    Histopathological distribution of thyroid cancers: A retrospective analysis of 570 patients

    Aim: Thyroid cancers are the most commonly encountered endocrine system malignancies.  The incidence continues to rise worldwide. Our aim in this study is to investigate the frequency and histopathological subtypes of thyroid cancer in our clinic. Methods: The present study was conducted with 3614 patients who were followed up in our endocrinology and general surgery clinic and operated with the diagnosis of multinodular and/or nodular goiter between 2015 and 2021. The histopathological types and information of patients diagnosed with thyroid cancer were obtained retrospectively from the pathology reports. Among the patients included in the study, a total of 570 people who were reported to have thyroid cancer due to histopathology were included in the study. Results: The data of a total of 3614 biopsy reports were examined for the study. Among these patients, 570 (421 females, 149 males) were operated and whose pathology reports were accessed were included in the study. The mean age of the patients was 49.12±10.4 years. As a result of the operations, malign postoperative tissue histopathology was 98.9% (n=564), and uncertain malignancy potential was reported to be 1.0% (n=6). In our study, the histopathological distribution of thyroid cancers was as follows; thyroid papillary cancer 89.4% (n=510), follicular cancer 7.3% (n=42), medullary cancer 2.1% (n=12), and malignancy potential uncertain 1.0% (n=6). Conclusion: The results of our study suggest that thyroid cancers are more common in women in our country, in parallel with the similar rates reported in the literature, with the increase worldwide

    A Greening Dragon in the Desert? China’s Role in the Geopolitical Ecology of Decarbonisation in the Eastern Mediterranean

    The new geopolitics of energy in the Eastern Mediterranean is not determined by hydrocarbons anymore. A significant expansion of renewables is underway. Driven by a surge in ‘Green Finance’ and decarbonization policies, this development changes conventional relationships of dependency. This takes place in an environment, where Asian and Western energy security strategies rapidly evolve in the wake of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. North Africa and the Eastern Mediterranean play a central role in this repositioning. China, far from merely being a dinosaur, is the largest producer of renewable energy. It also invests in infrastructure abroad, including Egypt. The largest Arab nation not only seeks to become a global energy hub, but also a decarbonization champion, as reflected in the hosting of COP27 in Sharm El Sheikh. This article will look at these developments, including its internal and external contradictions to understand the motivation behind China’s commitment to Egyptian solar expansion. It will demonstrate that, while part of a global political economy of decarbonization, China’s main motivation for investing in renewables in the Eastern Mediterranean remains geostrategic, tied to its Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).     RGDS-functionalized polyethylene glycol hydrogel-coated magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles enhance specific intracellular uptake by HeLa cells

    The objective of this study was to develop thin, biocompatible, and biofunctional hydrogel-coated small-sized nanoparticles that exhibit favorable stability, viability, and specific cellular uptake. This article reports the coating of magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (MIONPs) with covalently cross-linked biofunctional polyethylene glycol (PEG) hydrogel. Silanized MIONPs were derivatized with eosin Y, and the covalently cross-linked biofunctional PEG hydrogel coating was achieved via surface-initiated photopolymerization of PEG diacrylate in aqueous solution. The thickness of the PEG hydrogel coating, between 23 and 126 nm, was tuned with laser exposure time. PEG hydrogel-coated MIONPs were further functionalized with the fibronectin-derived arginine-glycine-aspartic acid-serine (RGDS) sequence, in order to achieve a biofunctional PEG hydrogel layer around the nanoparticles. RGDS-bound PEG hydrogel-coated MIONPs showed a 17-fold higher uptake by the human cervical cancer HeLa cell line than that of amine-coated MIONPs. This novel method allows for the coating of MIONPs with nano-thin biofunctional hydrogel layers that may prevent undesirable cell and protein adhesion and may allow for cellular uptake in target tissues in a specific manner. These findings indicate that the further biofunctional PEG hydrogel coating of MIONPs is a promising platform for enhanced specific cell targeting in biomedical imaging and cancer therapy

    Serum Copeptin Levels in Adult Patients with a Migraine Attack: A Cross-Sectional Study

    Aim:This study investigated the potential role of serum copeptin, a mediator of acute pain via sympathetic stress stimulation, as a biomarker of varying degrees of migraine-related disability. Specifically, we aimed to analyze whether the serum copeptin level can be used to differentiate migraine types (e.g., with and without aura).Methods:The study population included 80 consecutively consenting adult patients who had migraine attacks and attended the emergency department from June 2020 through November 2020, as well as 80 age- and sex-matched healthy controls. Using the Migraine Disability Assessment Scale (MIDAS), the same medical professional assessed each patient’s level of headache-related disability. Based on their MIDAS scores, the patients were separated into four groups: no disability (score 0-5; group MIDAS-I); mild disability (score 6-10; group MIDAS-II); moderate impairment (score 11-20; group MIDAS-III); and severe disability (score >20; group MIDAS-IV). There were also two categories of migraineurs: those with auras and those without auras. Upon admission, comparisons were made between the groups’ serum copeptin values.Results:In comparison to the control group, the patient group’s serum copeptin levels were noticeably higher (2113.30±206.20 vs. 1383.40±488.40; p<0.001). The study of the receiving operator’s characteristics showed that the cut-off copeptin level was 1898.5 pg/mL, with 90% sensitivity and 82.4% specificity for distinguishing patients from controls. There were no noticeable differences in the mean serum copeptin levels between the patient groups when compared by MIDAS score. Additionally, patients with and without aura did not differ notably in terms of mean serum copeptin levels. (2118.70±211.60 vs. 2071.10±160.40).Conclusion:Serum copeptin levels may be used as a diagnostic aid to help anticipate migraine-related headache attacks when combined with clinical signs and symptoms

    A Very Rare Presentation of Multiple Myeloma: Unilateral Raccoon Eye

    Multiple myeloma (MM), the second most common hematological malignancy, is caused by the accumulation of monoclonal plasma cells in bone marrow. It accounts for 10ñ€“15% of deaths from hematological malignancies and approximately 2% of deaths from cancer. The median age at presentation is 70 years old. The diagnosis is incidental in 30% of cases. MM is often discovered through routine blood screening with a large gap between the total protein and the albumin levels.Two thirds of patients complain of bone pain, especially lower back pain. MM could be diagnosed after a pathologic fracture occurs in one third of patients. Presentation with symptoms related to hyperviscosity, hypercalcemia and bleeding tendency could also be observed. A rare presentation of MM is peri-orbital ecchymotic lesion (raccoon eye). Here, we report a 64 years old, male patient presented with unilateral raccoon eye and high erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) to internal medicine outpatient. The patient was referred to hematology outpatient and was diagnosed with multiple myeloma
