    Neutral hydrogen and star formation in irregular galaxies

    The Very Large Array and WSTR H I synthesis observations of seven irregular galaxies are presented. The total H I images of four Local Group dwarf irregular galaxies and three larger more distant irregular galaxies are constructed at the identical resolution of 500 pc. When compared to H II region distributions derived from H alpha images, all galaxies studied show an excellent correlation between the H I surface density and the presence of H II regions. This correlation is most easily interpreted in terms of a requisite threshold H I surface density for massive star formation. This threshold is 1 x 10 to the 21st power H I atoms/sq cm for a resolution of 500 pc. Giant extragalactic H II regions are only found near H I surface densities of a factor of 3 to 5 times this threshold level. The observed threshold implies a Jeans length of 150 pc, which is the same as the size scale at which the structure in the H I complexes correlates well with the H II region distribution. This, combined with the fact that in none of the galaxies observed is there H I above the threshold level with concomitant H II regions, implies an exclusively gravitational origin for the star formation events. That is, there is no need to involve a trigger as in the SSPSF theory (Seiden 1983) or feedback as in Dopita (1985)

    The Progenitor Dependence of the Preexplosion Neutrino Emission in Core-Collapse Supernovae

    We perform spherically-symmetric general-relativistic simulations of core collapse and the postbounce preexplosion phase in 32 presupernova stellar models of solar metallicity with zero-age-main-sequence masses of 12 M_{sun} to 120 M_{sun}. Using energy-dependent three-species neutrino transport in the two-moment approximation with an analytic closure, we show that the emitted neutrino luminosities and spectra follow very systematic trends that are correlated with the compactness (~M/R) of the progenitor star's inner regions via the accretion rate in the preexplosion phase. We find that these qualitative trends depend only weakly on the nuclear equation of state, but quantitative observational statements will require independent constraints on the equation of state and the rotation rate of the core as well as a more complete understanding of neutrino oscillations. We investigate the simulated response of water Cherenkov detectors to the electron antineutrino fluxes from our models and find that the large statistics of a galactic core collapse event may allow robust conclusions on the inner structure of the progenitor star.Comment: 16 emulateapj pages, 10 figures, 1 table. matches published versio

    Generic Schemes for Single Molecule Kinetics 2: Information Content of the Poisson Indicator

    Recently, we described a pathway analysis technique (paper 1) for analyzing generic schemes for single-molecule kinetics based upon the first-passage time distribution. Here, we employ this method to derive expressions for the Poisson indicator, a measure of stochastic variation (essentially equivalent to the Fano factor and Mandel's Q parameter), for various renewal (memoryless) enzymatic reactions. We examine its dependence on substrate concentration, without assuming all steps follow Poissonian kinetics. Based upon fitting to the functional forms of the first two waiting time moments, we show that, to second order, the non-Poissonian kinetics are generally underdetermined but can be specified in certain scenarios. For an enzymatic reaction with an arbitrary intermediate topology, we identify a generic minimum of the Poisson indicator as a function of substrate concentration, which can be used to tune substrate concentration to the stochastic fluctuations and estimate the largest number of underlying consecutive links in a turnover cycle. We identify a local maximum of the Poisson indicator (with respect to substrate concentration) for a renewal process as a signature of competitive binding, either between a substrate and an inhibitor or between multiple substrates.     How robust are popular models of nominal frictions?

    This paper analyzes three popular models of nominal price and wage frictions to determine which best fits post-war U.S. data. We construct a dynamic stochastic general equilibrium (DSGE) model and use maximum likelihood to estimate each model's parameters. Because previous research finds that the conduct of monetary policy and the behavior of inflation changed in the early 1980s, we examine two distinct sample periods. Using a Bayesian, pseudo-odds measure as a means for comparison, a sticky price and wage model with dynamic indexation best fits the data in the early-sample period, whereas either a sticky price and wage model with static indexation or a sticky information model best fits the data in the late-sample period. Our results suggest that price- and wage-setting behavior may be sensitive to changes in the monetary policy regime.
