This article aims to analyze the issue of respect for human rights of Syrian refugees, from previous and subsequent analysis to refugee status. Initially, it discusses the origin of the armed conflict in Syria, and the consequences to its citizens, which has sought international protection in neighboring countries and Europe. Then, analyzes the international policies adopted for refugees and impacts in destination countries. Finally, it deals with the issue of human rights guaranteed by international laws and statutes, all those who seek protection under refugee status. Thus, it aims to find out how the fundamental rights of Syrian citizens have been threatened or violated by their country of origin and international policies adopted in support of Syrian refugees.O presente artigo tem por objetivo analisar a questão de respeito aos direitos humanos dos refugiados sírios, partindo de análise anterior e posterior ao status de refugiado.

Impact of spinal deformity characteristics on patient-reported outcome measurement information system scores in patients with idiopathic scoliosis undergoing posterior spinal fusion

INTRODUCTION: The impact of posterior spinal fusion (PSF) on physical function and pain and mental health in pediatric patients as quantified by the Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System (PROMIS), developed by the National Institute of Health, is largely unknown. The purpose of this study is to report the changes of PROMIS scores for upper extremity (UE), pain interference (PI), mobility (MOB), and peer relationships (PR) after PSF in patients with idiopathic scoliosis (IS), compare postoperative changes in PROMIS PI and Scoliosis Research Society-30 pain scores, and evaluate associations between curve characteristics and PROMIS scores. METHODS: A retrospective cohort of 122 patients (\u3c18 years old) who underwent PSF for IS was identified through electronic medical record search. PROMIS scores were obtained preoperatively and 6 weeks, 6 months, 1 years, 2 years, and 3 years postoperatively. RESULTS: The mean age of the cohort was 14.2 ± 1.6 years, and the mean Cobb angle was 62.9 ± 13.8° at surgery. Eighty patients had preoperative PROMIS data. UE and MOB scores were statistically lower at 6 weeks and 6 months postoperatively and returned to baseline with a longer follow-up. PI scores were significantly lower at 1 and 2 years postoperatively. PR was unchanged up to 2 years postoperatively and then showed significant improvement. There was a statistically significant negative relationships between lowest instrumented vertebra and PROMIS UE and MOB scores at 6 weeks and 1 year postoperatively, but not at a longer follow-up. There were no significant differences noted in PI and PR PROMIS scores and lowest instrumented vertebra. PROMIS scores were not statistically associated with the Lenke Classification, number of vertebral levels fused, or percentage coronal correction. DISCUSSION: Changes in PROMIS functional domains (UE and MOB) postoperatively normalize at longer follow-ups. Changes in PI and PR demonstrated improvements over preoperative values at 1 to 2 years postoperatively. Preoperative coronal and sagittal measures, and the percentage correction did not correlate with any PROMIS scores

Applying the Strengths Perspective to Increase Safety and Weil-Being: Views from Families and Providers

Consensus about the value of the strengths perspective is developing among child welfare and family service practitioners. Yet, few first-hand reports are available from the perspectives of family members and interdisciplinary service providers about the principles most important for engaging and supporting family members to achieve needed outcomes. This paper briefly highlights principles most often cited as key to application of the strengths perspective and compares first-hand accounts from family members and service providers. These views were elicited through focus groups facilitated by a community-based family support program.Implications for strengths-based practice with families are discussed

Psychometric Properties of the PSVT:R Outcome Measure: A Preliminary Study of Introductory Engineering Design Graphics

The Purdue Spatial Visualization Tests: Visualization of Rotations (PVST:R)is among the most commonly used measurement instruments to assess spatial ability. This paper presents the preliminary findings of a factor analysis of the PSVT:R given to 335 introductory engineering design graphics students. Psychometric analysis of the student sample data indicated alternate loading patterns, divergent from a single factor solution

The Fisk-Vanderbilt Master’s-to-Ph.D. Bridge Program: Recognizing, Enlisting, and Cultivating Unrealized or Unrecognized Potential in Underrepresented Minority Students

The Fisk-Vanderbilt Masters-to-Ph.D. Bridge Program is a model for substantially increasing the number of underrepresented minority students earning doctoral degrees in the physical sciences. The program presently leads the nation in master’s degrees in physics for African-Americans, and is one of the top ten producers of physics master’s degrees among all U.S. citizens. The program is on pace to become the nation’s top producer of underrepresented minority Ph.Ds. in physics, astronomy, and materials science. We summarize the main features of the program, including two of its core strategies: Partnering a minority-serving institution and a major research university through collaborative research, and using the master’s degree as a pathway to the Ph.D. We discuss our methods for recognizing and selecting for unrealized potential in students during the admissions process, and for cultivating this potential to develop successful scientists and leaders
