    ІНЖЕНЕРИ У СКЛАДІ ДЕПУТАЦІЇ ВІД УКРАЇНСЬКИХ ГУБЕРНІЙ У ДЕРЖАВНІЙ ДУМІ РОСІЙСЬКОЇ ІМПЕРІЇ (1906-1917 рр.)

    В останні два-три десятиліття історики проявляють постійний інтерес до народу як носія влади і до форм участі його в державотворенні. Досвід прожи-тих років трактується як надбання нації, відтак вивчення комплексу проблем, пов’язаних з участю депутатів від українських губерній Російської імперії в ін-ституції парламентського типу – Державній думі – є актуальною проблемою. Об’єктом цього дослідження є суспільно-політичні процеси в українських губе-рніях Російської імперії, власне у Наддніпрянській Україні, на початку ХХ ст., предметом – депутати Державної думи перших чотирьох скликань, обрані від українських губерній і міст, конкретно – інженери за фахом. Мета дослідження – розгляд соціопрофесійної групи технічної інтеліген-ції в загальному складі думської депутації. Цьому складу притаманна в цілому дуже строката структура у своїх соціальних, політичних, освітніх, професійних, конфесійних та інших характеристиках. Тому, окрім іншого, необхідно визна-чити місце інженерів у цьому середовищі й подати конкретну інформацію про них. При цьому власне думська діяльність їх наразі не розглядається, як і пода-льша їх доля після 1917 року. Завдання щодо конкретної інформації випливає зі стану історіографічної розробки проблеми. Думська проблематика є дуже популярною у Російській Федерації; сплеск інтересу до неї посилився у зв'язку з широким відзначенням столітнього ювілею Думи у РФ у 2006 році [13]. В Україні досі не існує якогось центру вивчення зазначених проблем, проте на рівні дисертаційних досліджень та статей їх розробка все ж здійснюється, причому географія таких досліджень досить широка, від Харкова до Кам’янця-Подільського [9; 5].     Chandra Observation of 3C 212: a New Look at the X-ray and UV Absorbers

    The red quasar 3C 212 (z=1.049) is one of the most distant and most luminous AGN which has shown evidence of an X-ray warm absorber. In order to further investigate this unusual quasar, we used Chandra/ACIS-S to observe 3C 212 for 19.5 ksec, resulting in a net detection of ~4000 counts. The Chandra data confirm the presence of an excess absorbing column N_H ~ 4 x 10^21 cm^-2 at the quasar redshift, but we find no compelling evidence for a warm absorber. Using both the Chandra and archival ROSAT PSPC data, we obtain very good fits for both a partially covered neutral absorber and a low-ionization (U = 0.03) photo-ionized absorber. In the ultraviolet, 3C 212 shows a strong associated MgII absorber. Based on a moderate resolution (80 km/s) MMT spectrum we show that the absorber is highly saturated and has a covering fraction less than 60%, implying that the absorber is truly intrinsic to the quasar. Photo-ionization modeling of the MgII absorber yields a constraint on the ionization parameter of U < 0.03, inconsistent with a warm UV/X-ray absorber. In addition to our spectral analysis, we find evidence in the ACIS image data for weak extended emission surrounding the quasar as well as emission corresponding to the radio lobes at a distance of 5 arcsec from 3C 212. The statistical significance of these features is low, but we briefly explore the implications if the detections are valid.Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures, Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journa

    Analytic frameworks for assessing dialogic argumentation in online learning environments

    Over the last decade, researchers have developed sophisticated online learning environments to support students engaging in argumentation. This review first considers the range of functionalities incorporated within these online environments. The review then presents five categories of analytic frameworks focusing on (1) formal argumentation structure, (2) normative quality, (3) nature and function of contributions within the dialog, (4) epistemic nature of reasoning, and (5) patterns and trajectories of participant interaction. Example analytic frameworks from each category are presented in detail rich enough to illustrate their nature and structure. This rich detail is intended to facilitate researchers’ identification of possible frameworks to draw upon in developing or adopting analytic methods for their own work. Each framework is applied to a shared segment of student dialog to facilitate this illustration and comparison process. Synthetic discussions of each category consider the frameworks in light of the underlying theoretical perspectives on argumentation, pedagogical goals, and online environmental structures. Ultimately the review underscores the diversity of perspectives represented in this research, the importance of clearly specifying theoretical and environmental commitments throughout the process of developing or adopting an analytic framework, and the role of analytic frameworks in the future development of online learning environments for argumentation

    XMM-Newton observations of the Narrow-Line Seyfert 1 galaxy Mrk 335 in an historical low X-ray flux state

    We report the discovery of strong soft X-ray emission lines and a hard continuum above 2 keV in the Narrow-Line Seyfert 1 galaxy Mrk 335 during an extremely low X-ray flux state. Mrk 335 was observed for 22 ks by XMM-Newton in July 2007 as a Target of Opportunity to examine it in its X-ray low-flux state, which was discovered with Swift. Long-term light curves suggest that this is the lowest flux state this AGN has ever been seen in. However, Mrk 335 is still sufficiently bright that its X-ray properties can be studied in detail. The X-ray continuum spectrum is very complex and requires several components to model. Statistically, partial covering and blurred reflection models work well. We confirm the presence of a strong narrow Fe line at 6.4 keV. High-resolution spectroscopy with the XMM-RGS reveals strong, soft X-ray emission lines not detected in previous, higher signal-to-noise, XMM-Newton observations, such as: highly ionized Fe lines, O VII, Ne IX and Mg XI lines. The optical/UV fluxes are similar to those previously measured with Swift.     Subaru High-Dispersion Spectroscopy of Narrow-Line Region in the Seyfert Galaxy NGC 4151

    We report on a study of forbidden emission-line spectrum of nearby Seyfert 1.5 galaxy NGC 4151 based on the high-resolution (R ~ 45,000) optical spectrum obtained by using the High Dispersion Spectrograph boarded on the Subaru Telescope. The profile parameters such as the emission-line widths, the velocity shifts from the recession velocity of the host galaxy, and the asymmetry indices, for emission lines including very faint ones such as [Ar IV]4712,4740 and [Fe VI]5631,5677 are investigated. Statistically significant correlations between the measured profile parameters and the critical densities of transitions are found while there are no meaningful correlations between the profile parameters and the ionization potentials of ions. By comparing the results with photoionization model calculations, we remark that a simple power-law distribution of the gas density which is independent of the radius from the nucleus cannot explain the observed correlation between the emission-line widths and the critical densities of the transitions. Taking the additional dense gas component expected to exist at the innermost of the narrow-line region into account, the observed correlations between the emission-line width and the critical density of the transitions can be understood since high-critical-density emission lines can arise at such relatively inner regions even if their ionization potentials are low. The observed correlation between the blueshift amounts of emission lines and the critical densities of the ions is also explained if such dense gas clouds located closer to the nucleus have larger outflowing velocities.Comment: 19 pages and 1 separate jpeg figure.     Interactions among the A and T Units of an ECF-Type Biotin Transporter Analyzed by Site-Specific Crosslinking

    Energy-coupling factor (ECF) transporters are a huge group of micronutrient importers in prokaryotes. They are composed of a substrate-specific transmembrane protein (S component) and a module consisting of a moderately conserved transmembrane protein (T component) and two ABC ATPase domains (A components). Modules of A and T units may be dedicated to a specific S component or shared by many different S units in an organism. The mode of subunit interactions in ECF transporters is largely unknown. BioMNY, the focus of the present study, is a biotin transporter with a dedicated AT module. It consists of the S unit BioY, the A unit BioM and the T unit BioN. Like all T units, BioN contains two three-amino-acid signatures with a central Arg residue in a cytoplasmic helical region. Our previous work had demonstrated a central role of the two motifs in T units for stability and function of BioMNY and other ECF transporters. Here we show by site-specific crosslinking of pairs of mono-cysteine variants that the Ala-Arg-Ser and Ala-Arg-Gly signatures in BioN are coupling sites to the BioM ATPases. Analysis of 64 BioN-BioM pairs uncovered interactions of both signatures predominantly with a segment of ∼13 amino acid residues C-terminal of the Q loop of BioM. Our results further demonstrate that portions of all BioN variants with single Cys residues in the two signatures are crosslinked to homodimers. This finding may point to a dimeric architecture of the T unit in BioMNY complexes

    Probing the Ionizing Continuum of Narrow-Line Seyfert 1 Galaxies. I.Observational Results

    We present optical spectra and emission-line ratios of 12 Narrow-Line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) galaxies that we observed to study the ionizing EUV continuum. A common feature in the EUV continuum of active galactic nuclei is the big blue bump (BBB), generally associated with thermal accretion disk emission. While Galactic absorption prevents direct access to the EUV range, it can be mapped by measuring the strength of a variety of forbidden optical emission lines that respond to different EUV continuum regions. We find that narrow emission-line ratios involving [OII]3727, Hbeta, [OIII]5007, [OI]6300, Halpha,[NII]6583, and [SII]6716,6731 indicate no significant difference between NLS1s and Broad-Line Seyfert 1 (BLS1) galaxies, which suggests that the spectral energy distributions of their ionizing EUV - soft X-ray continua are similar. The relative strength of important forbidden high ionization lines like [NeV]3426 compared to HeII4686 and the relative strength of [FeX]6374 appear to show the same range as in BLS1 galaxies. However, a trend of weaker F([OI]6300)/F(Halpha) emission-line ratios is indicated for NLS1s compared to BLS1s. To recover the broad emission-line profiles we used Gaussian components. This approach indicates that the broad Hbeta profile can be well described with a broad component (FWHM = 3275 +- 800 km/s) and an intermediate broad component (FWHM = 1200 +- 300 km/s). The width of the broad component is in the typical range of normal BLS1s. The emission-line flux that is associated with the broad component in these NLS1s amounts to at least 60% of the total flux.     Outflows of very ionized gas in the center of Seyfert galaxies: kinematics and physical conditions

    Mid-resolution spectra are used to deduce the size and kinematics of the coronal gas in a sample of Seyfert galaxies by means of observations of the [FeXI], [FeX], [FeVII], [SiVI] and [SiVII] lines. These coronal lines (CL) extend from the unresolved nucleus up to a few tens to a few hundreds of parsecs. The region of the highest ionized ions studied, [FeXI] and [FeX], is the least spatially extended, and concentrates at the center; intermediate ionization lines extend from the nucleus up to a few tens to a few hundred parsecs; lower [OIII]-like ions are known to extendin the kpc range. All together indicates a stratification in the ionized gas, usually interpreted in terms of nuclear photoionization as the driving ionization mechanism. However, CL profiles show various peculiarities: they are broader by a factor of two than lower ionization lines, the broadening being in terms of asymmetric blue wings, and their centroid position at the nucleus is blueshifted by a few hundreds of km/s. Moreover, in NGC1386 and NGC1068, a double peak [FeVII] line is detected in the nuclear and extended coronal region, this being the first report in of such type of profile in CL in active galactic nuclei. If interpreted as outflow signatures, the total broadening of the lines at zero intensity levels implies gas velocities up to 2000 km/s. Although the stratification of ions across the coronal region means that photoionization is the main power mechanism, the high velocities deduced from the profiles, the relatively large spatial extension of the emission, and the results from photoionization models indicate that an additional mechanism is at work.     Analyzing collaborative learning processes automatically

    In this article we describe the emerging area of text classification research focused on the problem of collaborative learning process analysis both from a broad perspective and more specifically in terms of a publicly available tool set called TagHelper tools. Analyzing the variety of pedagogically valuable facets of learners’ interactions is a time consuming and effortful process. Improving automated analyses of such highly valued processes of collaborative learning by adapting and applying recent text classification technologies would make it a less arduous task to obtain insights from corpus data. This endeavor also holds the potential for enabling substantially improved on-line instruction both by providing teachers and facilitators with reports about the groups they are moderating and by triggering context sensitive collaborative learning support on an as-needed basis. In this article, we report on an interdisciplinary research project, which has been investigating the effectiveness of applying text classification technology to a large CSCL corpus that has been analyzed by human coders using a theory-based multidimensional coding scheme. We report promising results and include an in-depth discussion of important issues such as reliability, validity, and efficiency that should be considered when deciding on the appropriateness of adopting a new technology such as TagHelper tools. One major technical contribution of this work is a demonstration that an important piece of the work towards making text classification technology effective for this purpose is designing and building linguistic pattern detectors, otherwise known as features, that can be extracted reliably from texts and that have high predictive power for the categories of discourse actions that the CSCL community is interested in
