    Method Development and Validation of the Quantitation of 19 Antipsychotics Using Deuterated Internal Standards

    Antipsychotic drugs or neuroleptics are used primarily for psychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia, psychosis, and bipolar disorder. In forensic science antipsychotics are drugs of considerable interest because of their potential abuse, involvement in suicides, and they are frequently associated with sudden death investigations. Well-characterized and fully validated analytical data is necessary to generate reproducible and reliable results. As a result, data can be correctly interpreted and objectively demonstrate in its applicability for the intended use. This research has developed and validated a method that is selective, sensitive and accurate using liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry (LC–MS/MS) for the simultaneous determination of approximately 19 antipsychotics with deuterated internal standard in postmortem human blood. Compound optimization parameters for detecting a specific compound as well as a quantitative assay of the antipsychotic compounds were accomplished. Validation parameters such as determination of linearity, within and between day accuracy and precision, carryover evaluation, matrix effect and recovery, and peak purity and selectivity study were performed. These parameters yielded results for all of the compounds with only two (mesoridazine and thiothixene) requiring further study to improve their performance.     The evolution of electronic reference sources

    Purpose To provide a historical look at the development of web versions of reference materials and discuss what makes an easy-to-use and useful electronic handbook. Design/methodology/approach Electronic reference materials were limited to handbooks available on the web. Observations and assumptions about usability are tested with an information retrieval test for specific tasks in print and online editions of the same texts. Findings Recommended adoption of those elements which create a well designed book in combination with robust search capabilities and online presentation result in an easy-to-use and useful electronic reference source. Research limitations/implications The small sample size that was used for testing limits the ability to draw conclusions, and is used only as an indication of the differences between models. A more thorough look at difference between electronic book aggregates, such as ENGnetBASE, Knovel® and Referex would highlight the best features for electronic reference materials. Practical implications Advantages to particular models for electronic reference publishing are discussed, raising awareness for product evaluation. Areas of development for electronic reference book publishers or providers are identified. Work in these areas would help ensure maximum efficiency through cross title searching via metasearching and data manipulation.     Information use in design: what should we be teaching?

    Librarians are regularly working to understand how students make decisions around information use to inform the development of more relevant learning activities. The more relevant the activities when students are learning any new skill, the more likely they are to understand the task and incorporate the learning into future design decisions and writing. The need to build connections and understanding is critical in adoption of information literacy. In this study, the researcher analyzed the transcript from an end of semester focus group with students in a design class about their information use during the semester project.     NICMOS Observations of Interaction Triggered Star Formation in the Luminous Infrared Galaxy NGC 6090

    High resolution, 1.1, 1.6, and 2.2 micron imaging of the luminous infrared galaxy NGC 6090 obtained with NICMOS of the Hubble Space Telescope are presented. These new observations are centered on the two nuclei of the merger, and reveal the spiral structure of the eastern galaxy and the amorphous nature of the western galaxy. The nuclear separation of 3.2 kpc (H_0 = 75 km/s/Mpc) indicates that NGC 6090 is at an intermediate stage of merging. Bright knots/clusters are also visible in the region overlapping the merging galaxies; four of these knots appear bluer than the underlying galaxies and have colors consistent with young (<~ 10^7 yr) star clusters. The spatial coincidence of the knots with the molecular gas in NGC 6090 indicates that much of the present star formation is occuring outside of the nuclear region of merging galaxies, consistent with recent studies of other double nuclei luminous infrared galaxies.Comment: LaTex, 18 pages with 4 jpg figures, ApJ, in pres

    Lights, Camera, Activity! A Systematic Review of Research on Learner-Generated Videos

    Aim/Purpose The current literature discusses the use and benefits of learner-generated videos (LGVs). However, it rarely addresses any correlation between the types of subjects that are best suited for using these videos or what techniques should accompany the use of LGVs. Background This systematic review synthesizes current literature to identify patterns and implications that develop from the use of LGVs so that their future use can be both consistent and effective. This paper also reviews the studies to establish the most consistent educational benefits that emerge from this activity. Methodology Employing the Preferred-Reporting of Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) technique, this systematic review cumulated 39 eligible studies published between 2008 to 2020. A set of eligibility criteria guided us in the article selection process, such as the use of LGVs as an assignment, educational settings, publication time frame, and empirical studies. We conducted further steps by searching the articles in major databases, screening, analyzing, and synthesizing the articles. Contribution This study expands the literature regarding LGVs-related topics in both research and practical aspects. We have discovered research gaps, suggesting the directions of future studies. Additionally, we provide suggestions for practitioners interested in adopting LGVs. Findings Findings reveal that the use of LGVs may result in reduced cognitive load, increased creativity, increased cross-curricular competencies, learner independence, and the ability to apply knowledge in a meaningful way. Recommendations for Practitioners Most of the studies that we reviewed recommended strategies for implementing LGVs into a curriculum to optimize the benefits of LGVs.• Articulating the learning objectives and aligning the LGV activities with the learning objectives emerges as an important strategy.• Instructors may guide students to commence the LGV project early and stay organized with the tasks required to complete the project, as this type of guidance may help students overcome time-related challenges.• Providing several options for the students to create different designs or formats and select the type of media would promote their creativity. Recommendation for Researchers Other scholars may consider exploring group differences in their learning performance by employing an experimental study (e.g., providing specific production rules versus not), including investigating the impact on the learning achievement. Future Research Future studies may focus on investigating the impact on cognitive load when students produce LGVs with instructional guidance. Other important variables, such as self-confidence and self-efficacy, that may have played a role in the process of producing LGVs deserve further attention

    Automatic Detection of COVID-19 Based on Short-Duration Acoustic Smartphone Speech Analysis

    Currently, there is an increasing global need for COVID-19 screening to help reduce the rate of infection and at-risk patient workload at hospitals. Smartphone-based screening for COVID-19 along with other respiratory illnesses offers excellent potential due to its rapid-rollout remote platform, user convenience, symptom tracking, comparatively low cost, and prompt result processing timeframe. In particular, speech-based analysis embedded in smartphone app technology can measure physiological effects relevant to COVID-19 screening that are not yet digitally available at scale in the healthcare field. Using a selection of the Sonde Health COVID-19 2020 dataset, this study examines the speech of COVID-19-negative participants exhibiting mild and moderate COVID-19-like symptoms as well as that of COVID-19-positive participants with mild to moderate symptoms. Our study investigates the classification potential of acoustic features (e.g., glottal, prosodic, spectral) from short-duration speech segments (e.g., held vowel, pataka phrase, nasal phrase) for automatic COVID-19 classification using machine learning. Experimental results indicate that certain feature-task combinations can produce COVID-19 classification accuracy of up to 80% as compared with using the all-acoustic feature baseline (68%). Further, with brute-forced n-best feature selection and speech task fusion, automatic COVID-19 classification accuracy of upwards of 82–86% was achieved, depending on whether the COVID-19-negative participant had mild or moderate COVID-19-like symptom severity

    Undergraduate STEM students are increasingly expected to have some data use skills upon graduation, whether they pursue post-graduate education or move into industry. This project was an initial foray into the application of data information literacy competencies to training undergraduate students to identify markers of data and information quality. The data consumer training appeared within two courses to help students evaluate data objects, including databases and datasets available on the Internet. The application of the Data Credibility Checklist provides a foundation for developing data reuse competencies. Based upon the initial presentation of the content, it became obvious that students need very basic introductions to data concepts, including definitions for database and dataset, and the process of data object discovery
