    Geodesic domes for planetary exploration

    Venus and the Ocean Worlds are emerging areas of interest for space exploration, as they can potentially host, or have hosted, conditions compatible with life. Landers and probes for in-situ exploration, however, must deal with very high external pressure, due to the environmental conditions, often resulting in thick and heavy structures. Robust, reinforced shell structures can provide a lightweight solution for the primary structure. In this frame, the isogrid layout is already a standard in aerospace, especially for flat panels or cylindrical shells. In this paper, isogrid-stiffened hemispherical shells, or "geodesic domes", are described, focusing on the case of a concept of a Venus lander. Early design methods for both plain and geodesic domes subjected to external pressure are presented, providing design equations. Additive Manufacturing is identified as the key technology for fabricating metallic geodesic domes, due to the complexity of the internal features.Moreover, it allows to fabricate ports and integrated thermostructural systems in the same process, potentially resulting in improved performance or cost and schedule savings

    Numerical modeling and testing of mechanical behavior of AM Titanium alloy bracket for aerospace applications

    A key issue in designing a new product made through the Additive Manufacturing (AM) is the prediction of mechanical properties of material. Several experimental results show that AM-based products are often affected by widespread porosity, low density regions within their volume and anisotropy. Those effects are due to the manufacturing process, despite of efforts spent to improve the process parameters. This paper presents the numerical modelling of a geometrically complex structural bracket for aerospace application, which was re-designed through a topological optimization and produced in Ti-6Al-4V by means of the AM. The design activity herein described required to resort to a suitable model of constitutive properties of material by facing the problem of a large number of porosity/low density areas, as detected by a tomographic analysis of the mechanical component. According to some references an equivalent isotropic and homogeneous model of material was applied. Nevertheless the limitations of that approach were investigated through a validation of the numerical model and a testing activity. It was demonstrated that the Finite Element model based upon the assumptions of homogeneous and isotropic material might be effective in predicting the material and component strength, at least in static design, but even in case of design against fatigue, provided that a suitable experimental characterization of material was performed. The procedure of optimization was then assessed and compared to some preliminary tests performed on the real component, thus providing a preliminary good practice to the industrial partner involved in this research activity

    Design of Isogrid Shells for Venus Surface Probes

    The harsh environment of Venus poses a significant challenge for the design of lightweight surface probes. The authors investigated isogrid-stiffened spherical shells produced by additive manufacturing. A Ti-6Al-4V, 1.12-m-diam lightweight structural shell capable of surviving a Venus surface environment was designed and assessed via analytical methods and finite element modeling. Subscale components (200 mm diameter) were designed, analyzed, and fabricated using laser powder bed fusion and tested under hydrostatic external pressure at ambient temperatures for model validation. A subscale sphere was successfully tested under Venuslike pressures and temperatures at a hot isostatic press facility. It was found that additively manufactured isogrid shells could lead to significant mass, cost, and schedule savings, freeing resources for increased science return from future missions

    Does social cognition change? Evidence after 4 years from the Italian Network for Research on Psychoses

    Background Deficits in social cognition (SC) are significantly related to community functioning in schizophrenia (SZ). Few studies investigated longitudinal changes in SC and its impact on recovery. In the present study, we aimed: (a) to estimate the magnitude and clinical significance of SC change in outpatients with stable SZ who were assessed at baseline and after 4 years, (b) to identify predictors of reliable and clinically significant change (RCSC), and (c) to determine whether changes in SC over 4 years predicted patient recovery at follow-up. Methods The reliable change index was used to estimate the proportion of true change in SC, not attributable to measurement error. Stepwise multiple logistic regression models were used to identify the predictors of RCSC in a SC domain (The Awareness of Social Inference Test [TASIT]) and the effect of change in TASIT on recovery at follow-up. Results In 548 participants, statistically significant improvements were found for the simple and paradoxical sarcasm of TASIT scale, and for the total score of section 2. The reliable change index was 9.8. A cut-off of 45 identified patients showing clinically significant change. Reliable change was achieved by 12.6% and RCSC by 8% of participants. Lower baseline TASIT sect. 2 score predicted reliable improvement on TASIT sect. 2. Improvement in TASIT sect. 2 scores predicted functional recovery, with a 10-point change predicting 40% increase in the probability of recovery. Conclusions The RCSC index provides a conservative way to assess the improvement in the ability to grasp sarcasm in SZ, and is associated with recovery

    Insight in cognitive impairment assessed with the Cognitive Assessment Interview in a large sample of patients with schizophrenia

    The Cognitive Assessment Interview (CAI) is an interview-based scale measuring cognitive impairment and its impact on functioning in subjects with schizophrenia (SCZ). The present study aimed at assessing, in a large sample of SCZ (n = 601), the agreement between patients and their informants on CAI ratings, to explore patients' insight in their cognitive deficits and its relationships with clinical and functional indices. Agreement between patient- and informant-based ratings was assessed by the Gwet's agreement coefficient. Predictors of insight in cognitive deficits were explored by stepwise multiple regression analyses. Patients reported lower severity of cognitive impairment vs. informants. A substantial to almost perfect agreement was observed between patients' and informants' ratings. Lower insight in cognitive deficits was associated to greater severity of neurocognitive impairment and positive symptoms, lower severity of depressive symptoms, and older age. Worse real-life functioning was associated to lower insight in cognitive deficit, worse neurocognitive performance, and worse functional capacity. Our findings indicate that the CAI is a valid co-primary measure with the interview to patients providing a reliable assessment of their cognitive deficits. In the absence of informants with good knowledge of the subject, the interview to the patient may represent a valid alternative

    The interplay among psychopathology, personal resources, context-related factors and real-life functioning in schizophrenia: stability in relationships after 4 years and differences in network structure between recovered and non-recovered patients

    Improving real-life functioning is the main goal of the most advanced integrated treatment programs in people with schizophrenia. The Italian Network for Research on Psychoses previously explored, by using network analysis, the interplay among illness-related variables, personal resources, context-related factors and real-life functioning in a large sample of patients with schizophrenia. The same research network has now completed a 4-year follow-up of the original sample. In the present study, we used network analysis to test whether the pattern of relationships among all variables investigated at baseline was similar at follow-up. In addition, we compared the network structure of patients who were classified as recovered at follow-up versus those who did not recover. Six hundred eighteen subjects recruited at baseline could be assessed in the follow-up study. The network structure did not change significantly from baseline to follow-up, and the overall strength of the connections among variables increased slightly, but not significantly. Functional capacity and everyday life skills had a high betweenness and closeness in the network at follow-up, as they had at baseline, while psychopathological variables remained more peripheral. The network structure and connectivity of non-recovered patients were similar to those observed in the whole sample, but very different from those in recovered subjects, in which we found few connections only. These data strongly suggest that tightly coupled symptoms/dysfunctions tend to maintain each other's activation, contributing to poor outcome in schizophrenia. Early and integrated treatment plans, targeting variables with high centrality, might prevent the emergence of self-reinforcing networks of symptoms and dysfunctions in people with schizophrenia

    Global disparities in surgeons’ workloads, academic engagement and rest periods: the on-calL shIft fOr geNEral SurgeonS (LIONESS) study

    : The workload of general surgeons is multifaceted, encompassing not only surgical procedures but also a myriad of other responsibilities. From April to May 2023, we conducted a CHERRIES-compliant internet-based survey analyzing clinical practice, academic engagement, and post-on-call rest. The questionnaire featured six sections with 35 questions. Statistical analysis used Chi-square tests, ANOVA, and logistic regression (SPSS® v. 28). The survey received a total of 1.046 responses (65.4%). Over 78.0% of responders came from Europe, 65.1% came from a general surgery unit; 92.8% of European and 87.5% of North American respondents were involved in research, compared to 71.7% in Africa. Europe led in publishing research studies (6.6 ± 8.6 yearly). Teaching involvement was high in North America (100%) and Africa (91.7%). Surgeons reported an average of 6.7 ± 4.9 on-call shifts per month, with European and North American surgeons experiencing 6.5 ± 4.9 and 7.8 ± 4.1 on-calls monthly, respectively. African surgeons had the highest on-call frequency (8.7 ± 6.1). Post-on-call, only 35.1% of respondents received a day off. Europeans were most likely (40%) to have a day off, while African surgeons were least likely (6.7%). On the adjusted multivariable analysis HDI (Human Development Index) (aOR 1.993) hospital capacity > 400 beds (aOR 2.423), working in a specialty surgery unit (aOR 2.087), and making the on-call in-house (aOR 5.446), significantly predicted the likelihood of having a day off after an on-call shift. Our study revealed critical insights into the disparities in workload, access to research, and professional opportunities for surgeons across different continents, underscored by the HDI

    Control of thermomechanical anisotropy in high speed microrotor with permanent magnet for energy conversion

    A microturbine for energy harvesting is analyzed, and a design approach is assessed. A magnetic dipole, applied to a microrotor to convert energy of either a fluid or a gas into mechanical power, exhibits anisotropy of thermomechanical properties. The rotor dynamics, stability, and unbalance response are predicted. The coupled effect of rotation and temperature is then investigated, to detect the actual influence of the thermomechanical anisotropy of magnet, to be controlled by the contact pressure applied through an outer layer of carbon fibers.
