Development of a calibration pipeline for a monocular-view structured illumination 3D sensor utilizing an array projector

Commercial off-the-shelf digital projection systems are commonly used in active structured illumination photogrammetry of macro-scale surfaces due to their relatively low cost, accessibility, and ease of use. They can be described as inverse pinhole modelled. The calibration pipeline of a 3D sensor utilizing pinhole devices in a projector-camera setup configuration is already well-established. Recently, there have been advances in creating projection systems offering projection speeds greater than that available from conventional off-the-shelf digital projectors. However, they cannot be calibrated using well established techniques based on the pinole assumption. They are chip-less and without projection lens. This work is based on the utilization of unconventional projection systems known as array projectors which contain not one but multiple projection channels that project a temporal sequence of illumination patterns. None of the channels implement a digital projection chip or a projection lens. To workaround the calibration problem, previous realizations of a 3D sensor based on an array projector required a stereo-camera setup. Triangulation took place between the two pinhole modelled cameras instead. However, a monocular setup is desired as a single camera configuration results in decreased cost, weight, and form-factor. This study presents a novel calibration pipeline that realizes a single camera setup. A generalized intrinsic calibration process without model assumptions was developed that directly samples the illumination frustum of each array projection channel. An extrinsic calibration process was then created that determines the pose of the single camera through a downhill simplex optimization initialized by particle swarm. Lastly, a method to store the intrinsic calibration with the aid of an easily realizable calibration jig was developed for re-use in arbitrary measurement camera positions so that intrinsic calibration does not have to be repeated

Computed Decision Weights and a New Learning Algorithm for Neural Classifiers

In this paper we consider the possibility of computing rather than training the decision layer weights of a neural classifier. Such a possibility arises in two way, from making an appropriate choice of loss function and by solving a problem of constrained optimization. The latter formulation leads to a promising new learning process for pre-decision weights with both simplicity and efficacy

Residual negative symptoms differentiate cognitive performance in clinically stable patients with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder

Cognitive deficits in various domains have been shown in patients with bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. The purpose of the present study was to examine if residual psychopathology explained the difference in cognitive function between clinically stable patients with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. We compared the performance on tests of attention, visual and verbal memory and executive function of 25 patients with schizophrenia in remission and 25 euthymic bipolar disorder patients with that of 25 healthy controls. Mediation analysis was used to see if residual psychopathology could explain the difference in cognitive function between the patient groups. Both patient groups performed significantly worse than healthy controls on most cognitive tests. Patients with bipolar disorder displayed cognitive deficits that were milder but qualitatively similar to those of patients with schizophrenia. Residual negative symptoms mediated the difference in performance on cognitive tests between the two groups. Neither residual general psychotic symptoms nor greater antipsychotic doses explained this relationship. The shared variance explained by the residual negative and cognitive deficits that the difference between patient groups may be explained by greater frontal cortical neurophysiological deficits in patients with schizophrenia, compared to bipolar disorder. Further longitudinal work may provide insight into pathophysiological mechanisms that underlie these deficits

Modelling landslide debris flow with entrainment: development and validation

    Get PDF
The volume and mobility of a debris flow could increase with distance travelled as it has the potential to entrain a substantial amount of channel-bed material along its travel path. This entrainment effect renders the debris flow more devastating to downslope populations and facilities. Over the past two decades, the Geotechnical Engineering Office (GEO) of Hong Kong has expended considerable effort to develop debris mobility modelling tools for use in routine engineering practice for forward prediction purposes. Recently, GEO has completed a study to enhance an in-house debris mobility code. Physical parameters which can be estimated from the field by engineers or geologists are incorporated in the code to predict entrainment effects in a simple and rational manner. This allows the modelling of varying entrainment potential along a debris flow path. The code has been checked against simplified analytical solutions and validated against field observations in a major historical landslide event involving highmobility debris flows in Hong Kong. The numerical modelling results indicated that simulated entrainment volume and mobility characteristics are broadly consistent with geological field mapping records

Stress Tensor Perturbations in Conformal Field Theory

We reconsider the problem of deforming a conformal field theory to a neighboring theory which is again critical. An invariant formulation of this problem is important for understanding the underlying symmetry of string theory. We give a simple derivation of A. Sen’s recent formula for the change in the stress tensor and show that, when correctly interpreted, it is coordinate-invariant. We give the corresponding superconformal perturbation for superfield backgrounds and explain why it has no direct analog for spin-field backgrounds
