The Effect of a Special Interest Group on Apartment Price Collusion

    Get PDF
This paper examines the effect of collusion by a special interest group (Association of the Resident Housewives, ARH) in the apartment market between 2006 and 2007 in Korea. Using the Difference-In-Difference (DID) design and carefully matching the apartments, it is estimated that every instance of collusion results in an increase of from KRW 7.2 to 40.3 million in the apartment price. The amount of increase varies by districts and apartment unit characteristics. The result in this paper shows that the effects of collusion explain the cause of a rapid rise in the price of apartment between 2006 and 2007. This paper contributes to the collusion literature by closely examining how a special interest group (ARH) affects price through the collusion

Accurate measurement of fat mass has become increasingly important with the increasing incidence of obesity. We assessed fat and muscle mass of Koreans with the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey IV (KNHANES IV). We studied 10,456 subjects (aged 20 to 85 yr; 4,476 men, 5,980 women). Fat and muscle mass were measured by dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry. Reference values of body compositions were obtained using the LMS method. The fat mass index (FMI, body fat mass/height2; kg/m2) of Korean men did not correlate with age (P = 0.452), but those of Korean women (P < 0.001) did. The ratio of percentage of fat in the trunk and legs was positively related with age in both the genders. The appendicular lean mass/height2 (kg/m2) of Korean men was negatively related to age (P < 0.001). In women, this ratio increased with age (P < 0.001). When we defined obesity according to the FMI classification, the rates of obesity were 6.1% (FMI > 9 kg/m2) in men and 2.7% (FMI > 13 kg/m2) in women. It is concluded that the muscle mass decreases and obesity increases with aging in Korean men, whereas both fat mass and obesity increase with aging in Korean women

Gastroprotective effects of the isopropanol extract of Artemisia princeps and its gastroretentive floating tablets on gastric mucosal injury

In this study, we investigated the gastroprotective effect of an isopropanol extract from the aerial parts of Artemisia princeps (IPAP) and developed a gastroretentive floating tablet of IPAP (IPAP-FR) for maximized local gastroprotective effects. Pre-treatment with IPAP ameliorated the gastric mucosal hemorrhagic lesions in ethanol/HCl- or indomethacin-treated rats. IPAP decreased mucosal hemorrhage of gastric ulcers induced by ethanol or indomethacin plus pyloric ligation in rats. The optimized floating tablet, IPAP-FR, floated on medium surface with more sustained eupatilin release compared to the non-floating control tablet. X-ray photographs in beagle dogs showed that IPAP-FR was retained for >2 h in the stomach. In the ethanol-induced gastric ulcer rat model, the gastric hemorrhagic lesion was improved more substantially with IPAP-FR compared to the non-floating control tablet. Based on these data, our data suggest that IPAP-FR has an improved therapeutic potential for the treatment of gastric ulcer

AbstractWe developed the educational purpose mobile application, named “Wild Flowers of Bukhansan National Park (version 1.0)”, aiming for easy identification of wildflowers for students and visitors in the park. When visitors find a flower or part of plant in the park, visitors can search for its name utilizing the pictures and characters provided in their own smartphone mobile devices or tablet PCs. The application provides pictures of wildflowers in the park and character-based searching system based on 12 diagnostic features (e.g., growth form, leaf arrangement, flower symmetry, petal color, petal number, sepal number, etc). We adopted the complete floristic survey of Chung and Lee (1962) and added species that we confirmed their distribution in the park during the development of this application. In summary, number of vascular plants in this park was estimated to be 428 taxa including 100 families, 280 genera, 327 species, 1 subspecies, 50 varieties, and 5 formas. We provided a total of 588 pictures representing 358 taxa and each taxon includes multiple pictures in many cases. Included identification quizzes can be an efficient educational tool as well as fun activity for students and visitors who are learning plant species in Korea. Our next step will include GPS function in the application for indicating visitor's location and for providing previously reported sites of the species that we interested in the map of the park. The future application which includes GPS function will be a valuable tool for the monitoring of rare plants, plant researches related to the climate changes, etc. We currently provide Korean iPhone version only, and English version and both of android versions will be serviced soon

PECTINASE-MODIFIED RED GINSENG (GS-E3D) INHIBIT NF-ÎơB TRANSLOCATION AND NITRIC OXIDE PRODUCTION IN LIPOPOLYSACCHARIDE-STIMULATED RAW 264.7 CELLS

Objective: Red ginseng has been used as traditional medicines and functional foods in the world, because of its health benefits. The aim of this study was to elucidate the anti-inflammatory effect and mechanism of pectinase-modified red ginseng (GS-E3D) with a cellular model of lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated RAW264.7 cells. Methods: To study the anti-inflammatory effect of GS-E3D, the key inflammation mediators such as nitric oxide (NO),prostaglandin E2 (PGE2), inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), Cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), tumor necrosis factor (TNF-α), and interleukin (IL)-6 production as well as on nuclear factor kappa B (NF-ÎÂșB) and mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs) activation, were measured by using the enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA)and Western blotting. Results: GS-E3D potently inhibited TNF-α and IL-6 and also diminished NO over-production, which was accompanied by the down-regulation of iNOS expression. GS-E3D effectively suppressed LPS-induced NF-ÎÂșB activation through inhibiting the hyper-phosphorylation and degradation of IÎÂșB-α and phosphorylation of p38, ERK1/2 and JNK in MAPK signaling pathway. Conclusion: GS-E3D has a potential to be as an anti-inflammatory agent for functional food or cosmetic materials targeting on the NF-ÎÂșB p65 and MAPKs signaling pathways.Â

Background/Aims A comprehensive analysis of trends in the incidence of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is important for planning public health initiatives. We aimed to analyze the trends in HCC incidence in South Korea over 10 years and to predict the incidence for the year 2028. Methods Data from patients with newly diagnosed HCC between 2008 and 2018 were obtained from Korean National Health Insurance Service database. Age-standardized incidence rates (ASRs) were calculated to compare HCC incidence. A poisson regression model was used to predict the future incidence of HCC. Results The average crude incidence rate (CR) was 22.4 per 100,000 person-years, and the average ASR was 17.6 per 100,000 person-years between 2008 and 2018. The CR (from 23.9 to 21.2 per 100,000 person-years) and ASR (from 21.9 to 14.3 per 100,000 person-years) of HCC incidence decreased during the past ten years in all age groups, except in the elderly. The ASR of patients aged ≄80 years increased significantly (from 70.0 to 160.2/100,000 person-years; average annual percent change, +9.00%; P<0.001). The estimated CR (17.9 per 100,000 person-years) and ASR (9.7 per 100,000 person-years) of HCC incidence in 2028 was declined, but the number of HCC patients aged ≄80 years in 2028 will be quadruple greater than the number of HCC patients in 2008 (from 521 to 2,055), comprising 21.3% of all HCC patients in 2028. Conclusions The ASRs of HCC in Korea have gradually declined over the past 10 years, but the number, CR, and ASR are increasing in patients aged ≄80 years
