    Near-field noise of a single-rotation propfan at an angle of attack

    The near field noise characteristics of a propfan operating at an angle of attack are examined utilizing the unsteady pressure field obtained from a 3-D Euler simulation of the propfan flowfield. The near field noise is calculated employing three different procedures: a direct computation method in which the noise field is extracted directly from the Euler solution, and two acoustic-analogy-based frequency domain methods which utilize the computed unsteady pressure distribution on the propfan blades as the source term. The inflow angles considered are -0.4, 1.6, and 4.6 degrees. The results of the direct computation method and one of the frequency domain methods show qualitative agreement with measurements. They show that an increase in the inflow angle is accompanied by an increase in the sound pressure level at the outboard wing boom locations and a decrease in the sound pressure level at the (inboard) fuselage locations. The trends in the computed azimuthal directivities of the noise field also conform to the measured and expected results

    Prediction of the Aero-Acoustic Performance of Open Rotors

    The rising cost of jet fuel has renewed interest in contrarotating open rotor propulsion systems. Contemporary design methods offer the potential to maintain the inherently high aerodynamic efficiency of open rotors while greatly reducing their noise output, something that was not feasible in the 1980's designs. The primary source mechanisms of open rotor noise generation are thought to be the front rotor wake and tip vortex interacting with the aft rotor. In this paper, advanced measurement techniques and high-fidelity prediction tools are used to gain insight into the relative importance of the contributions to the open rotor noise signature of the front rotor wake and rotor tip vortex. The measurements include three-dimensional particle image velocimetry of the intra-rotor flowfield and the acoustic field of a model-scale open rotor. The predictions provide the unsteady flowfield and the associated acoustic field. The results suggest that while the front rotor tip vortex can have a significant influence on the blade passing tone noise produced by the aft rotor, the front rotor wake plays the decisive role in the generation of the interaction noise produced as a result of the unsteady aerodynamic interaction of the two rotors. At operating conditions typical of takeoff and landing operations, the interaction noise level is easily on par with that generated by the individual rotors, and in some cases is even higher. This suggests that a comprehensive approach to reducing open rotor noise should include techniques for mitigating the wake of the front rotor as well as eliminating the interaction of the front rotor tip vortex with the aft rotor blade tip

    An Analytical Assessment of NASA's N+1 Subsonic Fixed Wing Project Noise Goal

    The Subsonic Fixed Wing Project of NASA's Fundamental Aeronautics Program has adopted a noise reduction goal for new, subsonic, single-aisle, civil aircraft expected to replace current 737 and A320 airplanes. These so-called 'N+1' aircraft - designated in NASA vernacular as such since they will follow the current, in-service, 'N' airplanes - are hoped to achieve certification noise goal levels of 32 cumulative EPNdB under current Stage 4 noise regulations. A notional, N+1, single-aisle, twinjet transport with ultrahigh bypass ratio turbofan engines is analyzed in this study using NASA software and methods. Several advanced noise-reduction technologies are analytically applied to the propulsion system and airframe. Certification noise levels are predicted and compared with the NASA goal

    An Assessment of Current Fan Noise Prediction Capability

    In this paper, the results of an extensive assessment exercise carried out to establish the current state of the art for predicting fan noise at NASA are presented. Representative codes in the empirical, analytical, and computational categories were exercised and assessed against a set of benchmark acoustic data obtained from wind tunnel tests of three model scale fans. The chosen codes were ANOPP, representing an empirical capability, RSI, representing an analytical capability, and LINFLUX, representing a computational aeroacoustics capability. The selected benchmark fans cover a wide range of fan pressure ratios and fan tip speeds, and are representative of modern turbofan engine designs. The assessment results indicate that the ANOPP code can predict fan noise spectrum to within 4 dB of the measurement uncertainty band on a third-octave basis for the low and moderate tip speed fans except at extreme aft emission angles. The RSI code can predict fan broadband noise spectrum to within 1.5 dB of experimental uncertainty band provided the rotor-only contribution is taken into account. The LINFLUX code can predict interaction tone power levels to within experimental uncertainties at low and moderate fan tip speeds, but could deviate by as much as 6.5 dB outside the experimental uncertainty band at the highest tip speeds in some case

    Tradeoffs in jet inlet design: a historical perspective

    The design of the inlet(s) is one of the most demanding tasks of the development process of any gas turbine-powered aircraft. This is mainly due to the multi-objective and multidisciplinary nature of the exercise. The solution is generally a compromise between a number of conflicting goals and these conflicts are the subject of the present paper. We look into how these design tradeoffs have been reflected in the actual inlet designs over the years and how the emphasis has shifted from one driver to another. We also review some of the relevant developments of the jet age in aerodynamics and design and manufacturing technology and we examine how they have influenced and informed inlet design decision

    A Process for Assessing NASA's Capability in Aircraft Noise Prediction Technology

    An acoustic assessment is being conducted by NASA that has been designed to assess the current state of the art in NASA s capability to predict aircraft related noise and to establish baselines for gauging future progress in the field. The process for determining NASA s current capabilities includes quantifying the differences between noise predictions and measurements of noise from experimental tests. The computed noise predictions are being obtained from semi-empirical, analytical, statistical, and numerical codes. In addition, errors and uncertainties are being identified and quantified both in the predictions and in the measured data to further enhance the credibility of the assessment. The content of this paper contains preliminary results, since the assessment project has not been fully completed, based on the contributions of many researchers and shows a select sample of the types of results obtained regarding the prediction of aircraft noise at both the system and component levels. The system level results are for engines and aircraft. The component level results are for fan broadband noise, for jet noise from a variety of nozzles, and for airframe noise from flaps and landing gear parts. There are also sample results for sound attenuation in lined ducts with flow and the behavior of acoustic lining in ducts

    Jet-cavity Interaction Tones

    A fundamental study of resonant tones produced by jet-cavity interaction over a wide range of flow conditions covering both subsonic and supersonic speeds is described. Two significant findings emerge. For the jet-cavity configurations investigated, a suitably defined reduced frequency parameter allows for a global classification of all jet-cavity tones into two main types. For the first type, the reduced frequency depends on the jet Mach number, whereas for the second type, the reduced frequency is independent of the jet Mach number. We propose simple correlations for the frequency of both types of tones. Based on earlier research, we had expected that the traditional classifications of cavity flows into the open, transitional, or closed variety would be insensitive to small changes in Mach number and would depend primarily on the cavity's LID ratio. However, use of the novel high-resolution photoluminescent pressure sensitive paint shows that these classifications are actually quite sensitive to the jet Mach number for jet-cavity interactions. However, these classifications provide no guidance for determining tone type, amplitude, or frequency
