    Preface: Special Topic on Supramolecular Self-Assembly at Surfaces

    Supramolecular self-assembly at surfaces is one of the most exciting and active fields in Surface Science today. Applications can take advantage of two key properties: (i) versatile pattern formation over a broad length scale and (ii) tunability of electronic structure and transport properties, as well as frontier orbital alignment. It provides a new frontier for Chemical Physics as it uniquely combines the versatility of Organic Synthesis and the Physics of Interfaces.     Decoherence under many-body system-environment interactions: a stroboscopic representation based on a fictitiously homogenized interaction rate

    An environment interacting with portions of a system leads to multiexponential interaction rates. Within the Keldysh formalism, we fictitiously homogenize the system-environment interaction yielding a uniform decay rate facilitating the evaluation of the propagators. Through an injection procedure we neutralize the fictitious interactions. This technique justifies a stroboscopic representation of the system-environment interaction which is useful for numerical implementation and converges to the natural continuous process. We apply this procedure to a fermionic two-level system and use the Jordan-Wigner transformation to solve a two-spin swapping gate in the presence of a spin environment.Comment: 11 pages, 3 figures, title changed, some typos change

    Post-delivery oxidative stress in women with preeclampsia or IUGR

    Aim: To compare oxidative stress in patients with preeclampsia (PE) or intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) vs. normal pregnancy (controls) during 48h after delivery. Study design: Women with singleton pregnancies were recruited immediately after delivery (gestational age >26.0weeks). Women with PE or IUGR were matched with healthy controls by age, BMI, gestational age and delivery mode. Venous blood samples and urine samples were tested for oxidative stress products 24h and 48h after delivery. Results: Plasma malondialdehyde (MDA) concentration 24h after delivery was significantly higher in subjects with PE or IUGR (3.41±1.14μmol/L, n=20) than in controls (2.91±0.82μmol/L, n=38) (P=0.04). Urine iPF2α-VI declined from 24 to 48h after delivery significantly in controls (P=0.006) and not in subjects with PE or IUGR (P=0.71). Conclusion: Of the markers tested only MDA is indicating higher oxidative stress in women with PE/IUGR than in normal pregnancy and only at 24h after delivery. No consistent pattern of change in the oxidative stress markers exists between 24-48h after deliver

    Cdx4 Dysregulates Hox Gene Expression and Generates Acute Myeloid Leukemia Alone and in Cooperation with Meis1a in a Murine Model

    HOX genes have emerged as critical effectors of leukemogenesis, but the mechanisms that regulate their expression in leukemia are not well understood. Recent data suggest that the caudal homeobox transcription factors CDX1, CDX2, and CDX4, developmental regulators of HOX gene expression, may contribute to HOX gene dysregulation in leukemia. We report here that CDX4 is expressed normally in early hematopoietic progenitors and is expressed aberrantly in approximately 25% of acute myeloid leukemia (AML) patient samples. Cdx4 regulates Hox gene expression in the adult murine hematopoietic system and dysregulates Hox genes that are implicated in leukemogenesis. Furthermore, bone marrow progenitors that are retrovirally engineered to express Cdx4 serially replate in methylcellulose cultures, grow in liquid culture, and generate a partially penetrant, long-latency AML in bone marrow transplant recipients. Coexpression of the Hox cofactor Meis1a accelerates the Cdx4 AML phenotype and renders it fully penetrant. Structure-function analysis demonstrates that leukemic transformation requires intact Cdx4 transactivation and DNA-binding domains but not the putative Pbx cofactor interaction motif. Together, these data indicate that Cdx4 regulates Hox gene expression in adult hematopoiesis and may serve as an upstream regulator of Hox gene expression in the induction of acute leukemia. Inasmuch as many human leukemias show dysregulated expression of a spectrum of HOX family members, these collective findings also suggest a central role for CDX4 expression in the genesis of acute leukemia

    Production of influenza virus-like particles by insect cells and removal of baculovirus from virus-like particles and other extracellular vesicles

    Enveloped virus-like particles (eVLPs) are a complementary strategy for the manufacturing of vaccines against enveloped viruses. The baculovirus expression vector system (BEVS) in insect cells is an attractive and widely used platform for the expression of eVLPs. Inherent to this system is the co-expression of baculoviruses and other extracellular vesicles, which we could nicely demonstrate by high resolution electron microscopy on one of our expression supernatants (Figure 1). Such heterogenous sample mixtures pose a major bottleneck for effective downstream processing of insect cell-expressed enveloped virus-like particles. eVLPs, baculoviruses and extracellular vesicles are similar in size and share a lot of common surface properties which make chromatographic separation difficult. In addition, immune responses against baculoviruses have been reported in humans, therefore efficient removal is mandatory. Please click Download on the upper right corner to see the full abstract
