Certify or not? An analysis of organic food supply chain with competing suppliers

    Get PDF
Customers expect companies to provide clear health-related information for the products they purchase in a big data environment. Organic food is data-enabled with the organic label, but the certification cost discourages small-scale suppliers from certifying their product. This lack of a label means that product that satisfies the organic standard is regarded as conventional product. By considering the trade-off between the profit gained from organic label and additional costs of certification, this paper investigates an organic food supply chain where a leading retailer procures from two suppliers with different brands. Customers care about both the brand-value and quality (more specifically, if food is organic or not) when purchasing the product. We explore the organic certification and wholesale pricing strategies for suppliers, and the supplier selection and retail pricing strategies for the retailer. We find that when two suppliers adopt asymmetric certification strategy, the retailer tends to procure the product with organic label. The supplier without a brand name can compensate with organic certification, which leads to more profits than the branded rival. As the risk of being abandoned by the retailer increases, the supplier without a brand name is more eager than the rival to obtain the organic label. If both suppliers certify the product, however, they will fall into a prisoner’s dilemma under situation with low health utility from organic label and high certification cost

A comparative study on performance characteristics of multicomponent core-spun yarns containing cotton/PET/elastane

This paper experimentally investigated the characteristics of different (filament and multicomponent) core-spun yarn type. Filament core-spun yarns comprised cotton covered drawn textured (DTY) polyester (PET) filaments with four different filament finenesses. Regarding the production of multicomponent (dual) core-spun yarns, both PET with four different filament finenesses and elastane with four levels of draft variable were fed simultaneously. Yarn samples were produced with modified ring spinning system at the same spinning conditions. As a control group, 100% cotton ring-spun yarn was also manufactured. Tensile properties, unevenness, imperfections and hairiness of yarn samples were determined. Also, fatigue characteristics of yarn samples were examined at two different loading of cycles. The results showed that filament fineness had a significant effect on all yarn properties being determined. Dynamic modulus and dynamic strain properties of yarns, filament fineness, elastane draft and number of cycle were found to be statistically significant at 0.05 level. © 2019, © 2019 The Textile Institute

New knowledge in strategic management through visually mining semantic networks

Today’s highly competitive business world requires that managers be able to make fast and accurate strategic decisions, as well as learn to adapt to new strategic challenges. This necessity calls for a deep experience and a dynamic understanding of strategic management. The trait of dynamic understanding is mainly the skill of generating additional knowledge and innovative solutions under the new environmental conditions. Building on the concepts of information processing, this paper aims to support managers in constructing new strategic management knowledge, through representing and mining existing knowledge through graph visualization. To this end, a three-stage framework is proposed and described. The framework can enable managers to develop a deeper understanding of the strategic management domain, and expand on existing knowledge through visual analysis. The model further supports a case study that involves unstructured knowledge of profit patterns and the related strategies to succeed using these patterns. The applicability of the framework is shown in the case study, where the unstructured knowledge in a strategic management book is first represented as a semantic network, and then visually mined for revealing new knowledge.</p

Aripiprazole as a treatment option for delusional parasitosis: case series of 8 patients

OBJECTIVE: Delusional parasitosis (DP), also known as Ekbom’s Syndrome, is a rare, generally monosymptomatic disorder that characterizes with the fixed belief of being infected by parasites without any evidence of medical or microbiological proof. These patients are examined in dermatology and infection clinics with symptoms and signs of pruritus, skin and subcutaneous scars secondary to itching. Primary DP is diagnosed when no etiological factor is detected while secondary DP arises from underlying physical or mental disorder. Formerly, pimozide was the commonly preferred choice of treatment with cases of DP. However, there is growing evidence that second-generation antipsychotics and antidepressants can be used in the treatment of DP. In this study, the usage of aripiprazole in the treatment of DP cases is presented. METHODS: 8 patients with the diagnosis of primary DP were evaluated in terms of demographic data, clinical variables and responses to treatment. A psychiatric diagnosis was made based on a clinical interview performed using Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV Axis I Disorders (SCID-I) SCID-I. The patients were followed for six months. Three patients were female, five patients were male. The average age of the patients was 57.5. Four patients had essential hypertension as comorbidity. The duration of the symptoms ranged from 6 to 48 months with an average of 24.75 months. All of our 8 cases were consulted by the dermatology department. The patients were performed Hamilton Depression Scale (HDS) and Mini-Mental Status Examination (MMSE). Eight patients were treated with aripiprazole 10 or 15 mg/day, and no dose alteration was made. RESULTS: From the patients who were treated with aripiprazole, seven (87.5%) patients had complete remission after three months, eight (100%) patients achieved complete remission after six months. DISCUSSION: The earliest drug choice for patients with DP was pimozide, but because of the extrapyramidal side effects and cardiac side effects like QTc prolongation, second-generation antipsychotics are being investigated for treatment. Various researches are available related to the usage of second-generation antipsychotics like risperidone, olanzapine, paliperidone, ziprasidone, quetiapine, and aripiprazole in the cases with DP. This study shows that aripiprazole can be a successful treatment choice for DP, but further studies are needed for this topic

The dynamic and complex nature of children's sense of physical environment (Lim, Barton, 2010) with respect to the location of the space concerning cultural conditions, relations, and parameters direct design criteria to meet pedagogic, physiologic, and biological needs and requirements of the children in the preschool interiors. This enquiry has grown out of the desire to examine the parameters, cultural aspects, dimensions, or contexts affecting the built environment in the preschool interiors where children spend most of their time out of their home. Conceptual components affecting the interior space of pre-school education centers are identified and based on literature review, interviews, surveys, observational data, and statistical concepts such as education models, socio-economic conditions, appreciation of adults, child-teacher-parent relations, and location related to culture. These contextual connections and relations with the interior environment shaped the body of the study. Based on the above-mentioned items, a research questionnaire was used in centers located in the epsilon ankaya and epsilon ayyolu regions of Ankara. Subjects were randomly selected from among the parents of these preschools' students. Accordingly, the research questionnaire was directed to a total of 200 respondents from 15 pre-school centers; these preschool education centers are the ones applying the Montessori education model, providing education in English and highlighting features like physical space comfort, etc. Those centers have maintained their corporate identity thanks to the above-counted features. Consequently, data has shown that the education model, socio-economic conditions, appreciation of adults, child-teacher-parent relations, and location have an indirect and direct bearing on parent perception of the preschool centers which affects the centers' formation of Interior spatial design.Anaokullarının mekansal oluşumu,çocuğun,değişen fiziksel çevre koşullarına bağlı olarak gelişen karmaşık ve dinamik bir etkileşim sürecidir.
