R-symmetric Gauge Mediation and the MRSSM
This is an invited summary of a seminar talk given at various institutions in
the United States and Canada. After a brief introduction, a review of the
minimal R-symmetric supersymmetric standard model is given, and the benefits to
the flavor sector are discussed. R-symmetric gauge mediation is an attempt to
realize this model using metastable supersymmetry breaking techniques. Sample
low energy spectra are presented and tuning is discussed. Various other
phenomenological results are summarized.Comment: 14 pages, invited Brief Review, submitted to Modern Physics Letters

An Electron Fixed Target Experiment to Search for a New Vector Boson A' Decaying to e+e-
We describe an experiment to search for a new vector boson A' with weak
coupling alpha' > 6 x 10^{-8} alpha to electrons (alpha=e^2/4pi) in the mass
range 65 MeV < m_A' < 550 MeV. New vector bosons with such small couplings
arise naturally from a small kinetic mixing of the "dark photon" A' with the
photon -- one of the very few ways in which new forces can couple to the
Standard Model -- and have received considerable attention as an explanation of
various dark matter related anomalies. A' bosons are produced by radiation off
an electron beam, and could appear as narrow resonances with small production
cross-section in the trident e+e- spectrum. We summarize the experimental
approach described in a proposal submitted to Jefferson Laboratory's PAC35,
PR-10-009. This experiment, the A' Experiment (APEX), uses the electron beam of
the Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility at Jefferson Laboratory
(CEBAF) at energies of ~1-4 GeV incident on 0.5-10% radiation length Tungsten
wire mesh targets, and measures the resulting e+e- pairs to search for the A'
using the High Resolution Spectrometer and the septum magnet in Hall A. With a
~1 month run, APEX will achieve very good sensitivity because the statistics of
e+e- pairs will be ~10,000 times larger in the explored mass range than any
previous search for the A' boson. These statistics and the excellent mass
resolution of the spectrometers allow sensitivity to alpha'/alpha one to three
orders of magnitude below current limits, in a region of parameter space of
great theoretical and phenomenological interest. Similar experiments could also
be performed at other facilities, such as the Mainz Microtron.Comment: 19 pages, 12 figures, 2 table
Meta-Stable Dynamical Supersymmetry Breaking Near Points of Enhanced Symmetry
We show that metastable supersymmetry breaking is generic near certain
enhanced symmetry points of gauge theory moduli spaces. Our model consists of
two sectors coupled by a singlet and combines dynamical supersymmetry breaking
with an O'Raifeartaigh mechanism in terms of confined variables. All relevant
mass parameters, including the supersymmetry breaking scale, are generated
dynamically. The metastable vacua appear as a result of a balance between
non-perturbative and perturbative quantum effects along a pseudo-runaway
direction.Comment: 27 pages, harvmac, 6 figure
A Hybrid Higgs
We construct composite Higgs models admitting a weakly coupled Seiberg dual
description. We focus on the possibility that only the up-type Higgs is an
elementary field, while the down-type Higgs arises as a composite hadron. The
model, based on a confining SQCD theory, breaks supersymmetry and electroweak
symmetry dynamically and calculably. This simultaneously solves the \mu/B_\mu
problem and explains the smallness of the bottom and tau masses compared to the
top mass. The proposal is then applied to a class of models where the same
confining dynamics is used to generate the Standard Model flavor hierarchy by
quark and lepton compositeness. This provides a unified framework for flavor,
supersymmetry breaking and electroweak physics. The weakly coupled dual is used
to explicitly compute the MSSM parameters in terms of a few microscopic
couplings, giving interesting relations between the electroweak and soft
parameters. The RG evolution down to the TeV scale is obtained and salient
phenomenological predictions of this class of "single-sector" models are
discussed.Comment: 56 pages, 7 figures, v2: discussion on FCNCs and references added,

The politics of in/visibility: carving out queer space in Ul'yanovsk

In spite of a growing interest within sexualities studies in the concept of queer space (Oswin 2008), existing literature focuses almost exclusively on its most visible and territorialised forms, such as the gay scene, thus privileging Western metropolitan areas as hubs of queer consumer culture (Binnie 2004). While the literature has emphasised the political significance of queer space as a site of resistance to hegemonic gender and sexual norms, it has again predominantly focused on overt claims to public space embodied in Pride events, neglecting other less open forms of resistance.

This article contributes new insights to current debates about the construction and meaning of queer space by considering how city space is appropriated by an informal queer network in Ulâianovsk. The group routinely occupied very public locations meeting and socialising on the street or in mainstream cafĂ©s in central Ulâianovsk, although claims to these spaces as queer were mostly contingent, precarious or invisible to outsiders. The article considers how provincial location affects tactics used to carve out communal space, foregrounding the importance of local context and collective agency in shaping specific forms of resistance, and questioning ethnocentric assumptions about the empowering potential of visibility.

Dark Force Detection in Low Energy e-p Collisions
We study the prospects for detecting a light boson X with mass m_X < 100 MeV
at a low energy electron-proton collider. We focus on the case where X
dominantly decays to e+ e- as motivated by recent "dark force" models. In order
to evade direct and indirect constraints, X must have small couplings to the
standard model (alpha_X 10 MeV).
By comparing the signal and background cross sections for the e- p e+ e- final
state, we conclude that dark force detection requires an integrated luminosity
of around 1 inverse attobarn, achievable with a forthcoming JLab proposal.Comment: 38 pages, 19 figures; v2, references adde
Search for a new gauge boson in the Experiment (APEX)
We present a search at Jefferson Laboratory for new forces mediated by
sub-GeV vector bosons with weak coupling to electrons. Such a
particle can be produced in electron-nucleus fixed-target scattering and
then decay to an pair, producing a narrow resonance in the QED trident
spectrum. Using APEX test run data, we searched in the mass range 175--250 MeV,
found no evidence for an reaction, and set an upper limit of
. Our findings demonstrate that fixed-target
searches can explore a new, wide, and important range of masses and couplings
for sub-GeV forces.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures, references adde
Decaying Dark Matter in Supersymmetric Model and Cosmic-Ray Observations
We study cosmic-rays in decaying dark matter scenario, assuming that the dark
matter is the lightest superparticle and it decays through a R-parity violating
operator. We calculate the fluxes of cosmic-rays from the decay of the dark
matter and those from the standard astrophysical phenomena in the same
propagation model using the GALPROP package. We reevaluate the preferred
parameters characterizing standard astrophysical cosmic-ray sources with taking
account of the effects of dark matter decay. We show that, if energetic leptons
are produced by the decay of the dark matter, the fluxes of cosmic-ray positron
and electron can be in good agreements with both PAMELA and Fermi-LAT data in
wide parameter region. It is also discussed that, in the case where sizable
number of hadrons are also produced by the decay of the dark matter, the mass
of the dark matter is constrained to be less than 200-300 GeV in order to avoid
the overproduction of anti-proton. We also show that the cosmic gamma-ray flux
can be consistent with the results of Fermi-LAT observation if the mass of the
dark matter is smaller than nearly 4 TeV.Comment: 24 pages, 5 figure
R-symmetry and supersymmetry breaking in 3D WZ models
We analyze metastable supersymmetry breaking in 3D WZ models. We study the
regime of validity of the perturbative computation for superpotentials with
marginal and relevant couplings. Lifetime of the metastable states in presence
of a triangular potential barrier is estimated.Comment: 1+16 pages, 2 figures, JHEP3.cl
