    Fixed Drug Eruption due to Ornidazole

    Abstract Ornidazole is a nitroimidazole derivative with, anti-trichomoniasis and anti-parasitic properties. Fixed drug eruption (FDE) is a common cutaneous reaction by various drugs. FDE induced by ornidazole has been reported as 4 rd case in English literature. We describe a 40-year-old male patient with ornidazole associated FDE shortly after starting ornidazole therapy for gastroenteritis. Ornidazole therapy was stopped and the patient was treated with topical corticosteroids and systemic antihistamines. The eruption resolved within five days. The rash returned following ornidazole rechallenge. We propose that FDE is a side-effect of ornidazole

    The Effects of Vitamin D Receptor Silencing on the Expression of LVSCC-A1C and LVSCC-A1D and the Release of NGF in Cortical Neurons

    Recent studies have suggested that vitamin D can act on cells in the nervous system. Associations between polymorphisms in the vitamin D receptor (VDR), age-dependent cognitive decline, and insufficient serum 25 hydroxyvitamin D(3) levels in Alzheimer's patients and elderly people with cognitive decline have been reported. We have previously shown that amyloid β (Aβ) treatment eliminates VDR protein in cortical neurons. These results suggest a potential role for vitamin D and vitamin D-mediated mechanisms in Alzheimer's disease (AD) and neurodegeneration. Vitamin D has been shown to down-regulate the L-type voltage-sensitive calcium channels, LVSCC-A1C and LVSCC-A1D, and up-regulate nerve growth factor (NGF). However, expression of these proteins when VDR is repressed is unknown. The aim of this study is to investigate LVSCC-A1C, LVSCC-A1D expression levels and NGF release in VDR-silenced primary cortical neurons prepared from Sprague-Dawley rat embryos.qRT-PCR and western blots were performed to determine VDR, LVSCC-A1C and -A1D expression levels. NGF and cytotoxicity levels were determined by ELISA. Apoptosis was determined by TUNEL. Our findings illustrate that LVSCC-A1C mRNA and protein levels increased rapidly in cortical neurons when VDR is down-regulated, whereas, LVSCC-A1D mRNA and protein levels did not change and NGF release decreased in response to VDR down-regulation. Although vitamin D regulates LVSCC-A1C through VDR, it may not regulate LVSCC-A1D through VDR.Our results indicate that suppression of VDR disrupts LVSCC-A1C and NGF production. In addition, when VDR is suppressed, neurons could be vulnerable to aging and neurodegeneration, and when combined with Aβ toxicity, it is possible to explain some of the events that occur during neurodegeneration

    Erdinç, Ozan (Arel Author)As the smart grid solutions enable active consumer participation, demand response (DR) strategies have drawn much interest in the literature recently, especially for residential areas. As a new type of consumer load in the electric power system, electric vehicles (EVs) also provide different opportunities, including the capability of utilizing EVs as a storage unit via vehicle-to-home (V2H) and vehicle-to-grid (V2G) options instead of peak power procurement from the grid. In this paper, as the main contribution to the literature, a collaborative evaluation of dynamic-pricing and peak power limiting-based DR strategies with a bi-directional utilization possibility for EV and energy storage system (ESS) is realized. A mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) framework-based modeling of a home energy management (HEM) structure is provided for this purpose. A distributed small-scale renewable energy generation system, the V2H and V2G capabilities of an EV together with two-way energy trading of ESS, and different DR strategies are all combined in a single HEM system for the first time in the literature. The impacts of different EV owner consumer preferences together with the availability of ESS and two-way energy trading capabilities on the reduction of total electricity prices are examined with case studies

    Economic burden of severe asthma in Turkey: a cost of illness study from payer perspective

    Objective. To estimate economic burden of severe asthma in Turkey from payer perspective based on expert panel opinion on practice patterns in clinical practice. Methods. This cost of illness study was based on identification of per patient annual direct medical costs for the management of severe asthma in Take, from payer perspective. Average per patient direct medical cost was calculated based on cost items related to outpatient visits laboratory and radiological tests, hospitalizations and interventions drug treatment and equipment, and co-morbidities/complications. Results. Based on total annual per patient costs calculated for outpatient admission (177.91),laboratoryandradiologicaltests(177.91), laboratory and radiological tests ( 8232), hospitalization/interventions (1,154.55),drugtreatment/equipment(1,154.55), drug treatment/equipment (2,289.63) and co-morbidities (661.39)costitems,totalperpatientannualdirectmedicalcostrelatedtomanagementofsevereasthmawascalculatedtobe 661.39) cost items, total per patient annual direct medical cost related to management of severe asthma was calculated to be 4,369.76 from payer perspective. Drug treatment/equipment (524%) was the main cost driver in the management of severe asthma in Turkey, as followed by hospitalizations/interventions (264%) and co-morbidities (15.2%). Conclusions. In conclusion, our findings indicate that managing patients with severe asthma pose a considerable burden to health economics in Turkey with medications as the main cost driver
