The role of the helicopter in transportation
A general overview is presented of the role that the helicopter plays in the current aviation scene with special emphasis on its use in the airport access function. Technological problems of present-day aircraft are discussed along with some plausible solutions. The economic and regulatory aspects of commercial helicopter operations are presented. Finally six commercial operations utilizing helicopters are reviewed and conditions that enhance the success of the helicopter in the airport access function are proposed
Liquid Crystal Polarimetry for Metastability Exchange Optical Pumping of 3He
We detail the design and operation of a compact, discharge light polarimeter
for metastability exchange optical pumping of 3He gas near 1 torr under a low
magnetic field. The nuclear polarization of 3He can be discerned from its
electron polarization, measured via the circular polarization of 668 nm
discharge light from an RF excitation. This apparatus measures the circular
polarization of this very dim discharge light using a nematic liquid crystal
wave retarder (LCR) and a high-gain, transimpedance amplified Si photodiode. We
outline corrections required in such a measurement, and discuss contributions
to its systematic error

On Epstein's trajectory model of non-relativistic quantum mechanics
In 1952 Bohm presented a theory about non-relativistic point-particles moving
along deterministic trajectories and showed how it reproduces the predictions
of standard quantum theory. This theory was actually presented before by de
Broglie in 1926, but Bohm's particular formulation of the theory inspired
Epstein to come up with a different trajectory model. The aim of this paper is
to examine the empirical predictions of this model. It is found that the
trajectories in this model are in general very different from those in the de
Broglie-Bohm theory. In certain cases they even seem bizarre and rather
unphysical. Nevertheless, it is argued that the model seems to reproduce the
predictions of standard quantum theory (just as the de Broglie-Bohm theory).Comment: 12 pages, no figures, LaTex; v2 minor improvement

Ferrite post in a rectangular wave guide
A thin circular ferrite post magnetized lengthwise is placed in a rectangular wave guide with its axis normal to the direction of propagation of the incident waves. The polarization is such that the electric vector is parallel to the post. The reflected and transmitted waves are calculated both with respect to their intensities and phases. The results are also applied to find the influence of a thin ferrite post upon the resonant frequency of a rectangular cavity
Lower bounds for several online variants of bin packing
We consider several previously studied online variants of bin packing and
prove new and improved lower bounds on the asymptotic competitive ratios for
them. For that, we use a method of fully adaptive constructions. In particular,
we improve the lower bound for the asymptotic competitive ratio of online
square packing significantly, raising it from roughly 1.68 to above 1.75.Comment: WAOA 201
