Komatiitic composition of the hornblendites from the Montnegre Massif (Coastal Calalan Range, NE Iberian Peninsula)
Olivine hornblendites represent the most remarkable petrological type from the Montnegre massif. Its ultramafic composition and its close association with a hornblende gabbro intrusion suggest, at first, a cumulative origin from a hydrated basaltic magma. However, major element composition, coincident with komatiites and –very roughly– with the komatiitic trend, suggests the possibility of their origin by fractional crystallization processes from an ultramafic magma. The high MgO contents of hornblendites (up to 25 wt.%) would require an elevated partial melting degree of the mantle. Unlike komatiitic magma, hydrated ultramafic magma can be produced at significantly lower temperatures after H2O (or other volatile) influx, as suggested for the "Alaskan-type" intrusions. On the other hand, the obvious subalkaline affinity of olivine hornblendites and hornblende gabbros from the Montnegre massif (showing high amounts of normative hyperstene) compositionally distinguishs them from Cortlandt ultramafic complexes, of alkaline affinityLas hornblenditas olivínicas constituyen el tipo petrológico más destacable del Macizo del Montnegre.
The intrusive alkaline basic rocks from Northern Mallorca (Balearic Islands): geochemical features
The olivine diabases and teschenites that intruded into the Triassic sediments from the Serra de Tramuntana of Mallorca, belong, at least, to two different undersaturated alkaline series. The most undersaturated series evolves from K-rich basanitic magmas up to phonotephritic. These magmas are similar to those of some series found in continental rift environments. The less undersaturated series comes from less alkaline magmas and does not show differentiated terms. The trace element and REE composition suggest low degrees of melting of modified mantle peridotites, in equilibrium with garnet.
The modal composition of the plutonic rocks can be quantified but in the case of volcanic rocks this is not always possible, because of its aphanitic texture and presence of glass. These characteristics prevent a mineralogical classification in equivalent diagrams for both types of rocks. To resolve this problem, the IUGS recommends the use of chemical TAS diagram in cases where obtaining the modal composition is not possible, in an attempt to adjust its nomenclature to that represented in the QAPF modal diagram. A best approximation is obtained with the normative diagram Q'(F')-ANOR in which the anorthite and the orthoclase are used as a discriminating factor. In this work, the chemical SiO2 -100·CaO/(CaO+K2 O) diagram is presented, which largely reproduces the aforementioned normative classification but in a simplified form since it uses only three discriminating chemical components (SiO2 , CaO and K2 O). The delimitation and nomenclature of the fields has been undertaken empirically using as an example the normative diagram and plotting the analyses of typical igneous rocks. The approximate limit of silica saturation has been drawn as a straight line joining the feldspathic compositions, between orthoclase and anorthit
To obtain a classification of igneous rocks, compatible with the QAPF classification, in the absence of modal analyses, a chemical diagram using the same discriminating elements as the Q'(F')-ANOR normative diagram has been proposed. These elements, Si, Ca and K, are essential constituents of quartz, feldspars and feldspathoids. The different proportions between these minerals are the basis of the QAPF modal classification but also those of the normative classification Q'(F')-ANOR. The chemical diagram SiO2 100·CaO/(CaO+K2 O) uses these same elements but with the important difference that they are treated as independent variables. This characteristic allows igneous rocks to be classified with a nomenclature equivalent to that obtained by modal analyses, using only Si, Ca and K analytical data. The plotting of a set of representative plutonic and volcanic rocks reveals a remarkable concordance between both diagrams. However, some discrepancies and overlaps occur in the subsaturated fields due to the inability of the method to determine whether the lower silica content is due to the presence of olivine or feldspathoids.
Low-power petrography of igneous and metamorphic rocks using a transparency scanner
transparencias adaptado a negativos y diapositivas.
petrographic studies in igneous and metamorphic rocks, at low magnification,
without the use of the microscope. The image resolution obtained
is appropriate for the classification of the rocks and their textural description,
as well as for the structural studies between the macroscopic and microscopic
scale. The method is based on the capture of high resolution digital
images between 3200 and 4800 dpi from a conventional thin section that
is sandwiched between polarizing filters. The filters are hand made using polarizing
plastic sheet that is inserted into standard slide frames in order to be
used in a transparency scanner adapted to film and slides. Good images are
obtained up to 10x magnification (printed image) but are very acceptable up
to 35x magnification (250 dpi). The method does not replace the microscope
but allows previous petrographic studies of normal thin sections with the
simple aid of a personal computer and a desktop scanne
Apparent contradiction between cross-cut intrusive contacts of an ordovician-dated granite and the hercynian age of the enclosing schists. The Núria granite contact at the Jaça Roja (Eastern Pyrenees)
posteriorThe quartz-feldspathic massif that crops out in the upper Freser
River (Eastern Pyrenees) has been the object of numerous interpretations
that include from its consideration as a Precambrian
gneissic basement, a gneissified Ordovician intrusion during the
Hercynian Orogeny or even a hercynian granitic intrusion. Recent
U-Pb dating in zircons provides a clearly Ordovician age of
about 457 Ma for all protoliths of quarzo-feldspathic rocks, which
are generically considered as ortogneises. However, the finding of
obvious intrusive contacts that cut the Hercynian structures and
form centimetric to metric apophyses into the hornfelsed schists
seems to contradict this age. In the new intrusive contact of the
Jaça Roja that is described, the granite presents a very insignificant
deformation and cuts the foliation of the schists at different angles,
originating xenoliths. The observation of this outcrop poses a contradiction:
if the dating is correct, the foliation of the schists should
be Ordovician or earlier. If the schists are Hercynian, the intrusion
should be late-hercinian or even late
The dioritic-gabbroic intrusive complex of Susqueda (Montseny–Guilleries massif, Catalonia): lithological units and petrographic features
The intrusive complex of Susqueda constitutes the biggest association of plutonic mafic rocks of the Catalonian Coastal Ranges. It is located in the contact between the large calc-alkaline granitoid intrusions and the Paleozoic country rocks affected by Hercynian regional metamorphism.
Intrusive relationships denote contemporaneity of basic magmas and, at least, an acid magma intrusion. A significant part of the outcrop consists of a heterogeneous mixing zone between the two magmas (mingling). The intrusion is made up of two oval-shaped outcrops about 3 km long, elongated in the N–S direction and separated by a NW–SE fault. In these units, the compositions of the plutonic rocks range from quartz diorites and tonalites (in the mixing zones) up to olivine hornblendites. Even though its distribution is quite heterogeneous, a preliminary cartography was made including the different petrographic types in three main groups: 1) hornblende gabbros and olivine hornblendites; 2) biotite-hornblende diorites; and 3) heterogeneous mixing zone between hornblende-biotite quartz diorite, granodiorite, and tonalite. The predominant mineral composition consists of plagioclase and amphibole, typical of dioritic rocks. Nevertheless, in a great part of the outcrop the plagioclase widely exceeds the 50% in An, typical of gabbroic rocksEl complejo intrusivo de Susqueda constituye la mayor asociación plutónica de rocas máficas del batolito de las Cordilleras Costeras Catalanas.
Normative classification of silica-saturated and oversaturated plutonic rocks based on the QAP modal diagram: the 2Q- (or+ab)- 4an diagram
The modal QAP diagram constitutes the main tool for the classification
of the acidic and intermediate plutonic rocks. However, it has some limitations and inconsistencies that produce distinct rock overlaps and sudden
jumps in gradual compositional variations. The normative 2Q-(or+ab)-4an
diagram gives similar results than the modal QAP in many cases and
improves some others. For example, the overlapping between dioritoids
and gabbroids is avoided as well as the jump of the feldspathic index from
100% to 0% when the plagioclase crosses the 5% of anorthite content.
In addition, this diagram gives way to new compositional fields that allow
one to include some rocks as the eucritoids, or new rock-names, such as
"tonalgabbros" and "tonaleucrites" for quartz-rich, calcic to very calcic,
rocks. At the vertex of the alkaline feldspar the orthoclase is added to the
total albite, which gives a coherent behavior to the alkaline elements,
unlike the QAP diagram in which the albite of the plagioclase has an opposite behavior. Because of this grouping, the approximation to the vertex
of the alkaline feldspar is due to the increase of Na, as well as of K or
both. As a consequence, the sodic series also move progressively from the
vertex of the anortite to the vertex or + ab avoiding the extreme polarization that occurs in the QAP diagramEl diagrama modal QAP constituye la herramienta principal para la
A normative classification of plutonic and volcanic rocks using the 2Q- (or+ab)- 4an-2F diagram
Modal analyses provide a precise classification of the plutonic
rocks, as demonstrated by the great acceptance of the QAPF diagram.
However, the existence of isomorphic series in feldspars causes some
indeterminations and discontinuities in the fields of classification. Consequently, distinct rocks overlap at the same point, as is the case of the
gabbro and the diorite. In volcanic rocks, the accuracy of the determination decreases strongly and its classificationcan become a simple
approximation, or even become impossible in the hyaline rocks. Another
logical drawback that derives from the different resolution is that some
classification fields are different in plutonic and volcanic rocks, so there
is no nomenclature equivalence for the same compositions. The normative diagram 2Q-(or+ab)-4an-2F proposed in this work allows to
discriminate clearly between rocks with plagioclases of different compositions as well as to compare plutonic and volcanic rocks using the
same parameters, independently of whether they are phaneritic or
aphanitic rocks. As a result, two diagrams are obtained whose classification fields correspond exactly to the plutonic and volcanic rocks. Since
the number of fields obtained is greater than those of the QAPF diagram, several new rock names are proposed, some of which may have
an unlikely existence in natur
