A Critical Assessment of Theories of Strain Gradient Plasticity
Theories to extend plasticity to the micron scale have been in existence for over a decade, complemented by a growing body of experimental data. Here, materials and mechanics aspects of two prominent strain gradient theories of plasticity, due to Nix and Gao and to Fleck and Hutchinson, are assessed within the context of simple bending. Differences between the theories are highlighted. The theories predict different trends relative to the size dependence of initial yielding and rate of hardening. The dislocation mechanics underpinning the two theories is addressed. Distinctions between lower-order theories and higher-order theories are also drawn, emphasizing the flexibility of higher-order theories to solve problems for a wide range of boundary conditions, especially those where, locally, the dislocations are blocked (pile up) and the plastic strain is zero.Engineering and Applied Science
Antibiotics for trachoma.
BACKGROUND: Trachoma is the world's leading infectious cause of blindness. In 1997 the World Health Organization (WHO) launched an Alliance for the Global Elimination of Trachoma by the year 2020, based on the 'SAFE' strategy (surgery, antibiotics, facial cleanliness and environmental improvement). OBJECTIVES: To assess the evidence supporting the antibiotic arm of the SAFE strategy by assessing the effects of antibiotics on both active trachoma (primary objective) and on Chlamydia trachomatis (C. trachomatis) infection of the conjunctiva (secondary objective). SEARCH STRATEGY: We searched CENTRAL (which contains the Cochrane Eyes and Vision Group Trials Register) (The Cochrane Library 2010, Issue 11), MEDLINE (January 1950 to December 2010), EMBASE (January 1980 to December 2010), the metaRegister of Controlled Trials (mRCT) (www.controlled-trials.com) (December 2010) and ClinicalTrials.gov (www.clinicaltrials.gov) (December 2010). We used the Science Citation Index to look for articles that cited the included studies. We searched the reference lists of identified articles and we contacted authors and experts for details of further relevant studies. There were no language or date restrictions in the search for trials. The electronic databases were last searched on 12 December 2010. SELECTION CRITERIA: We included randomised trials that satisfied either of two criteria: (a) trials in which topical or oral administration of an antibiotic was compared to placebo or no treatment in people or communities with trachoma, (b) trials in which a topical antibiotic was compared with an oral antibiotic in people or communities with trachoma. A subdivision of particular interest was trials in which topical tetracycline or chlortetracycline and oral azithromycin were compared with each other, or in which one of these treatments was compared with placebo or no treatment, as these are the two WHO recommended antibiotics. We considered individually randomised and cluster-randomised trials separately. DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS: Two authors independently assessed trial quality and extracted data. We contacted investigators for missing data. Where appropriate, the effect estimates from the individual studies (risk ratios) were pooled using a random-effects model. MAIN RESULTS: A total of 14 trials randomised individuals with trachoma to oral antibiotic, topical antibiotic, both, or control (no treatment or placebo) and were eligible for inclusion in this review (n = 3587). Overall, the quality of the evidence provided from these trials was low. Nine of the trials compared antibiotic treatment to control. Most of the studies found a beneficial effect of treatment on active trachoma and ocular chlamydial infection at three and 12 months follow up. There was considerable clinical and statistical heterogeneity between trials, which meant that it was difficult to reliably estimate the size of the treatment effect. It is likely to be in the region of a 20% relative risk reduction. Seven of the 14 trials compared the effectiveness of oral and topical antibiotics. There was no consistent evidence as to whether oral or topical antibiotics were more effective, although one trial suggested that a single dose of oral azithromycin was significantly more effective than unsupervised use of topical tetracyclineA further eight trials assessed the effectiveness of community-based treatment. In five trials antibiotic treatment was compared to no (or delayed) treatment (57 communities), and in three trials oral antibiotic was compared to topical treatment (12 communities). The quality of the evidence provided by these trials was variable but at least one trial was considered to provide high quality evidence. There was evidence that community-based antibiotic treatment reduced the prevalence of active trachoma and ocular infection 12 months after single-dose treatment. There was some evidence that oral azithromycin was more effective than topical tetracycline as a community treatment. Data on adverse effects were not consistently reported however there were no reported serious adverse events associated with treatment with oral azithromycin or topical tetracycline; in one sample survey of 671 people treated with azithromycin between 10% and 15% experienced gastrointestinal adverse effects (nausea or vomiting, or both). AUTHORS' CONCLUSIONS: Antibiotic treatment reduces the risk of active trachoma and ocular chlamydial infection in people infected with C. trachomatis, but we do not know for certain the size of the treatment effect in individuals. A Stretch/Bend Method for In Situ Measurement of the Delamination Toughness of Coatings and Films Attached to Substrates
A stretch/bend method for the in situ measurement of the delamination toughness of coatings attached to substrates is described. A beam theory analysis is presented that illustrates the main features of the test. The analysis is general and allows for the presence of residual stress. It reveals that the test produces stable extension of delaminations, rendering it suitable for multiple measurements in a single test. It also provides scaling relations and enables estimates of the loads needed to extend delaminations. Finite element calculations reveal that the beam theory solutions are accurate for slender beams, but overestimate the energy release rate for stubbier configurations and short delaminations. The substantial influence of residual stress on the energy release rate and phase angle is highly dependent on parameters such as the thickness and modulus ratio for the two layers. Its effect must be included to obtain viable measurements of toughness. Understanding violence through social media
While social media analysis has been widely utilized to predict various market and political trends, its utilization to improve geospatial conflict prediction in contested environments remains understudied. To determine the feasibility of social media utilization in conflict prediction, we compared historical conflict data and social media metadata, utilizing over 829,537 geo-referenced messages sent through the Twitter network within Iraq from August 2013 to July 2014. From our research, we conclude that social media metadata has a positive impact on conflict prediction when compared with historical conflict data. Additionally, we find that utilizing the most extreme negative terminology from a locally derived social media lexicon provided the most significant predictive accuracy for determining areas that would experience subsequent violence. Early neuronal accumulation of DNA double strand breaks in Alzheimer's disease.
The maintenance of genomic integrity is essential for normal cellular functions. However, it is difficult to maintain over a lifetime in postmitotic cells such as neurons, in which DNA damage increases with age and is exacerbated by multiple neurological disorders, including Alzheimer's disease (AD). Here we used immunohistochemical staining to detect DNA double strand breaks (DSBs), the most severe form of DNA damage, in postmortem brain tissues from patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) or AD and from cognitively unimpaired controls. Immunostaining for γH2AX-a post-translational histone modification that is widely used as a marker of DSBs-revealed increased proportions of γH2AX-labeled neurons and astrocytes in the hippocampus and frontal cortex of MCI and AD patients, as compared to age-matched controls. In contrast to the focal pattern associated with DSBs, some neurons and glia in humans and mice showed diffuse pan-nuclear patterns of γH2AX immunoreactivity. In mouse brains and primary neuronal cultures, such pan-nuclear γH2AX labeling could be elicited by increasing neuronal activity. To assess whether pan-nuclear γH2AX represents DSBs, we used a recently developed technology, DNA damage in situ ligation followed by proximity ligation assay, to detect close associations between γH2AX sites and free DSB ends. This assay revealed no evidence of DSBs in neurons or astrocytes with prominent pan-nuclear γH2AX labeling. These findings suggest that focal, but not pan-nuclear, increases in γH2AX immunoreactivity are associated with DSBs in brain tissue and that these distinct patterns of γH2AX formation may have different causes and consequences. We conclude that AD is associated with an accumulation of DSBs in vulnerable neuronal and glial cell populations from early stages onward. Because of the severe adverse effects this type of DNA damage can have on gene expression, chromatin stability and cellular functions, DSBs could be an important causal driver of neurodegeneration and cognitive decline in this disease
Physical characteristics and non-keplerian orbital motion of "propeller" moons embedded in Saturn's rings
We report the discovery of several large "propeller" moons in the outer part
of Saturn's A ring, objects large enough to be followed over the 5-year
duration of the Cassini mission. These are the first objects ever discovered
that can be tracked as individual moons, but do not orbit in empty space. We
infer sizes up to 1--2 km for the unseen moonlets at the center of the
propeller-shaped structures, though many structural and photometric properties
of propeller structures remain unclear. Finally, we demonstrate that some
propellers undergo sustained non-keplerian orbit motion. (Note: This arXiv

Saliva urea nitrogen dipsticks to predict acute kidney injury in Malawian trauma patients
Background: Many low-resource settings have limited access to serum creatinine tests necessary for kidney disease identification. Among Malawian patients who are hospitalized after trauma, we evaluated the use of point-of-care saliva urea nitrogen (SUN) dipsticks to predict acute kidney injury (AKI).
Methods: In a nested prospective cohort study, we enrolled hospitalized acute trauma patients aged ≥6 months to evaluate AKI (defined by KDIGO criteria) and the test characteristics of SUN to predict AKI.
Results: Among 335 participants (approximately three-quarters able to expectorate and 34% aged ≤18 years), 12.5% (n = 42) developed AKI. At a SUN threshold of ≥40 mg/dL, a positive dipstick test was specific (99.3%) but insensitive (14.3%) in predicting AKI, with a positive predictive value of 75% and negative predictive value of 89%. At this threshold, 2.4% of participants were dipstick-positive (SUN+), and 75% of those had AKI. Reducing the SUN threshold to ≥30 mg/dL increased participants who were SUN+ to 5.0% (n = 16) but also increased the false positive rate and missed 79% (n = 33) of AKI cases. Stratified results showed better performance among adults than children and similar results when comparing participants who could and could not expectorate. There was moderate correlation between categorized BUN values and SUN (r = 0.53) but less agreement (weighted kappa 0.27; 95% CI 0.17–0.37).
Conclusions: SUN dipstick testing has good specificity and negative predictive value for ruling out AKI, but poor sensitivity. We found similar results among those who could or could not expectorate a saliva sample
Unusually High Thermal Conductivity of Carbon Nanotubes
Combining equilibrium and non-equilibrium molecular dynamics simulations with
accurate carbon potentials, we determine the thermal conductivity of
carbon nanotubes and its dependence on temperature. Our results suggest an
unusually high value ~W/mK for an isolated
(10,10) nanotube at room temperature, comparable to the thermal conductivity of
a hypothetical isolated graphene monolayer or diamond. Our results suggest that
these high values of are associated with the large phonon mean free
paths in these systems; substantially lower values are predicted and observed

Abundances of Neutron-Capture Elements in 62 Stars in the Globular Cluster Messier 15
M15 is a globular cluster with a known spread in neutron-capture elements.
This paper presents abundances of neutron-capture elements for 62 stars in M15.
Spectra were obtained with the Michigan/Magellan Fiber System (M2FS)
spectrograph, covering a wavelength range from ~4430-4630 A. Spectral lines
from Fe I, Fe II, Sr I, Zr II, Ba II, La II, Ce II, Nd II, Sm II, Eu II, and Dy
II, were measured, enabling classifications and neutron-capture abundance
patterns for the stars. Of the 62 targets, 44 are found to be highly
Eu-enhanced r-II stars, another 17 are moderately Eu-enhanced r-I stars, and
one star is found to have an s-process signature. The neutron-capture patterns
indicate that the majority of the stars are consistent with enrichment by the
r-process. The 62 target stars are found to show significant star-to-star
spreads in Sr, Zr, Ba, La, Ce, Nd, Sm, Eu, and Dy, but no significant spread in
Fe. The neutron-capture abundances are further found to have slight
correlations with sodium abundances from the literature, unlike what has been
previously found; follow-up studies are needed to verify this result. The
findings in this paper suggest that the Eu-enhanced stars in M15 were enhanced
by the same process, that the nucleosynthetic source of this Eu pollution was
the r-process, and that the r-process source occurred as the first generation

A 5-Enolpyruvylshikimate 3-Phosphate Synthase Functions as a Transcriptional Repressor in Populus.
Long-lived perennial plants, with distinctive habits of inter-annual growth, defense, and physiology, are of great economic and ecological importance. However, some biological mechanisms resulting from genome duplication and functional divergence of genes in these systems remain poorly studied. Here, we discovered an association between a poplar (Populus trichocarpa) 5-enolpyruvylshikimate 3-phosphate synthase gene (PtrEPSP) and lignin biosynthesis. Functional characterization of PtrEPSP revealed that this isoform possesses a helix-turn-helix motif in the N terminus and can function as a transcriptional repressor that regulates expression of genes in the phenylpropanoid pathway in addition to performing its canonical biosynthesis function in the shikimate pathway. We demonstrated that this isoform can localize in the nucleus and specifically binds to the promoter and represses the expression of a SLEEPER-like transcriptional regulator, which itself specifically binds to the promoter and represses the expression of PtrMYB021 (known as MYB46 in Arabidopsis thaliana), a master regulator of the phenylpropanoid pathway and lignin biosynthesis. Analyses of overexpression and RNAi lines targeting PtrEPSP confirmed the predicted changes in PtrMYB021 expression patterns. These results demonstrate that PtrEPSP in its regulatory form and PtrhAT form a transcriptional hierarchy regulating phenylpropanoid pathway and lignin biosynthesis in Populus
