    Assessment of the Effect of Service-Learning in Nanoscience on Student’s Depth of Learning and Critical Thinking Depth of learning and critical thinking skills in a new Nanoscale Science and Technology course which incorporates service-learning was investigated in a sample of 12 undergraduate students at the University of Central Florida. Students were given a Nanoscience pre- and post-test, as well as asked to write two drafts of a final critical reflection at the end of the course. The overall learning of students was assessed, and results clearly show improvement between both pre- and post-tests and the draft and final versions of the critical reflections. We associate this improvement at least in part with the service-learning experience

    Quantum tunneling of magnetization in trigonal single-molecule magnets

    We consider quantum tunneling of magnetization (QTM) in single-molecule magnets (SMMs) possessing idealized C-3 symmetry. We do so by mapping the spectrum of a Mn-3(III) SMM obtained via diagonalization of a multispin (three s = 2 spins) Hamiltonian onto that of a giant-spin model with spin S = 6. Rotation of the easy axes of the Mn-III atoms away from the C-3 axis leads to the emergence of the (O) over cap (3)(4) ( 1/2[(S) over cap (z), (S) over cap (3)(+) + (S) over cap (3)(-)]) operator in the giant-spin model. This unfreezes odd-k QTM resonances and generates threefold patterns of Berry-phase interference minima in all resonances, including k = 0, which shifts from zero longitudinal field

    How to distinguish between interacting and noninteracting molecules in tunnel junctions

    Recent experiments demonstrate a temperature control of the electric conduction through a ferrocene-based molecular junction. Here we examine the results in view of determining means to distinguish between transport through single-particle molecular levels or via transport channels split by Coulomb repulsion. Both transport mechanisms are similar in molecular junctions given the similarities between molecular intralevel energies and the charging energy. We propose an experimentally testable way to identify the main transport process. By applying a magnetic field to the molecule, we observe that an interacting theory predicts a shift of the conductance resonances of the molecule whereas in the noninteracting case each resonance is split into two peaks. The interaction model works well in explaining our experimental results obtained in a ferrocene-based single-molecule junction, where the charge degeneracy peaks shift (but do not split) under the action of an applied 7-Tesla magnetic field.     Electrostatic Control over Temperature-Dependent Tunneling across a Single Molecule Junction

    Understanding how the mechanism of charge transport through molecular tunnel junctions depends on temperature is crucial to control electronic function in molecular electronic devices. With just a few systems investigated as a function of bias and temperature so far, thermal effects in molecular tunnel junctions remain poorly understood. Here we report a detailed charge transport study of an individual redox-active ferrocene-based molecule over a wide range of temperatures and applied potentials. The results show the temperature dependence of the current to vary strongly as a function of the gate voltage. Specifically, the current across the molecule exponentially increases in the Coulomb blockade regime and decreases at the charge degeneracy points, while remaining temperature-independent at resonance. Our observations can be well accounted for by a formal single-level tunneling model where the temperature dependence relies on the thermal broadening of the Fermi distributions of the electrons in the leads.Comment: 37 pages, 13 figure

    Nanometric constrictions in superconducting coplanar waveguide resonators

    We report on the design, fabrication and characterization of superconducting coplanar waveguide resonators with nanoscopic constrictions. By reducing the size of the center line down to 50 nm, the radio frequency currents are concentrated and the magnetic field in its vicinity is increased. The device characteristics are only slightly modified by the constrictions, with changes in resonance frequency lower than 1% and internal quality factors of the same order of magnitude as the original ones. These devices could enable the achievement of higher couplings to small magnetic samples or even to single molecular spins and have applications in circuit quantum electrodynamics, quantum computing and electron paramagnetic resonance.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

    Incommensurate Transverse Anisotropy Induced by Disorder and Spin-Orbit-Vibron Coupling in Mn12-acetate

    It has been shown within density-functional theory that in Mn12_{12}-acetate there are effects due to disorder by solvent molecules and a coupling between vibrational and electronic degrees of freedom. We calculate the in-plane principal axes of the second-order anisotropy caused by the second effect and compare them with those of the fourth-order anisotropy due to the first effect. We find that the two types of the principal axes are not commensurate with each other, which results in a complete quenching of the tunnel-splitting oscillation as a function of an applied transverse field.Comment: Will be presented at MMM conference 200

    Evolução à miocardiopatia dos infectados chagásicos crônicos tratados (nifurtimox ou benzonidazol) e não tratados

    The aim of this work was to compare the evolution of chronic chagasic untreated patients (UTPs) with that of benznidazole or nifurtimox-treated patients (TPs). A longitudinal study from a low endemic area (Santa Fe city, Argentina) was performed during an average period of 14 years. Serological and parasitological analyses with clinical exams, ECG and X-chest ray were carried out. At the onset, 19/198 infected patients showed chagasic cardiomyopathy (CrChM) while 179 were asymptomatic. In this latter group the frequency of CrChM during the follow-up was lower in TPs compared with UTPs (3.2% vs 7%). Within the CrChM group, 2/5 TPs showed aggravated myopathy whereas this happened in 9/14 UTPs. Comparing the clinical evolution of all patients, 5.9% of TPs and 13% of UTPs had unfavourable evolution, but the difference is not statistically relevant. Serological titers were assessed by IIF. Titers equal to or lower than 1/64 were obtained in 86% of the TPs, but only in 38% of UTPs. The differences were statistically significant (geometric mean: 49.36 vs. 98.2). Antiparasitic assessment of the drugs (xenodiagnosis) proved to be effective. The low sensitivity in chronic chagasic patients must be born in mind. Despite treated patients showed a better clinical evolution and lower antibody levels than untreated ones, it is necessary to carry on doing research in order to improve therapeutic guidelines, according to the risk/benefit equation and based on scientific and ethical principles.Para comparar a evolução dos infectados chagásicos crônicos não tratados (UTPs) e tratados (TPs) com nifurtimox ou benznidazol, fez-se um estudo longitudinal numa área de baixa endemicidade (cidade de Santa Fe, Argentina), com média de seguimento de 14 anos. Em cada controle foram feitas análises sorológicas e parasitológicas, exames clínicos, eletrocardiográficos e radiológicos. No inicio, 19/198 infectados apresentaram miocardiopatia chagásica crônica (MChCr), enquanto 179 eram assintomáticos. A frequência de MChCr no seguimento destes últimos foi 3,2% para os tratados e 7% para os não tratados. Dos pacientes com MChCr no início, 2/5 dos tratados e 9/14 dos não tratados agravaram sua miocardiopatia. Comparando a evolução clínica dos infectados, 5,9% dos tratados e 13% dos não tratados tiveram evolução desfavorável, mas esta diferença não é estatisticamente significativa. Na avaliação sorológica por IFI, 86% dos TPs e só 38% dos UTPs apresentaram títulos menores ou iguais a 1/64. As diferenças são estatisticamente significativas (média geométrica: 49,36 vs 98,2). Os xenodiagnósticos seriados realizados, demonstraram efetividade das drogas (considerar a baixa sensibilidade deste método na etapa crônica). Os pacientes tratados mostraram melhor evolução clínica e mais baixos níveis de anticorpos do que os não tratados. É preciso continuar as investigações para estabelecer pautas terapêuticas mais claras sobre a relação risco-benefício, sustentadas nos princípios científicos e éticos

    Tunable crossover between one- and three-dimensional magnetic dynamics in CoII single-chain magnets organized by halogen bonding

    Low-temperature magnetometry, ac susceptibility, and calorimetry have been employed to study Co-based single-chain magnets (SCMs) organized through halogen bonding. Magnetic hysteresis and maxima in the dc and ac susceptibilities, respectively, confirm the SCM behavior of the system. Several characteristic magnetic relaxation regimes are observed at different temperatures, which can be associated with both intra- and interchain exchange interactions. Remarkably, tweaking the rate at which an external magnetic field is swept along the axis of the chains enables a controlled transition between the one- and three-dimensional dynamics. Experiments on an isostructural Co-based SCM system crystallized with different halogens do not show three-dimensional dynamics, illustrating the importance of halogen bonding on the control of interchain interactions.A.A. and E.d.B. acknowledge support from the National Science Foundation (DMR No. 1503627).
