Objective:To evaluate the effects of nasal septal surgery and type of nasal packing used on local and systemic oxidative stress. Methods:Fifteen patients who were scheduled for septoplasty under local anaesthesia with isolated septal deviation were included in the study. Venous blood samples were collected preoperatively, postoperatively upon anterior nasal packaging, immediately after nasal packaging was removed and 2 hours following removal of nasal packaging. At the start of the incision and just after removal of the nasal packaging 2x2-mm sized nasal mucosal samples were taken. Malonylaldehyde (MDA) was measured as a parameter of local oxidative stress, and glutathione (GSH) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) as parameters of the local antioxidant system. Systemic MDA, catalase and nitric oxide were measured. Results:GSH and SOD levels decreased postoperatively in the septal mucosa just after nasal package removal, whereas MDA increased significantly (p<0.001). Systemic MDA levels decreased in comparison to preoperative levelsbetween the phases, however NO and catalase levels increased (p<0.05, p<0.01).Conclusion:Local oxidative stress occurs after septoplasy operation but no biochemical effect is observed systemically. Local oxidative stress is influenced by surgical intervention, surgical technique and packing material. New comparative studies are required between study groups with no nasal packaging

Pediculosis humanus capitis (head lice) is an important public health problem among school children. In our study, 20,612 schoolchildren (10,367 boys, 10,245 girls) were examined for Pediculus humanus capitis in 36 elementary schools between December 1996 and February 1998 in Ankara, Turkey. The prevalence of pediculosis capitis infestation was found to be 3.4% (701 / 20, 612). Of these, 382 students were treated with application of 1% permethrin cream rinse, and 184 students with 0.4% d-phenothrin shampoo. On day 14 of the controlled trial, the success rates were 93.7 % in the 1% permethrin cream rinse group and 75.5 % in the 0.4% d-phenothrin shampoo group. The 1% permethrin cream rinse was also significantly more active in pediculicidal efficacy when compared to the 0.4% d-phenothrin shampoo (p<0.001). As a result, these findings demonstrate that pediculosis capitis still remains a widespread health problem

Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the status of matrix metalloproteinases (MMP-2, MMP-7, MMP-9) and tissue inhibitor of matrix metalloproteinase-1 (TIMP-1) clue to dysregulated turnover of connective tissue matrices in children with recurrent tonsillitis (RT)

Blastocystis subtypes in irritable bowel syndrome and inflammatory bowel disease in Ankara, Turkey

Blastocystis infection has been reported to be associated with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and chronic diarrhoea. The availability of data on the subtypes of Blastocystis found in these patient groups would be of interest in understanding the significance of Blastocystis infection in chronic illness. In this study, we identify Blastocystis subtypes found in patients presenting with IBS, IBD, chronic diarrhoea and asymptomatic patients in Ankara, Turkey. Blastocystis was detected in 11 symptomatic patients by microscopy and 19 by stool culture. Stool culture was more sensitive than microscopy in identifying Blastocystis. Using standard nomenclature adopted in 2007, Blastocystis sp. subtype 3 was the most common in all groups, followed by Blastocystis sp. subtype 2. Identical subtypes of Blastocystis are found in patients with IBS, IBD and chronic diarrhoea. These particular subtypes show low host specificity and are carried by humans and some farm animals. The subtypes of Blastocystis that are commonly found in rodents and certain wild birds were not found in these patients. We suggest a model in which the severity of enteric protozoan infection may be mediated by host factors

The objective of this study was to assess the efficacy of maggot therapy and to develop decontained maggot designs for the best use and effect. In this study, we could maintenance of Lucilia sericata colony and sterile maggots in the insectariums. Contained maggot designs would be developed for the best use and effect for maggot therapy. We have enrolled 25 patients with non-healing chronic wounds (23 diabetic foot wounds, 2 ischemic foot wounds,) various wound size (mean 11,9±11,8 cm2 ). The clinical state of the wounds documented before and after maggot therapy. Gram-positive cocci and Gram-negative bacilli were the most frequently isolated from patients with chronic wounds in pretreatment. Along with packet that contains the sterile larvae of the second stage (average mean number of applications 3,6±1,6 packet; average mean 16,2±8,6 days) hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) was applied to patients. As a result of treatment of 19 patients (76%) provided a complete wound debridement, on the other hand, a partial debridement was occurred in six patients (24%). As a result, application of maggot therapy as a "package" in the treatment of patients with chronic wounds is practical and effective

Investigation of Copy Number Variation by arrayCGH in Turkish Children and Adolescents Diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorders

Aim: The development of whole-genome screening methodologies for the detection of copy number variations (CNVs), such as array-based comparative genomic hybridization (aCHG), provides a much higher resolution than karyotyping leading to the identification of novel microdeletion and microduptication syndromes often associated with an autism spectrum disease (ASD) phenotype. The aim of the study was to determine CNVs of patients with ASD by using array-based comparative genomic hybridization
