Crimean-Congo Hemorrhagic Fever Virus in High-Risk Population, Turkey

    Get PDF
In the Tokat and Sivas provinces of Turkey, the overall Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever virus (CCHFV) seroprevalence was 12.8% among 782 members of a high-risk population. CCHFV seroprevalence was associated with history of tick bite or tick removal from animals, employment in animal husbandry or farming, and being >40 years of age

<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Crimean-Congo Hemorrhagic Fever (CCHF) is a fatal infection, but no clinical case due to AP92 strain was reported. We described the first clinical case due to AP92 like CCHFV.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>A case infected by a AP92 like CCHFV was detected in Balkanian part of Turkey. Diagnosis was confirmed by RT-PCR and sequencing. A human serologic and tick survey studies were performed in the region, where the case detected.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Thirty eight individuals out of 741 were found to be anti CCHFV IgM positive. The attack rate for overall CCHFV was calculated as 5.2%. In univariate analyses, CCHFV IgM positivity was found to be associated with the age (p < 0.001), male gender (p = 0.001), agricultural activity (p = 0.036), and history of tick bite (p = 0.014). In multivariate analysis, older age (OR: 1.03, CI:1.01–1.05, p < 0.001), male gender were found to be the risk factors (OR: 2.5, CI:1.15–5.63, p = 0.020) for CCHFV infection.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>This is the first human case with AP92 like CCHFV infection. Furthermore, this is the first report of AP92 like strain in Turkey. In the region, elderly males carry the highest risk for CCHFV infection.</p

KARAGOZLU, Nural, Bulent ERGONUL and Cem KARAGOZLU, 2008. Microbiological attributes of instant tarhana during fermentation and drying. Bulg. J. Agric. Sci., 14: 353-541 In this research, changes in chemical and microbiological attributes of traditional tarhana dough were investigated during an eight-day manufacturing period including fermentation and drying processes. Initial water content and pH value of tarhana dough were 47.97±1.76% and 4.97±0.08 respectively before fermentation process. At the end of the manufacturing process water content and pH value of instant tarhana were 5.8±0.66% and 4.19±0.04 (P<0.05). Total mesophylic aerobic bacteria, coliform bacteria, E.coli, mould, yeast and lactic acid bacteria counts of tarhana dough were 5.55±0.45 log cfu/g, <3 cfu/g, <3 cfu/g, <1 log cfu/g, 3.66±0.27 log cfu/g and 3.44±0.28 log cfu/g respectively, whereas these values were 5.38±0.23 log cfu/g, <3 cfu/g, <3 cfu/g, <1 log cfu/g, 5.38±0.3 log cfu/ and 4.75±0.12 log cfu/g at the end of the manufacturing process

Surface Expression of Epithelial Na Channel Protein in Rat Kidney

Expression of epithelial Na channel (ENaC) protein in the apical membrane of rat kidney tubules was assessed by biotinylation of the extracellular surfaces of renal cells and by membrane fractionation. Rat kidneys were perfused in situ with solutions containing NHS-biotin, a cell-impermeant biotin derivative that attaches covalently to free amino groups on lysines. Membranes were solubilized and labeled proteins were isolated using neutravidin beads, and surface β and γENaC subunits were assayed by immunoblot. Surface αENaC was assessed by membrane fractionation. Most of the γENaC at the surface was smaller in molecular mass than the full-length subunit, consistent with cleavage of this subunit in the extracellular moiety close to the first transmembrane domains. Insensitivity of the channels to trypsin, measured in principal cells of the cortical collecting duct by whole-cell patch-clamp recording, corroborated this finding. ENaC subunits could be detected at the surface under all physiological conditions. However increasing the levels of aldosterone in the animals by feeding a low-Na diet or infusing them directly with hormone via osmotic minipumps for 1 wk before surface labeling increased the expression of the subunits at the surface by two- to fivefold. Salt repletion of Na-deprived animals for 5 h decreased surface expression. Changes in the surface density of ENaC subunits contribute significantly to the regulation of Na transport in renal cells by mineralocorticoid hormone, but do not fully account for increased channel activity

Imported Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever cases in Istanbul

We described a series of imported cases of Crimean-Congo Hemorrhagic Fever (CCHF) in Istanbul and investigated the genetic diversity of the virus. All the suspected cases of CCHF, who were applied to the health centers in Istanbul, were screened for CCHF virus (CCHFv) infection by using semi-nested Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) following RT-PCR. Simultaneous blood samples were also sent to the national reference laboratory in Ankara for serologic investigation. In 10 out of 91 patients, CCHFv was detected by PCR, and among 9 out of 10, anti-CCHFv IgM antibodies were also positive. Clinical features were characterized by fever, myalgia, and hemorrhage. The levels of liver enzymes, creatinine phosphokinase, and lactate dehydrogenase were elevated, and bleeding markers were prolonged. All the cases were treated with ribavirin. There was no fatal case. All the strains clustered within the same group as other Europe/Turkey isolates
