    Statistical Physics of Self-Replication

    Self-replication is a capacity common to every species of living thing, and simple physical intuition dictates that such a process must invariably be fueled by the production of entropy. Here, we undertake to make this intuition rigorous and quantitative by deriving a lower bound for the amount of heat that is produced during a process of self-replication in a system coupled to a thermal bath. We find that the minimum value for the physically allowed rate of heat production is determined by the growth rate, internal entropy, and durability of the replicator, and we discuss the implications of this finding for bacterial cell division, as well as for the pre-biotic emergence of self-replicating nucleic acids.Comment: 4+ pages, 1 figur

    Reviewing research evidence and the case of participation in sport and physical recreation by black and minority ethnic communities

    The paper addresses the implications of using the process of systematic review in the many areas of leisure where there is a dearth of material that would be admitted into conventional Cochrane Reviews. This raises important questions about what constitutes legitimate knowledge, questions that are of critical import not just to leisure scholars, but to the formulation of policy. The search for certainty in an area that lacks conceptual consensus results in an epistemological imperialism that takes a geocentric form. While clearly, there is a need for good research design whatever the style of research, we contend that the wholesale rejection of insightful research is profligate and foolhardy. A mechanism has to be found to capitalise on good quality research of whatever form. In that search, we draw upon our experience of conducting a review of the material available on participation in sport and physical recreation by people from Black and minority ethnic groups. The paper concludes with a proposal for a more productive review process that makes better use of the full panoply of good quality research available. © 2012 © 2012 Taylor & Francis

    Comparative analysis of radiation dose and low contrast detail detectability using routine paediatric chest radiography protocols

    Objectives: To compare low contrast detail (LCD) detectability and radiation dose for routine paediatric chest X-ray (CXR) imaging protocols among various hospitals. Methods: CDRAD 2.0 phantom and medical grade polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) slabs were used to simulate the chest region of four different paediatric age groups. Radiographic acquisitions were undertaken on 17 X-ray machines located in eight hospitals using their existing CXR protocols. LCD detectability represented by image quality figure inverse (IQFinv) was measured physically using the CDRAD analyser software. Incident air kerma (IAK) measurements were obtained using a solid-state dosimeter. Results: The range of IQFinv, between and within the hospitals, was 1.40-4.44 and 1.52-2.18, respectively for neonates; 0.96-4.73 and 2.33-4.73 for a 1-year old; 0.87-1.81 and 0.98-1.46 for a 5-year old and 0.90-2.39 and 1.27-2.39 for a 10-year old. The range of IAK, between and within the hospitals, was 8.56-52.62 µGy and 21.79-52.62 µGy, respectively for neonates; 5.44-82.82 µGy and 36.78-82.82 µGy for a 1-year old; 10.97-59.22 µGy and 11.75-52.94 µGy for a 5-year old and 13.97-100.77 µGy and 35.72-100.77 µGy for a 10-year old. Conclusions: Results show considerable variation, between and within hospitals, in the LCD detectability and IAK. Further radiation dose optimisation for the four paediatric age groups, especially in hospitals /X-ray rooms with low LCD detectability and high IAK, are required.     Are HIV smartphone apps and online interventions fit for purpose?

    Sexual health is an under-explored area of Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), particularly sexually transmitted infections such as HIV. Due to the stigma associated with these infections, people are often motivated to seek information online. With the rise of smartphone and web apps, there is enormous potential for technology to provide easily accessible information and resources. However, using online information raises important concerns about the trustworthiness of these resources and whether they are fit for purpose. We conducted a review of smartphone and web apps to investigate the landscape of currently available online apps and whether they meet the diverse needs of people seeking information on HIV online. Our functionality review revealed that existing technology interventions have a one-size-fits-all approach and do not support the breadth and complexity of HIV-related support needs. We argue that technology-based interventions need to signpost their offering and provide tailored support for different stages of HIV, including prevention, testing, diagnosis and management

    Gonad dose in AP pelvis radiography : impact of anode heel orientation

    Purpose: For antero posterior (AP) pelvis radiographic examination, determine the impact of anode heel orientation on female / male gonad dose. Methods: High sensitivity thermo-luminescent dosimeters (TLDs) were used with an ATOM dosimetry phantom; the phantom was positioned for AP pelvis. TLDs were placed into the testes and ovaries. Radiation dose received by these organs was measured with the feet toward anode and feet toward the cathode. kVp, mAs and SID were manipulated to generate a range of exposures. A dose profile was also generated using Unfors Mult-O-Meter 401 along the long axis of the phantom. Results: A decrease in dose from the central ray toward the anode was noted, with a marked increase toward the cathode. A significant reduction in dose was received by the testes with feet towards the anode compared with feet towards cathode (P˂0.001). No difference was seen for ovarian dose (P˃0.05). kVp, mAs and SID all have an effect on male and female gonad dose. Conclusion: For male pelvis imaging, placing feet towards the anode can be used as a simple dose reduction method

The volunteers work in a mutual aid, self-production, self-consumption system whose main purpose is identifying and nurturing high-level performers. But the new HMG/Sport England strategies leading to London 2012 expects volunteers to make a major contribution to sustaining and extending participation. The study utilized six focus group sessions with a total of 36 officials and members of 36 clubs across the six counties of Eastern England to assess whether and to what extent government policy objectives can be delivered through the voluntary sector. The study focused on the perceptions and attitudes of club members about being expected to serve public policy and the current pressures they and their clubs face. The results lead the authors to question the appropriateness, sensitivity, and feasibility of current sport policy, particularly the emphasis on VSCs as policy implementers.Peer reviewe

    Abelian functions associated with a cyclic tetragonal curve of genus six

    We develop the theory of Abelian functions defined using a tetragonal curve of genus six, discussing in detail the cyclic curve y^4 = x^5 + λ[4]x^4 + λ[3]x^3 + λ[2]x^2 + λ[1]x + λ[0]. We construct Abelian functions using the multivariate sigma-function associated with the curve, generalizing the theory of theWeierstrass℘-function. We demonstrate that such functions can give a solution to the KP-equation, outlining how a general class of solutions could be generated using a wider class of curves. We also present the associated partial differential equations satisfied by the functions, the solution of the Jacobi inversion problem, a power series expansion for σ(u) and a new addition formula
