Changing incentives for early retirement - Causal evidence from a cohort based pension reform
In this paper we exploit a cohort specific pension reform to estimate the causal employment effect of changes in the financial incentives to retire. In particular we analyze the effect of the introduction of pension deductions for early retirement on female employment. For the empirical analysis we use high-quality administrative data from the German Federal Pension Insurance (VSKT) and find positive and significant effects of the reform on employment
Germany's small and medium-sized enterprises, known collectively as the Mittelstand, form the backbone of the German economy. Digitalization offers such companies a golden opportunity to optimize processes, develop new business models and open up new markets, so ensuring that they remain internationally competitive. Digital technologies are thus crucial to the ongoing development of Germany's economic and technological capabilities. Based on 46 studies conducted between 2013 to 2016, the present IW analysis examines the current level of digitalization in the Mittelstand. It summarizes what the studies have in common and where they differ and explains both the opportunities and potential and the obstacles and risks emanating from digitalization. From this meta-analysis the authors derive policy recommendations designed to boost digitalization in the Mittelstand and thus enhance Germany's long-term position as a competitive location for industrial investment
Data Portability and Online Platforms The Effects on Competition [Extended Abstract]
This paper examines the potential effects of data portability among online platforms on competition, providing policy recommendations for the preservation of innovative, undistorted competitive markets. Based on a platform-data model, it is illustrated how users, data and the products and services of a platform are related. Platform markets which entail an especially high risk of market power abuse are determined. It is concluded that the right to data portability as in the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation has to be interpreted in a nuanced fashion in order to avoid adverse effects on competition and innovation
Fiddling while the ice melts? How organizational scholars can take a more active role in the climate change debate
The debate over anthropogenic climate change or the idea that human activities are altering the physical climate of the planet continues to rage amid seemingly irreconcilable differences, both within the developed world and between developed and less developed countries. With high uncertainty, rival worldviews, and wide diversity of meaning attached to the expression, climate change has become a key narrative within which local and transnational issues – economic, social, and political – are framed and contested. The field is fraught with controversies regarding causes and consequences, as well as different attitudes toward risks, technologies, and economic and social well-being for different groups. Parties also dispute how to share responsibility for reducing emissions – whether the issue primarily needs market, regulatory, technological, or behavioral solutions. Climate change is many things to many people. Competing interests negotiate over its interpretation and utilize various strategies to promote practices that advance their own understandings regarding climate change and its governance
Place-based Teaching amidst a Global Pandemic?
[EN] How did the COVID-induced switch to online learning impact attitudes and practices toward place-based teaching? To explore this question, a pair of surveys was administered to students and faculty in the University of Hawai‘i’s School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology in Fall 2018 (142 respondents) and Fall 2021 (83 respondents). Survey results indicate that PBT practices are highly valued by students and faculty, even (or perhaps especially) when courses are in online formats. Faculty report wanting to use more place-based teaching practices in online courses, but there are obvious challenges. The paper ends with concrete examples of how place-based teaching can be effectively implemented in online courses. The U.S. National Science Foundation (Award # 2022937) provided support for this study.
We would like to thank Mari MacNeill for assistance with administering the 2021 survey,
and SOEST faculty and students for completing the survey. We are also grateful to two
