    The Control Strategies of Brominated Organic Disinfection By-Products: Adsorption With Pre-chlorination and Photodegradation

    Increasing water pollution, scarcity, and seasonal events force water treatment plants to improve existing treatment techniques and/or implement new methods to enhance drinking water treatment and comply with disinfection by-product (DBP) regulations. A limited number of studies examine the pre-chlorination prior to activated carbon (AC) adsorption for the removal of DBP precursors, and there are no comprehensive and representative treatment conditions in current literature. Although many studies investigated photodegradation of individual DBPs by low pressure ultraviolet (UV254) light, there is still lack of information and limited understanding of photodegradation of total organic halogens and practical implications of UV254 under realistic water treatment conditions. The main objective of this dissertation was to comprehend the mechanistic and practical implications of (i) the effects of pre-chlorination on adsorption of DBP precursors, and (ii) the photodegradation and the reformation of DBPs by UV254 in realistic applications of these treatment approaches

    Medial/lateral epicondylitis is related to repetitive work activities which causes loss of labor. It sometimes becomes a chronic painful pathology. The main effect to protect the patients from such pathology should focus on avoiding repetitive patterns of work actually; however, it is not possible generally. Traditional treatment modalities such as physical therapies with the use of epicondylitis bands and intralesional steroid injections should be combined with newer modalities such as prolotherapy and prp injections in the treatment algorithm. In this chapter stages of the disease will be explained and those newer techniques and the mechanism of the healing would be detailed

    Spherical Vision Transformer for 360-degree Video Saliency Prediction

    The growing interest in omnidirectional videos (ODVs) that capture the full field-of-view (FOV) has gained 360-degree saliency prediction importance in computer vision. However, predicting where humans look in 360-degree scenes presents unique challenges, including spherical distortion, high resolution, and limited labelled data. We propose a novel vision-transformer-based model for omnidirectional videos named SalViT360 that leverages tangent image representations. We introduce a spherical geometry-aware spatiotemporal self-attention mechanism that is capable of effective omnidirectional video understanding. Furthermore, we present a consistency-based unsupervised regularization term for projection-based 360-degree dense-prediction models to reduce artefacts in the predictions that occur after inverse projection. Our approach is the first to employ tangent images for omnidirectional saliency prediction, and our experimental results on three ODV saliency datasets demonstrate its effectiveness compared to the state-of-the-art.Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures, accepted to BMVC 202

    Anterior Herniation of Partially Calcified and Degenerated Cervical Disc Causing Dysphagia

    We report a rare case of anterior cervical disc herniation associated with dysphagia. A 32-year-old man presented with complaints of dysphagia and concomitant pain in the right arm resistant to conservative therapy. On physical examination with respect to the muscle strength, the right shoulder abduction and flexion of the forearm were 3/5. Lateral X-ray revealed calcified osteophytes at the anterior C4-5 level. Magnetic resonance imaging showed soft disc herniation involving the right C6 root at the C5-6 level and anterior herniation of the C4-5 cervical disc. Anterior discectomies for C4-5 and C5-6 levels stabilized and ameliorated the dysphagia and pain. Cervical disc herniation usually presents with radicular findings. However, dysphagia may be an uncommon presentation. Anterior cervical disc herniation should be considered in a patient presenting with dysphagia

    Sensing Place and Presence in an INTIMAL Long-Distance Improvisation

    INTIMAL is an interactive system for relational listening, which integrates physical-virtual interfaces for people to sonically improvise between distant locations. The aim is to embrace two key aspects in the context of human migration: the sense of place and the sense of presence. This paper reflects on the use of INTIMAL in a long-distance improvisation between the cities of Oslo, Barcelona and London in May 2019. This improvisation was performed by nine Colombian migrant women, who had been involved in a research process using the Deep Listening® practice developed by Pauline Oliveros. Here we describe the performance setting and the implementation of the first two interfaces of the system: MEMENTO, an “embodied” navigator of an oral archive of Colombian women’s testimonies of conflict and migration; and RESPIRO, a sonification system that transmits and sonifies live, breathing signals between distant locations. We reflect on how the two interfaces facilitated and challenged the improvisers’ listening experiences and connections

    Designing Interactive Sonic Artefacts for Dance Performance: an Ecological Approach

    In this paper, we propose to consider the sonic interactions that occurs in a dance performance from an ecological perspective. In particular, we suggest using the conceptual models of artefact ecology and design space. As a case study, we present a work developed during a two weeks artistic residency in collaboration between a sound designer, one choreographer, and two dancers. During the residency both an interactive sound artefact based on a motion capture system, and a dance performance were developed. We present the ecology of an interactive sound artefact developed for the dance performance, with the objective to analyse how the ecology of multiple actors relate themselves to the interactive artefact

    Give Me Everything: Analyzing leakage of information in the Android platform with respect to wireless communications and personally identifiable information

    Among the billions of smartphone users in the world, Android still holds more than 80% of the market share. The applications which the users install have a specific set of features that need access to some device functionalities and sensors that may hold sensitive information about the user. Therefore, Android releases have set permission standards to let the user know what information is being disclosed to the application. Along with other security and privacy improvements, significant changes to the permission scheme are introduced with the Android 6.0 version (API level 23). In this master thesis, the Android permission scheme is tested on two devices from different eras. The evolution of Android over the years is examined in terms of confidentiality. For each device, two applications are built; one focused on extracting every piece of information within the confidentiality scope with every permission declared and/or requested, and the other app focused on getting this type of information without user notification. The resulting analysis illustrates whether how and in what way the Android permission scheme declined or improved over time
