes through mature plasma cells. From 5% to 15% of the cells present in the interstitial tissues and alveoli of immunized lung lobes were plasma cells. These observations suggest that lymphoid cells which entered the SRBC immunized lung can mature to plasma cells which are probably responsible for the local production of antigen‐specific antibody.Peer Reviewedhttps://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/142186/1/jlb0001.pd
