Ladders for Wilson Loops Beyond Leading Order
We set up a general scheme to resum ladder diagrams for the quark-anti-quark
potential in N=4 super-Yang-Mills theory, and do explicit calculations at the
next-to-leading order. The results perfectly agree with string theory in
AdS(5)xS(5) when continued to strong coupling, in spite of a potential
order-of-limits problem.Comment: 18 pages, 5 figure
Investigation of relationships between linears, total and hazy areas, and petroleum production in the Williston Basin: An ERTS approach
The author has identified the following significant results. ERTS-1 imagery in a variety of formats was used to locate linear, tonal, and hazy features and to relate them to areas of hydrocarbon production in the Williston Basin of North Dakota, eastern Montana, and northern South Dakota. Derivative maps of rectilinear, curvilinear, tonal, and hazy features were made using standard laboratory techniques. Mapping of rectilinears on both bands 5 and 7 over the entire region indicated the presence of a northeast-southwest and a northwest-southeast regional trend which is indicative of the bedrock fracture pattern in the basin. Curved lines generally bound areas of unique tone, maps of tonal patterns repeat many of the boundaries seen on curvilinear maps. Tones were best analyzed on spring and fall imagery in the Williston Basin. It is postulated that hazy areas are caused by atmospheric phenomena. The ability to use ERTS imagery as an exploration tool was examined where petroleum and gas are presently produced (Bottineau Field, Nesson and Antelope anticlines, Redwing Creek, and Cedar Creek anticline). It is determined that some tonal and linear features coincide with location of present production in Redwing and Cedar Creeks. In the remaining cases, targets could not be sufficiently well defined to justify this method

Evidence for nodal superconductivity in LaFePO
In several iron-arsenide superconductors there is strong evidence for a fully
gapped superconducting state consistent with either a conventional s-wave
symmetry or an unusual state where there the gap changes sign between
the electron and hole Fermi surface sheets. Here we report measurements of the
penetration depth in very clean samples of the related
iron-phosphide superconductor, LaFePO, at temperatures down to 100 mK.
We find that varies almost perfectly linearly with strongly
suggesting the presence of gap nodes in this compound. Taken together with
other data, this suggests the gap function may not be generic to all pnictide
superconductors
Spin-axis relaxation in spin-exchange collisions of alkali atoms
We present calculations of spin-relaxation rates of alkali-metal atoms due to
the spin-axis interaction acting in binary collisions between the atoms. We
show that for the high-temperature conditions of interest here, the spin
relaxation rates calculated with classical-path trajectories are nearly the
same as those calculated with the distorted-wave Born approximation. We compare
these calculations to recent experiments that used magnetic decoupling to
isolate spin relaxation due to binary collisions from that due to the formation
of triplet van-der-Waals molecules. The values of the spin-axis coupling
coefficients deduced from measurements of binary collision rates are consistent
with those deduced from molecular decoupling experiments. All the experimental
data is consistent with a simple and physically plausible scaling law for the
spin-axis coupling coefficients.Comment: text+1 figur
China Near Seas Combat Capabilities
The capstone U.S. Defense Department study on the future operational environment declares, China\u27s rise represents the most significant single event on the international horizon since the collapse of the Cold War. Understanding and assessing changes in China\u27s traditionally defensive naval strategy, doctrine, and force structure are of obvious importance to the U.S. Navy (USN) and other Pacific navies concerned with the possible security implications of that rise.
